We report a rare case of myiasis caused simultaneously by three dipterous species. A 54 yr-old indigent patient was admitted to Andaraí Hospital with painful eruptions on the scalp. The parieto-occipital sulcus showed two lesions caused by scratching associated with deep, odoriferous and exudative pediculosis. Larvae removed with the help of forceps and vaseline produced 153 adults, identified in the laboratory as 114 specimens of Chrysomya megacephala (F., 1794), 38 of Sarcophaga (Liopygia) ruficornis (F., 1794), and one of Musca domestica (L., 1758).

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthrosis is a degenerative disease which induces intense trouble.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of the study was the parallel analysis of clinical and ultrasound examination in patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthrosis. A group of 88 patients underwent the clinical examination and the outflow and size of flexion were determined, the intensity of pain was assessed by the patient's mark on VAS, the functional ability by HAQ index, and the size of effusion and synovitis by arthrosonography.
RESULTS: The minimal outflow was diagnosed in 34.1% of patients, medium in 22.

Transudative chylothorax is an uncommon type of chylous pleural effusion, typically secondary to chyle leak and a coexisting disorder such as heart failure or liver cirrhosis. Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare inflammatory disease of the small bowel mesentery, and has once previously been reported as a cause of chylothorax. We present the case of an 81-year-old man with a right-side transudative chylothorax associated with congestive heart failure and sclerosing mesenteritis. We discuss potential mechanisms.

The authors report a rare association of uveal effusion with presumed ocular tuberculosis in a male patient who presented clinical improvement with the systemic use of prednisone 40 mg/d and rifampicin 600 mg/d. In addition, relevant aspects of the uveal effusion such as the pathogenesis, evolution of the disease, differential diagnosis and treatment are described through a revision of the literature.

A total of 132 patients were observed after cataract extraction with implantation of T-26 polymethacrylate and RSP-1 collagen copolymer intraocular lenses. Factors of risk of postoperative exudative reaction and fibrosis of the posterior capsule were determined, which depend on previous ophthalmic diseases (glaucoma, uveitis, diabetic angioretinopathy) and concomitant acute and chronic diseases of other organs (bronchopulmonary system, collagenosis, cholecystitis). Moderate changes in the hemogram before surgery are worthy of note.

Interleukin 1 (IL-1) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) were measured by bioassays in suction-blister exudates from lesional skin, from skin immediately following a pressure challenge, and from control skin (not subjected to pressure) of patients with delayed pressure urticaria. IL-6 activity in lesional exudates was significantly higher than in exudates from the other two sites. IL-1 activity in lesional exudates was not significantly higher than in the control exudates, but significantly less IL-1 activity was found immediately after pressure challenge than from the control site.

This is the case report of a forty-seven-year-old man with an ostium secundum atrial septal defect and a very high grade of pulmonary hypertension, associated with a large bilateral perinephric fluid accumulation. The fluid accumulation was remarkably reduced after eleven phlebotomies over a twelve-month period. A pathogenetic relation with the Eisenmenger's syndrome is discussed. No previous report of this association has been found in a survey of the literature.

Injection of 2.5 mg of lambda-carrageenan into the rat pleural cavity resulted in a time-dependent increase in pleural exudate substance P (SP) levels up to 24 hr. Synergistic increases in the exudate formation were observed when a sub-optimal quantity of carrageenan was injected with SP. In a case of relapsing polychondritis it was possible to aspirate a collection of subcutaneous fluid from the patient's involved ear. A determination of total hemolytic complement activity of this fluid was low, suggesting that activation of the complement system may have occurred in the course of the patient's disease and might be related to the pathogenesis of this disorder.
