OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project is to decrease the rates of midstream urine sample contamination through standardization of evidence-based techniques among nurses.
INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infection is a prevalent health problem worldwide. The diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infection depend on a thorough physical examination and the results of an uncontaminated midstream specimen of urine. However, improper techniques used in the collection often cause sample contamination, leading to delayed diagnosis and the use of inappropriate antibiotics for treatment. As nurses are

BACKGROUND: Nursing staff, caring for frail older people in long-term care, needs to have a certain level of clinical competence to identify diseases at an early stage and to assess and provide good nursing care. In Finland, nursing care is based on evidence-based and high-quality nursing care. However, earlier inspections by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health showed many discrepancies between the nursing staff's clinical competence and adequate and continuous education.
AIM: This study aimed to explore nursing staff, i.e. the clinical competence and decision-making ski

INTRODUCTION: Since the first orthopaedic nurse certification (ONC) examination in 1988, more than 16,000 nurses have earned the ONC credential, with nearly 5000 currently certified in orthopaedic nursing, advanced practice, or nurse navigation roles. Certification validates expertise in musculoskeletal care and supports improved clinical practice, professional identity, and organizational performance.
METHODS: The Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board survey included a representative sample of over 300 orthopaedic-certified nurses. Survey items were based on the Perceived Value of Certifica

The introduction of this pathway for the prevention and management of pressure ulcers was influenced by the development of the pathway for the management of a patient with a fractured neck of femur. Systematic documentation of preventative measures for patients with a fractured neck of femur helped reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers in this high-risk group. The original draft was informed by evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. This draft of the pathway was piloted, reviewed and changed in line with current evidence and comments from users. It was invaluable to pilot the pathway a

Nurses are in an ideal position to talk to their patients of reproductive age about alcohol use and encourage the prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies. Effective conversations can be efficiently included in the clinical encounter to identify alcohol misuse and offer appropriate follow-up. This report presents results of an environmental scan of resources relevant to nursing professionals and nurses' role in addressing alcohol misuse. Gaps in nursing education and practice guidelines with regard to defining the nursing role in preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancies were revealed. Findings

BACKGROUND: Understanding the hierarchical structure and supply priorities of long-term care (LTC) needs among disabled older adults is essential for responsive care systems. However, existing assessments fail to translate findings into actionable resource allocation strategies, leaving nursing managers without evidence-based guidance for prioritization.
AIM: To identify the hierarchical structure of LTC service demands among disabled older adults using the Kano model and to establish an evidence-based supply priority order through integrated entropy-weighted TOPSIS analysis, thereby providin

BACKGROUND: Advanced practice nurses play a vital role in healthcare innovation, delivering high-quality care and improving patient outcomes. Leadership is a core competency of advanced practice nurses, empowering them to drive systemic improvements and foster collaboration. However, these master-level educated nurses often encounter challenges in assuming leadership roles, including limited recognition and competing demands on their time. The growing volume of healthcare-related research, combined with the lack of a comprehensive evidence base on the determinants and outcomes of their leaders

AIM: This paper will examine racism's role in calculating fracture risk via the use of race- and ethnicity-based calculations and offer guidance for nurses to mitigate the risk of further exacerbating race-based inequities in fracture care.
BACKGROUND: Using race adjustments in fracture risk calculation, such as in the FRAX, reflects the history of systemic racism in nursing and medicine, particularly in screening for and treating osteoporosis. Osteoporosis-related fractures, which result in increased costs, disability, and death, are a public health problem.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the educational and practice gaps that limit genomic competency among oncology nurses and to propose strategies to strengthen workforce preparedness. Genomically informed cancer care has redefined oncology practice by enabling precision prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through germline and somatic biomarker testing. However, the oncology nursing workforce remains insufficiently prepared to deliver this care safely and effectively.
METHODS: A review of peer-reviewed literature.
RESULTS: Based on the literature review, despite more than two decades of national initia

INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE: Hip fracture rates in US nursing homes are alarmingly high, and low treatment rates of osteoporosis suggest a large degree of therapeutic nihilism among health care providers. Reports of reduction in hip fracture rates in the nursing home have been scarce, and experts wonder whether evidence-based treatments, effective in younger populations, will transfer to nursing home residents.
METHODS: A practice redesign project was undertaken in response to high rates of hip fracture in northwest Arkansas nursing homes. Hip fracture rates during the 3 years prior to the pro

Nurses manage patients with common infectious diseases by following institutional guidelines based on expert advice, evidence in the literature, and a wealth of experience. Today nurses are challenged to provide care to patients with multidrug-resistant organisms and virulent infectious diseases such as Ebola virus disease. Management of some patients with virulent infectious diseases occurs in the context of minimal experience with the pathogen, course of infection, diagnostics, nursing care, and treatment. Limited evidence exists in the US or international literature about direct nursing car

This article explores how nurses can use evidence-based practice to appraise the rationale and evidence for specific nursing procedures or practices. A literature review of published evidence on honey dressings for diabetic foot ulcers was conducted by a novice researcher (lead author) under the supervision of a lecturer (second author). A methodology was followed to construct an answerable research question and to guide the search and retrieval of evidence. The strengths and limitations of a selected study were appraised, and its implications for practice considered. This article highlights a
