Hemorrhagic meningitis is considered a complication of anthrax and was reported in about 50% of deadly cases in humans and non-human primates (NHP). Recently we demonstrated in Guinea pigs and rabbits that 100% of the B. anthracis-infected animals presented histopathology of meningitis at the time of death, some without any sign of hemorrhage. A similar pathology was observed in animals that succumbed following infection with the toxin deficient mutant, thus indicating that anthrax meningitis is a toxin-independent phenomenon. Increased use of the biocidal compound tri-n-butyltin (TBT) in antifouling paints has prompted research aimed at determining the mechanism for TBT toxicity. Past investigations indicate that the primary cellular target for TBT is the cell membrane. Rouleaux formation of washed red blood cells (r.b.c.s) from subjects with sickle cell trait (HbAS) was measured by the rapid coagulation method. The r.b.c.s were suspended in the donor's native plasma or in 1.3% dextran in phosphate-buffered Ringer solution at pHs of 6.5, 7.4 and 8.2. HbAS cells showed more rouleaux formation than HbAA (normal) cells in plasma (P less than 0.005). Plasma fibrinogen concentration of HbAS and HbAA subjects did not differ significantly (mean 2.9, s.d. 0.7 g l-1 for both groups). After 3 weeks of alcohol intoxication, the brains of rats were searched with light- and electron microscopy for degenerating nervous tissue and agglutination of erythrocytes in the blood vessels. After a boiler explosion on a ship 12 men with cutaneous scalding of 90-100% of body surface were found dead. 15 other fatalities occured after different intervals. This investigation deals with the histomorphologic changes in those 12 cases of instantaneous death. The most important findings consisted of: 1.
