The effect of age and injury on the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase in facial motor neurons in F344 rats.

Nitric oxide has been implicated in both normal neuronal aging as well as nerve repair events because of its known roles in synaptic plasticity, synaptogenesis and neuroplathologic processes. In this study, we have determined the effect of aging, by comparing brainstem facial motor neurons (FMNs) as well as blood vessels, from adult F344 rats to those in old animals. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression was determined both by immunohistochemistry using an antibody to iNOS on tissue sections and slot blots. In adult rats, iNOS expression was detectable only in FMNs and not in blood

Look me in the face and tell me that I needed to be transferred: Defining the criteria for transferring patients with isolated facial injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the known burden of inappropriate overtriage of patients with facial injuries on the health care system, no comprehensive guidelines for the transfer of these patients exist. The aim of this study was to define guidelines regarding which patients with isolated craniomaxillofacial trauma require transfer to higher levels of care. METHODS: We performed a 5-year review at a Level I trauma center (2017-2021). We included all transferred patients with isolated facial fractures. Patients were stratified into appropriate (those who received any emergency [taken directly to operat…

Spanish translation, cultural, and content validation of the Mouth Impairment and Disability Assessment in a prospective, longitudinal evaluation of pediatric patients with facial burn injuries.

UNLABELLED: The Mouth Impairment and Disability Assessment (MIDA) was developed to provide clinicians with an outcome measure that thoroughly and objectively evaluates the impairment and disabilities associated with burn injuries of the face involving the mouth. However, thus far, it is only available in English and French-Canadian and has not been used with pediatric burn survivors. Additionally, there is limited longitudinal outcome data describing the recovery trajectory associated with burn injuries of the mouth. Thus, the purpose of this study was to translate the MIDA into Spanish, valid

A novel approach used for reconstruction of facial blast wound injury-a case report from the Russo-Ukrainian war.

The current Russo-Ukrainian war has seen the return of similar patterns seen in the First World War. The aim is to demonstrate a case of facial reconstruction using a rotational flap to highlight the utility of dynamic digital thermography (DDT) and handheld Doppler. A 41-year-old soldier suffered a fragmentation injury to the right half of his upper lip from artillery fire in Eastern Ukraine. Dynamic digital thermography and Doppler were used pre-, intra-, and postoperatively to monitor the clinical status of the rotational flap. The patient made an excellent recovery and was discharged on po

The involvement of Neuregulin-1 in the process of facial nerve injury repair through the utilization of dental pulp stem cells.

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve injury often results in poor prognosis due to the challenging process of nerve regeneration. Neuregulin-1, a human calmodulin, is under investigation in this study for its impact on the reparative capabilities of Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs) in facial nerve injury. METHODS: Lentivirus was used to transfect and construct Neuregulin-1 overexpressed DPSCs. Various techniques assessed the effects of Neuregulin-1: osteogenic induction, lipid induction, Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, Western Blot, Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, wound healing, immunofluoresce

Motoneuron-Specific PTEN Deletion in Mice Induces Neuronal Hypertrophy and Also Regeneration after Facial Nerve Injury.

In postmitotic neurons, several tumor suppressor genes (TSGs), including p53, Rb, and PTEN, modulate the axon regeneration success after injury. Particularly, PTEN inhibition is a key driver of successful CNS axon regeneration after optic nerve or spinal cord injury. In contrast, in peripheral neurons, TSG influence in neuronal morphology, physiology, and pathology has not been investigated to the same depth. In this study, we conditionally deleted PTEN from mouse facial motoneurons (Chat-Cre/PtenloxP/loxP ) and analyzed neuronal responses in vivo with or without peripheral facial nerve injury

Stab injury to the preauricular region with laceration of the external carotid artery without involvement of the facial nerve: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Open injuries to the face involving the external carotid artery are uncommon. These injuries are normally associated with laceration of the facial nerve because this nerve is more superficial than the external carotid artery. Hence, external carotid artery lesions are usually associated with facial nerve dysfunction. We present an unusual case report in which the patient had an injury to this artery with no facial nerve compromise. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old Portuguese man sustained a stab wound injury to his right preauricular region with a broken glass. Immediate profuse b

The Promotion of Neural Regeneration in A Rat Facial Nerve Crush Injury Model Using Collagen-Binding NT-3.

