Sequential healing of the elevated sinus floor with different size of antrostomy: a histomorphometric study in rabbits.

PURPOSE: To study the influence of the access window dimensions on the healing at the antrostomy and within the augmented maxillary sinus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A maxillary sinus augmentation was performed in twenty-four albino New Zealand rabbits. Antrostomies of 3 × 6 mm (small) or 5 × 6 mm (large) in dimensions were randomly prepared in each animal. A collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone was used to fill the elevated region, and an equine collagen membrane was placed on the antrostomies. Three different groups were formed, based on the time of euthanasia, i.e., 2, 4, and 8 weeks fr

Nonexposure endolaparoscopic full-thickness resection with simple suturing technique.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Current endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR) methods are limited by their transmural communication and exposure of tumor to the peritoneum. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of a new resection technique that does not expose the mucosa to the peritoneum, although it involves an easy and secure suture method, which could be applied in the clinical setting. METHODS: The nonexposure endolaparoscopic full-thickness resection with simple suturing technique was performed in four pigs. This new technique includes the steps of laparoscopic seromuscular suturin

A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF PATHOLOGIC FINDINGS IN CAPTIVE ROCK HYRAX (PROCAVIA CAPENSIS) IN THE UNITED STATES.

A retrospective examination of gross and histologic reports was performed to find common lesions in young and adult captive rock hyrax ( Procavia capensis ) from multiple zoo populations. One hundred and thirty-seven reports were analyzed from specimens that were submitted to Northwest ZooPath from 1997 to 2013. Histologic findings from necropsy and biopsy reports and causes of mortality only from necropsy reports were compiled to determine the most common findings. Within the study population, 41 (30%) were male, 62 (45%) were female, and the remainder (34, 25%) were of undetermined sex. Of t

Necrotizing hepatitis caused by Clostridium novyi type B in a dog with no predisposing liver lesions: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Infectious necrotic hepatitis (INH) is typically a disease of ruminants caused by Clostridium novyi type B. Growth of the causative agent is supported by development of an anaerobic environment within the liver. In dogs, C. novyi is rare and has only been previously reported as a post-mortem diagnosis. In one case, infection was secondary to metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma and the other was presumptively diagnosed on histopathology of a hepatic lesion in a dog initially presented for acute collapse. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old spayed, female mixed breed dog was presented

Multimodal analgesia in a Southern White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) with pentosan polysulfate, gabapentin, amantadine and phenylbutazone to manage chronic pain.

A 38-year-old white rhinoceros bull (Ceratotherium simum) was treated with phenylbutazone over a period of four years for chronic osteoarthritic and neuropathic pain of the thoracic limbs. Initially the lameness was sporadic and responded well to phenylbutazone (4 mg/kg PO SID). The lameness increased in severity during the winter months. Four years after treatment was initiated, there was an increase in the severity and incidence of the lameness. Analgesia was augmented by the addition of non-conventional analgesic drugs. Pentosan polysulfate was administered IM at 3 mg/kg once a week for two

The epidemiology of cruciate ligament rupture in an insured Swedish dog population.

Cruciate ligament rupture (CLR) is a common orthopedic disorder in dogs. The study objectives were to evaluate incidence rate (IR), cause-specific mortality rate (CSMR) and risk factors for CLR in insured dogs. A single cohort study of dogs insured in Agria Pet Insurance in Sweden (2011-2016) was performed. Age at diagnosis, IR, CSMR and relative risk (RR) for CLR was calculated overall and per breed. The cohort included just over 600,000 dogs. The IR of CLR was 23.8 (95% confidence interval, 23.1-24.6) cases per 10,000 DYAR. The breeds with highest RR of CLR were Boerboel and Dogo Canario, wh

Myocarditis secondary to Borrelia infection in a dog: a case report.

The aim of this study was to recognise the etiological factor of a disease with symptoms of lameness and cardiac failure, which occurred in one dog 4 weeks after invasion by ticks. A serological examination as well as molecular examination (PCR) was done. In the sample of the serum, the presence of antibodies specific to Borrelia burgdorferi were detected. Antibiotic therapy with doxycycline did not cause significant improvement, so the owners of the dog decided about its euthanasia. During the necroscopy, a dilated heart was recognised. In the heart samples, the genetic material of Borrelia w

Severe systemic hypertension in a cat with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism.

