Increased cognitive functioning in symptomatic Huntington's disease as revealed by behavioral and event-related potential indices of auditory sensory memory and attention.

Cognitive functions are thought to deteriorate globally in late stages of various neurodegenerative disorders. Here we describe that this general assumption is not justified and fails in Huntington's disease (HD). Presymptomatic gene mutation carriers (pHDs) and healthy controls performed worse compared with symptomatic HDs in an auditory signal detection task. During task performance, behavioral data and event-related potentials (ERPs) [i.e., MMN (mismatch negativity), P3a, and RON (reorienting negativity)] were recorded. Not only behavioral performance but also neurophysiological correlates

Disrupted sensory gating in pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: Some neurochemical evidence as well as recent studies on molecular genetics suggest that pathologic gambling may be related to dysregulated dopamine neurotransmission. METHODS: The current study examined sensory (motor) gating in pathologic gamblers as a putative measure of endogenous brain dopamine activity with prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle eye-blink response and the auditory P300 event-related potential. Seventeen pathologic gamblers and 21 age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects were assessed. Both prepulse inhibition measures were recorded under passive

Behavioral and electrophysiological changes following an auditory-cognitive telerehabilitation program in children with cochlear implants.

BACKGROUND: Children with cochlear implants (CIs) may continue to experience auditory-cognitive difficulties that affect everyday listening. Telerehabilitation may increase access to auditory training, but evidence combining behavioral and electrophysiological outcomes remains limited. This study characterized pre-to-post behavioral and neural changes over an eight-week auditory-cognitive telerehabilitation period in children with CIs and normal-hearing (NH) peers. METHODS: Thirty children aged 7-12 years participated in this quasi-experimental pre-post study: 15 bilateral CI users and 15 age

Biomechanical and neurocognitive performance outcomes of walking with transtibial limb loss while challenged by a concurrent task.

Individuals who have sustained loss of a lower limb may require adaptations in sensorimotor and control systems to effectively utilize a prosthesis, and the interaction of these systems during walking is not clearly understood for this patient population. The aim of this study was to concurrently evaluate temporospatial gait mechanics and cortical dynamics in a population with and without unilateral transtibial limb loss (TT). Utilizing motion capture and electroencephalography, these outcomes were simultaneously collected while participants with and without TT completed a concurrent task of v

Hypomania and depression associated with distinct neural activity for immediate and future rewards.

Bipolar spectrum and unipolar depressive disorders have been associated with distinct and opposite profiles of reward-related neural activity. These opposite profiles may reflect a differential preexisting vulnerability for both types of disorders. In support, recent ERP studies find that, following reward feedback, a larger reward positivity (RewP) is associated with greater vulnerability for bipolar spectrum disorders, whereas a smaller RewP is associated with greater vulnerability for depression. However, prior studies have investigated only immediate rewards and have not examined dimension

Source analysis of P3a and P3b components to investigate interaction of depression and anxiety in attentional systems.

This study examined the impact of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and the comorbidity of these disorders on the regional electrophysiological features of brain activity. Sixty-four-channel event-related potentials (ERP) were acquired during a visual oddball task in patients with depressive disorder, patients with anxiety disorders, patients with comorbid depressive and anxiety disorders and healthy subjects. An fMRI-constrained source model was applied to ERP to identify different cortical activities in the patient and control groups. Comorbid patients showed an abnormal frontal-greate

Auditory mismatch negativity and P3a in response to duration and frequency changes in the early stages of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: A shorter duration of untreated psychosis in patients with schizophrenia results in better symptomatic and functional outcomes. Therefore, identifying biological markers in the early stages of psychosis is an important step toward early detection and intervention. Mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a are leading candidate biomarkers. MMN measures differ in their sensitivity to varying deviants. However, this has not been fully addressed in assessing the early stages of psychosis. In the current study, we examined MMN/P3a to duration deviant (dMMN/dP3a) and frequency deviant (fMMN/fP3a

Basal ganglia volume is strongly related to P3 event-related potential in premanifest Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: The P3 event-related potential (ERP) is presumably partly generated by the basal ganglia. Because degeneration of these brain structures starts many years before clinical disease onset in Huntington's disease (HD), studying the interplay between P3 characteristics and basal ganglia volumes in 'premanifest' carriers might lead to new insights into the disease process. METHODS: Fourteen premanifest\ HD mutation carriers and twelve non-mutation carriers underwent clinical, MRI and P3-ERP investigations. The P3 was measured during the Sustained Attention to Response Task. RESULTS: P3

Auditory P300 abnormalities and left posterior superior temporal gyrus volume reduction in schizophrenia.

