A thermal epiglottitis after feeding hot food is a rare event in infancy. A 3 month old infant developed typical symptoms of an acute epiglottitis after feeding him hot vegetables. The child was intubated and treated with steroids and antibiotics. A laryngo-tracheobronchoscopy was performed. After 48 h he was extubated.

Fourteen consecutive cases of acute epiglottitis were treated by nasotracheal intubation during a ten-month period. The duration of intubation averaged 47.2 hours. No mortality or morbidity occurred. Mean hospitalization was 4.6 days. This study demonstrates the ease of maintaining an assured airway by nasotracheal intubation in cases of acute epiglottitis.

Acute epiglottitis by nonbacterial pathogens is an uncommon but life-threatening clinical entity. Herein, we report the concomitant occurrence of Candida epiglottitis and mucosal and visceral Varicella zoster virus infection in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Both infections were atypical in their presentation, occurred in a severely immunocompromised host, and required invasive procedures for diagnosis.

During a 25-year period 168 adults and 111 children in Copenhagen County were treated for acute epiglottitis. Four patients, two children and two adults died, of these the two children and one adult had a cardiac arrest on arriving at the hospital. From July 1977 to May 1987, 27 children with acute epiglottitis were treated in our intensive care unit. Haemophilus influenzae type b was identified by positive blood culture in 14 of 27 cases. We present a modification of the traditional Epiglottis Stiffening Operation technique for the management of primary epiglottic collapse in OSA, introducing carbon dioxide (CO2) laser application to promote anterior repositioning of the epiglottis. The use of laser yielded promising improvements in polysomnographic parameters compared to baseline and allowed for modulable thermal effects on target tissues by adjusting power, spot size, and exposure time, thereby reducing the risk of cartilage injury from excessive collateral heat.