A seven-year-old Burmese cat was presented with sudden onset blindness. On physical examination, the cat had bilateral retinal detachment and severe systemic hypertension. Further clinical investigations revealed pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. Antihypertensive therapy was discontinued when the hypertension resolved after bilateral adrenalectomy. Systolic blood pressure remained normal until 19 months post-operatively when systemic hypertension recurred and was attributed to chronic kidney disease. The cat was euthanased 47 months after initial presentation. A pituitary adenoma was i

Bilateral laryngeal paralysis associated with hepatic dysfunction and hepatic encephalopathy in six ponies and four horses.

Six ponies and four horses with a mean (sd) age of 15.9 (6.0) years developed sudden-onset bilateral laryngeal paralysis (BLP) in association with hepatic dysfunction. Nine of them had been referred for the investigation of respiratory distress, and one pony had been referred for weight loss before BLP developed. Nine of the animals had clinicopathological evidence of liver disease, and nine had histological evidence of liver disease. All of the animals had one or more of the following: hepatic encephalopathy (in eight), hyperammonaemia (in six) and endoscopic evidence of BLP (in nine). Three

Leiomyosarcoma of the pericardium, with epicardial metastases and peripheral eosinophilia in a dog.

A dog with a history of dyspnoea, anorexia and ascites showed on examination signs of right-sided heart failure, pleural effusion and peripheral eosinophilia. Diagnostic imaging suggested the presence of a mediastinal mass, and histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of a biopsy sample led to a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. On post-mortem examination, an extensive mass was found, which encircled the heart and obliterated the pericardial sac, with probable metastatic spread to the epicardium. Eosinophilic infiltration of the neoplastic mass, lamina propria of the stomach and duoden

Malignant catarrhal fever in a captive American bison (Bison bison) in Italy.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a fatal, systemic disease of cattle and other domestic and wild ruminants that, in Europe, is caused by Ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2). American bison (Bison bison) are highly susceptible to the disease. An adult American bison, housed in a zoo in southern Italy in close cohabitation with a group of domestic sheep (Ovis aries aries) displayed clinical signs that resembled the acute form of MCF. By real-time polymerase chain reaction, OvHV-2 DNA was detected intravitam in blood, in nasal and ocular swabs, and postmortem in tissue samples of the bison. By indirec

Protothecal granulomatous meningoencephalitis in a dog.

A case of central nervous system protothecosis in a dog is reported. A three-year-old male Maremma sheepdog was referred with a two month history of diarrhoea associated with progressive tetraparesis, depression and right circling. Stupor, severe proprioceptive deficits, bilateral decreased thoracic limb flexor reflexes and bilateral deficit of the menace reaction were detected on neurological examination and a multi-focal neurological localisation was suspected. Histopathological evaluation revealed multi-focal granulomatous foci in the thalamus, hippocampus and caudal brainstem containing nu

Pontine infarction in a dog with unilateral involvement of the trigeminal motor nucleus and pyramidal tract.

An unusual case of unilateral trigeminal neuronopathy in a dog is reported, in which the motor nucleus of the trigeminal nerve and the ipsilateral corticospinal tract were destroyed, apparently by a cerebrovascular accident (stroke). Hemiplegia did not occur. Neuropathological changes are described, including remyelination by Schwann cells in the central nervous system. The case illustrates the importance of central nervous system post-mortem examination when establishing causes of cranial nerve paralysis.

Intracranial epidermoid cyst in a horse.

An intracranial epidermoid cyst was diagnosed in a Haflinger gelding aged 12 years suffering from episodes of neurological disturbance, apathy and fever. The extracerebral cyst was located in the region of the tentorium cerebelli and measured 9 x 8 x 5 cm. It displaced the cerebral hemispheres anteriorly and compressed the cerebellum and brainstem underneath. Histologically, the cyst was lined by keratinizing, stratified squamous epithelium and contained keratin scales, debris, focal haemorrhages, and degenerating inflammatory cells. The epithelium was supported by a vascularized fibrous capsu