Abnormalities in the auditory P300 event-related potential are one of the most robust findings in schizophrenia. To investigate the brain source(s) of this major functional abnormality, we combined P300 recordings with the use of a new generation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to examine specific temporal lobe gray matter regions of interest in schizophrenics and normal controls. In schizophrenics, gray matter volume reductions in the left posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG), which includes Heschl's gyrus and the planum temporale, were highly and specifically associated wit

Assessment of balance, sleep quality, and depression in relation to attention in Parkinson's disease: A cross-sectional P300 study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. Attention deficits are common in patients with PD, and balance can be affected by sleep quality and depression. The auditory event-related potential (ERP) P300 tool is associated with attention and discrimination processes and is a sensitive indicator of attention. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effects of balance, sleep quality, and depression on attention in individuals with PD using P300 latency. DESIGN AND SETTING: In this cross-sectional study,

Improving Performance of Devanagari Script Input-Based P300 Speller Using Deep Learning.

The performance of an existing Devanagari script (DS) input-based P300 speller with conventional machine learning techniques suffers from low information transfer rate (ITR). This occurs due to its required large size of display, i.e., 8 × 8 row-column (RC) paradigm which exhibits issues like crowding effect, adjacency, fatigue, task difficulty, and required large number of trials for character recognition. For P300 detection, deep learning algorithms have shown the state of art performance compared to the conventional machine learning algorithms in the recent past. Therefore, authors have bee

Cortical activity and children's rituals, habits and other repetitive behavior: a visual P300 study.

This study examines the link between children's repetitive, ritualistic, behavior and cortical brain activity. Twelve typically developing children between the ages of 6 and 12 years were administered two visual P300, oddball tasks with a 32-electrode electroencephalogram (EEG) system. One of the oddball tasks was specifically designed to reflect sensitivity to asymmetry, a phenomenon common in children and in a variety of disorders involving compulsive behavior. Parents completed the Childhood Routines Inventory. Children's repetitive, compulsive-like behaviors were strongly associated with f

[Evidence of cerebral involvement in the chronic stage of Chagas disease obtained using the P300 potential and quantified electroencephalography].

It is already known the involvement of the peripheral nervous system in chronic stages of Chagas disease. Tomographic and neuropsychological evidence of brain compromise has been included recently. In order to evaluate the neurophysiological counterpart of cerebral involvement, we studied P300 evoked potential and quantified EEG (qEEG) of 35 patients (26-55 years), and compared to an equal number of control subjects (29-55 years). We have found increased P300 latency compared to the control group (331.24 +/- 24. 02 vs 318.86 +/- 23.18) (p=0.01716). qEEG showed lower relative Beta 1 power in th

Semantic cortical activation in dyslexic readers.

The combined temporal and spatial resolution of MEG (magnetoencephalography) was used to study whether the same brain areas are similarly engaged in reading comprehension in normal and developmentally dyslexic adults. To extract a semantically sensitive stage of brain activation we manipulated the appropriateness of sentence-ending words to the preceding sentence context. Sentences, presented visually one word at a time, either ended with a word that was (1) expected, (2) semantically appropriate but unexpected, (3) semantically anomalous but sharing the initial letters with the expected word,

Measurement of P300 and sleep characteristics in patients with hypersomnia: do P300 latencies, P300 amplitudes, and multiple sleep latency and maintenance of wakefulness tests measure different factors?

To explore further the relationship between ease of falling asleep, ability to maintain wakefulness, attention and information processing in sleep apnea and other sleep disorders, we conducted a thorough analysis of the similarities, differences and correlations between auditory and visual P300 amplitudes and latencies, and tests of sleepiness. The 283 consecutive patients presenting with hypersomnia were administered nocturnal polysomnography. Next day they underwent auditory and visual P300 recordings, Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT). Correlation

Neural Correlates of Craving in Methamphetamine Abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine is a powerful psychostimulant that causes significant neurological impairments with long-lasting effects and has provoked serious international concerns about public health. Denial of drug abuse and drug craving are two important factors that make the diagnosis and treatment extremely challenging. Here, we present a novel and rapid noninvasive method with potential application for differentiation and monitoring methamphetamine abuse. METHODS: Visual stimuli comprised a series of images with neutral and methamphetamine-related content. A total of 10 methamphetamin

Blood pressure variability and cognitive function in older hypertensives.

Several studies have shown that cerebrovascular organ damage can related not only to average blood pressure (BP) levels, but also to BP variability. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between 24 hr BP variability and cognitive function in older hypertensives. Forty older, never treated hypertensives were submitted to 24 hr ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) and subdivided, according to the variability of the systolic BP (SBP), in two groups: 23 with higher (> PV) and 17 with lower (< PV) SBP variability, defined as the standard deviation (SD) of the mean 24 hr SBP values an

Spatial and Time Domain Feature of ERP Speller System Extracted via Convolutional Neural Network.

Feature of event-related potential (ERP) has not been completely understood and illiteracy problem remains unsolved. To this end, P300 peak has been used as the feature of ERP in most brain-computer interface applications, but subjects who do not show such peak are common. Recent development of convolutional neural network provides a way to analyze spatial and temporal features of ERP. Here, we train the convolutional neural network with 2 convolutional layers whose feature maps represented spatial and temporal features of event-related potential. We have found that nonilliterate subjects' ERP
