Parsing Neurometabolic Signatures of Multiple Sclerosis with MRSI and cPCA.

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Imaging (MRSI) offers spatially-resolved, neurometabolic information, acquired non-invasively at whole-brain scales from human subjects. Analysis of MRSI however, is extremely challenging. The metabolic information is highly convolved, and sparsely distributed across millions of spatial-spectral datapoints, allowing for little direct human interpretation. Conversely, the overall low signal-to-noise with high-intensity artifacts can confound unsupervised machine learning approaches. These technical barriers have left much of the potential of MRSI unrealized. We a

Generalizability of Human Activity Recognition Machine Learning Models from non-Parkinson's to Parkinson's Disease Patients.

Recent evidence shows that high-intensity exercises reduce tremors and stiffness in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, there is insufficient evidence on the types of exercises; in effect, high-intensity may be a personalized measure. Recent progress in automated Human Activity Recognition using machine learning (ML) models shows potential for better monitoring of PD patients. However, ML models must be calibrated to ignore tremors and accurately identify activity and its intensity. We report findings from a study where we trained ML models using data from medically validated triple synchronous

Prediction of the development of acute kidney injury following cardiac surgery by machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) is a major complication that results in increased morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery. Most established prediction models are limited to the analysis of nonlinear relationships and fail to fully consider intraoperative variables, which represent the acute response to surgery. Therefore, this study utilized an artificial intelligence-based machine learning approach thorough perioperative data-driven learning to predict CSA-AKI. METHODS: A total of 671 patients undergoing cardiac surgery from August 2016 to August 20

A Fast Principal Component Analysis Method For Calculating The ECG Derived Respiration.

In this paper, we present a principal component analysis (PCA) method for estimating the respiration from overnight ECG recording. In comparison to other published methods, our method is very fast to compute and has low memory requirements, which makes it suitable for processing long duration ECG recordings. We used our method to derive respiratory features for the ECG which were then used to identify epochs of sleep apnoea from the ECG. Three classifiers including the extreme learning machine (ELM), linear discriminant analysis, and support vector machine were used to detect sleep apnoea. The

Identification and validation of a chronic kidney disease prediction model after radical nephrectomy: a multicenter cohort retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Long-term renal function is an important follow-up after radical nephrectomy for renal carcinoma. Predictive models can help identify patients at risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and enable early intervention. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 649 patients who underwent radical nephrectomy at eight medical centers. The primary cohort from the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University comprised 329 patients, randomly divided into training sets (n = 229) and internal validation sets (n = 100) at a 7:3 ratio. An additional 320 patients from seven other centers c

Using CT radiomic features based on machine learning models to subtype adrenal adenoma.

BACKGROUND: Functioning and non-functioning adrenocortical adenoma are two subtypes of benign adrenal adenoma, and their differential diagnosis is crucial. Current diagnostic procedures use an invasive method, adrenal venous sampling, for endocrinologic assessment. METHODS: This study proposes establishing an accurate differential model for subtyping adrenal adenoma using computed tomography (CT) radiomic features and machine learning (ML) methods. Dataset 1 (289 patients with adrenal adenoma) was collected to develop the models, and Dataset 2 (54 patients) was utilized for external validatio

Machine Learning Enabled Fluorescent Anti-Freezing Core-Shell Hydrogel Realizing Deep-Sea Morse Code Communication for Human-Machine Interaction Engineering.

Underwater intelligent systems demand flexible materials with robustness, environmental tolerance, and functional integration. Hydrogels, which combine flexibility with conductivity, show promise but often fail under harsh conditions. Herein, an antifreezing, antiswelling hydrogel with core-shell architecture was fabricated by ion concentration gradient modulation. Polyacrylamide/poly(acrylic acid) pregel immersed in Al3+ solution produced a concentration gradient. The external layer generates a dense metal oxide film, acting as a robust protective armor, while the inner polymer network preser

Domain-Specific Prediction of Clinical Progression in Parkinson's Disease Using the Mosaic Approach.

PURPOSE: Due to the highly individualized clinical manifestation of Parkinson's disease (PD), personalized patient care may require domain-specific assessment of neurological disability. Evidence from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies has proposed that heterogenous clinical manifestation corresponds to heterogeneous cortical disease burden, suggesting customized, high-resolution assessment of cortical pathology as a candidate biomarker for domain-specific assessment. METHOD: Herein, we investigate the potential of the recently proposed Mosaic Approach (MAP), a normative framework for q

Prediction of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo recurrence in postmenopausal women: a machine learning-based clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common peripheral vestibular disorder with a high recurrence rate that significantly impairs patients' quality of life. Multiple studies have confirmed that postmenopausal women, due to endocrine disorders and other physiological characteristics, represent a high-risk population for both BPPV onset and recurrence. However, efficient recurrence prediction models are currently lacking, and traditional assessment methods have limited efficacy, making it difficult to meet the needs of individualized intervention. The aim of this study wa

Rapid identification of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii based on MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is a major pathogen in hospital-acquired infections, and rapid detection is critical for guiding antimicrobial therapy and infection control. Conventional antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) has a long turnaround time, limiting early clinical decision-making. METHODS: We developed a rapid CRAB prediction model by integrating routine clinical matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) data with machine learning. A total of 301 A. baumannii isolates, including 189 CRAB and 112

A quantum machine learning framework for predicting drug sensitivity in multiple myeloma using proteomic data.

In this paper, we introduce QProteoML, a new quantum machine learning (QML) framework for predicting drug sensitivity in Multiple Myeloma (MM) using high-dimensional proteomic data. MM, an extremely heterogeneous condition, displays often mixed responses to treatment, with a large number of patients showing drug resistance to proteasome inhibitors and immune modulatory agents. However, the methods previously used for genomic and proteomic data analysis techniques are plagued by issues of high dimensionality, imbalanced class distribution and feature redundancy, which work against the accurate

Identification of a Specific Biomarker of Acinetobacter baumannii Global Clone 1 by Machine Learning and PCR Related to Metabolic Fitness of ESKAPE Pathogens.

Since the emergence of high-risk clones worldwide, constant investigations have been undertaken to comprehend the molecular basis that led to their prevalent dissemination in nosocomial settings over time. So far, the complex and multifactorial genetic traits of this type of epidemic clones have allowed only the identification of biomarkers with low specificity. A machine learning algorithm was able to recognize unequivocally a biomarker for early and accurate detection of Acinetobacter baumannii global clone 1 (GC1), one of the most disseminated high-risk clones.
