A review of cervical cancer and cervical screening: implications for nursing practice.

In this paper we review epidemiological and other research evidence on cervical cancer and cervical screening. We outline recent research evidence implicating sexually transmitted human papillomavirus as one of the causes of cervical cancer, but stress the uncertainty surrounding the causes and natural history of the disease. We go on to discuss evidence on risk factors associated with increased incidence of and mortality from cervical cancer, including age, sexual behaviour, smoking, socioeconomic status and prolonged use of oral contraceptives. Cervical screening has reduced mortality in som

The relevance of the Women's Health Initiative results on combined hormone replacement therapy in clinical practice.

The results of the Women's Health Initiative's (WHI) large prospective randomized controlled study on the benefits and risks of combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have been reported earlier than expected, due to the findings of a small excess in cases of breast cancer, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident, and venous thrombosis, in conjunction with a slight diminution of the number of cases of bone fracture and colon cancer. These results were obtained in a population of women with a mean age of 63 +/- 7 years, many of whom were already presenting relative risks of diseases

Problematic Social Media Use or Social Media Addiction in Pediatric Populations.

With the advent of smartphones and the popularization of social media sites at the beginning of the twenty-first century, children and adolescents have been exposed to a world of virtual interactions in social networking sites that are designed to increase engagement of the user for profit. In this article, we review the epidemiology of use of social media, its addictive features, and potential negative consequences of problematic use, and the research on current interventions known to reduce use. We also give recommendations spanning from the policy to the individual level for children to bui

When green enters a room: A scoping review of epidemiological studies on indoor plants and mental health.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of epidemiological studies are investigating the association between outdoor greenery and various health outcomes. However, in the case of indoor plants, although experimental studies seem relatively abundant, epidemiological studies remain scarce, and research considering the mental health effects is even more limited. Thus, we aim to identify and summarise the relevant epidemiological studies on indoor plant exposure and mental health via this scoping review, thereby presenting the current state of knowledge and research niches. METHODS: PubMed and PsycINFO we

Reporting Guidelines for Survey Reporting (G-SURE): protocol for guideline development.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to develop a reporting guideline for epidemiological survey reports, referred to as "Guidelines for Survey Reporting (G-SURE)." Methods: To develop G-SURE, we adopted a systematic approach, starting with a detailed review of recent survey reports in Public Health Weekly Report, Eurosurveillance, and Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and an analysis of current reporting standards. After drafting the guidelines, our team conducted an in-depth internal evaluation to assess their effectiveness and applicability. We then refined the guidelines based o

Descriptive epidemiology of Fabry disease among beneficiaries of the Specified Disease Treatment Research Program in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease (FD) is a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder and is included in the Specified Disease Treatment Research Program in Japan, which subsidizes medical care for beneficiaries with rare and other, designated diseases. However, no report on the epidemiologic features of Fabry disease has been published in Japan. METHODS: We used clinical research data reports submitted to the program between 2003 and 2008 to assess the epidemiologic features of 315 beneficiaries with FD. RESULTS: Of the 315 program beneficiaries, 198 were men (mean age, 37.4 years) and 117 were wome

Misclassification in assessment of diabetogenic risk using electronic health records.

PURPOSE: Suspected diabetogenic effects or drug indication may increase testing for diabetes mellitus (DM), resulting in measurement bias when evaluating diabetogenic drug effects. We sought to evaluate the validity of electronic health record data in determining DM risk. METHODS: We used time-dependent Cox proportional hazard models within a retrospective cohort design to assess associations between use of antihypertensives, statins, atypical antipsychotics, and antidepressants, and two endpoints: (i) DM onset defined as fasting blood glucose (BG) ≥126 mg/dl, random BG ≥200 mg/dl, HbA1c ≥7.0

The 'Antiretrovirals, Sexual Transmission Risk and Attitudes' (ASTRA) study. Design, methods and participant characteristics.