Traumatic facial nerve injury, an important cause of facial paralysis, has a number of adverse effects, including facial muscle dysfunction and facial asymmetry. It has been demonstrated in our previous work that native human NT-3 fused with a collagen-binding domain (CBD-NT-3) could bind to collagen, specifically to exert neurotrophic effects, promoting axonal regeneration. To evaluate the effect of CBD-NT-3 in inducing facial nerve regeneration and functional recovery, the differing effects of CBD-NT-3 and native neurotrophin-3 (NAT-NT-3) were observed using the results of facial nerve funct

Fatal facial-intracranial impalement injury in an accidental fall from a height: an autopsy case report with a review of the literature.

Impalement injury to the face and head is of clinical and forensic pathological significance because of its diagnostic pitfalls. This injury often penetrates the orbital, nasal or oral cavity into the skull, but impaling other sites of facial bone is rare. The present case was a rare type of facial-intracranial impalement injury with a direct cerebral arterial laceration. The victim was a 44-year-old man who fell from a height of about 2.5m onto a broken chair and died 6 days later despite surgical treatment. The clinical diagnosis was a 'small abrasion' of the face and 'traumatic intracerebra

Airway management using submental intubation in a patient with multiregional facial fractures from a blast injury: a case report.

Airway management in complex maxillofacial trauma is challenging because intraoperative occlusion assessment requires an unobstructed oral cavity, typically favoring nasotracheal intubation (NTI). However, NTI is absolutely contraindicated in patients with a confirmed or suspected basilar skull fracture and is additionally contraindicated when concurrent nasal bone reduction is required. We report the case of a 36-year-old man with multiregional facial fractures caused by a workplace fire-extinguisher blast, in whom an expansile left ethmoid sinus hematoma raised concern for cribriform plate i

Effects of human embryonic stem cell-derived Schwann cells for nerve regeneration after facial nerve injury.

Facial nerve transection frequently results in incomplete functional recovery despite microsurgical repair due to axonal misalignment and limited intrinsic regenerative capacity. Schwann cells (SCs) are essential for peripheral nerve repair, supporting axon elongation, remyelination, and neurotrophic signaling. Human embryonic stem cell-derived Schwann cells (hESC-SCs), including Schwann cell precursors (SCPs) and immature SCs, constitute a scalable source of cells for tissue-engineered nerve grafts. This study investigated whether silicone conduits loaded with hESC-SCs could enhance facial ne

A multi-institutional machine learning algorithm for prognosticating facial nerve injury following microsurgical resection of vestibular schwannoma.

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are the most common tumor of the skull base with available treatment options that carry a risk of iatrogenic injury to the facial nerve, which can significantly impact patients' quality of life. As facial nerve outcomes remain challenging to prognosticate, we endeavored to utilize machine learning to decipher predictive factors relevant to facial nerve outcomes following microsurgical resection of VS. A database of patient-, tumor- and surgery-specific features was constructed via retrospective chart review of 242 consecutive patients who underwent microsurgical res

Emotion recognition and eye tracking of static and dynamic facial affect: A comparison of individuals with and without traumatic brain injury.

UNLABELLED: Diminished social functioning is often seen after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Mechanisms contributing to these deficits are poorly understood but thought to relate to impaired ability to recognize facial expressions. Static stimuli are often used to investigate ability post-TBI, and there is less evidence using more real-life dynamic stimuli. In addition, most studies rely on behavioral responses alone. The present study investigated the performance of a TBI group and matched non-TBI group on static and dynamic tasks using eye-tracking technology alongside behavioral measures. Th