Life expectancy for people diagnosed with HIV has improved dramatically however the number of new infections in the UK remains high. Understanding patterns of sexual behaviour among people living with diagnosed HIV, and the factors associated with having condom-less sex, is important for informing HIV prevention strategies and clinical care. In addition, in view of the current interest in a policy of early antiretroviral treatment (ART) for all people diagnosed with HIV in the UK, it is of particular importance to assess whether ART use is associated with increased levels of condom-less sex. Congenital heart disease in Saudi Arabia: current epidemiology and future projections.

To provide an overview of the epidemiology of congenital heart disease, the results of epidemiological studies done in 4 regions of Saudi Arabia (August 1988-February 2000) and 2604 individuals with congenital heart disease were evaluated. Ventricular septal defect was the commonest lesion (33.9%) followed by atrial septal defect (18.1%). Overall, sex distribution was similar; for 3 conditions, more males than females were affected. Of 2269 (59%) presenting in the first year of life, 566 (24.9%) had neonatal congenital heart disease. Down syndrome was the commonest cause. Distribution of speci

Intergenerational trends in reproduction: Infertility and pregnancy loss.

This review article summarises the evidence for intergenerational trends observed to date within infertility and pregnancy loss. There appears to be evidence of intergenerational trends between mothers and daughters for the age at menopause, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), male factor infertility and miscarriage. At present, there is no evidence for a predisposition to stillbirth between mothers and daughters. One study found an association with familial predisposition for ectopic pregnancy. Very few studies have considered the potential for paternal transmission of risk of

Research opportunities for the primary prevention and management of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease: a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute workshop report.

Primary prevention of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) encompasses the timely diagnosis and adequate treatment of the superficial group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections pharyngitis and impetigo. GAS is the only known inciting agent in the pathophysiology of the disease. However, sufficient evidence indicates that the uptake and delivery of primary prevention approaches in RHD-endemic regions are significantly suboptimal. This report presents expert deliberations on priority research and implementation opportunities for primary prevention of ARF/RHD that were develo

Epidemiology of inflammatory bowel diseases in iran and Asia; a mini review.

The prevalence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) is set to stabilize in Western Europe and North America, as opposed to its increasing trend in developing countries in Asia. The epidemiology of IBDs in areas where the incidence and prevalence are relatively low provides an opportunity for researchers to determine the unknown aspects of them. In this review article, the PubMed and MEDLINE databases were searched from 1970 to 2012 and the epidemiological aspects assessed in Iranian articles were compared with identical subjects in other Asian countries. During this period, there were 21 docu

The Relationship of Estrogen Changes With Sinonasal Symptoms and Disease in Women: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) are inflammatory-driven processes. Previous research has shown an influence of sex hormones on inflammatory processes, including asthma. The purpose of this scoping review was to assess the existing epidemiologic literature looking at the relationship of estrogen to sinonasal symptoms in women. DATA SOURCES: PubMed and Embase were searched with "estrogen," "rhinitis," and "female," along with related terms. METHODS: All English language articles examining the relationship between estrogen changes and sinonasal symptoms in women were includ

What is known from the existing literature about the available interventions for pelvic floor dysfunction among female athletes? A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Female athletes may be at higher risk of developing pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). However, despite the great number of epidemiologic studies, the interventions have not been standardized. AIM: The present scoping review aimed to map and summarize the literature to identify the available interventions for PFD among female athletes. METHODS: Seven databases were searched up to May 2021. Studies considering female athletes practising sports at any performance level with any type of PFD were eligible for inclusion. Any clinical intervention and any context were considered. No langu

Does an Otolaryngology-Specific Database Have Added Value? A Comparative Feasibility Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: There are multiple nationally representative databases that support epidemiologic and outcomes research, and it is unknown whether an otolaryngology-specific resource would prove indispensable or superfluous. Therefore, our objective was to determine the feasibility of analyses in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) and National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) databases as compared with the otolaryngology-specific Creating Healthcare Excellence through Education and Research (CHEER) database. STUDY DESIGN: Parallel analyses in 2 data sets. SETTING
