Molluscum contagiosum associated with AIDS: a case report with ultrastructural study.

The clinical features of perioral molluscum contagiosum in a patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are described. Light microscopy and thin section electron microscopy revealed epidermal cells in different stages of degeneration showing two types of cytoplasmic inclusions. The basement membrane exhibited discontinuities and multiple laminations which may be a response to viral-induced cytotoxic effects.

The parasubthalamic nucleus: A novel eating center in the brain.

Eating behavior stands as a fundamental determinant of animal survival and growth, intricately regulated by an amalgamation of internal and external stimuli. Coordinated movements of facial muscles and the mandible orchestrate prey capture and food processing, propelled by the allure of taste and rewarding food properties. Conversely, satiation, pain, aversion, negative emotion or perceived threats can precipitate the cessation or avoidance of eating activities. In recent years, the parasubthalamic nucleus (PSTN), located in the lateral hypothalamic area, has emerged as a focal point in feedin

[Essential mixed cryoglobulinemia as a cause of ischemic cerebrovascular accident].

INTRODUCTION: Involvement of the central nervous system in patients with essential mixed cryoglobulinaemia is rare, and there are few cases described in the medical literature. Moreover, the mechanism by which lesions are produced in the central nervous system is still not clear. CLINICAL CASE: We describe the case of a 35 year old woman who presented with dysarthria, weakness and paraesthesia of her left limbs and left central facial paralysis of sudden onset. Vascular studies showed the presence of IgG-IgM polyclonal positive cryoglobulins and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed hepatiti

One-and-a-half syndrome in pontine infarcts: MRI correlates.

The one-and-a-half syndrome is characterised by a lateral gaze palsy in one direction and internuclear ophthalmoplegia in the other. It is due to a unilateral lesion of the dorsal pontine tegmentum, involving the ipsilateral paramedian pontine reticular formation, internuclear fibres of the ipsilateral medical longitudinal fasciculus and, usually, the abducens nucleus. The main causes of this rare syndrome are stroke and multiple sclerosis. Few cases have been reported since the introduction of MRI. Our aim was to examine clinicoradiological correlations in six patients with a one-and-a-half s

Choline acetyltransferase immunoreactive neurons innervating labyrinthine and lateral line sense organs in amphibians.

The goal of the present study was to investigate aspects of the central organization of the neurons belonging to the octavolateralis efferent system of amphibians. The perikarya of three genera, Pleurodeles, Xenopus, and Discoglossus, were located in the brainstem by applying retrograde tracers to the appropriate cranial nerves and choline acetyltransferase immunohistochemistry was used to identify cholinergic neurons. The efferent neurons supplying lateral line (Pleurodeles, Xenopus) and labyrinthine (Pleurodeles, Xenopus, and Discoglossus) end organs were found to intermingle in a single oct

The central projections of the glossopharyngeal and vagus ganglia in the mallard, Anas platyrhynchos L.

The central projections of the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves in the mallard have been studied with the Fink-Heimer I method and are compared to those of the trigeminal and facial nerves. The N. vagus projects ipsilaterally and contralaterally upon the central nuclei of the solitary complex, except the most rostral part of it, upon the n. sulcalis dorsalis, the parasolitary nuclei and the n. commissuralis. The glossopharyngeal nerve contributes to the rostral pole of the n. centralis anterior and to the n. ventrolateralis anterior of the solitary complex, but it has also terminal fields in

The connections of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the brain of the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) as revealed by anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The connections of the rostral and caudal parts of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the carp were studied with the horseradish peroxidase technique. Following ionophoretic peroxidase injections in these motor nuclei, retrogradely labeled cells were observed together with anterogradely labeled motor cell processes. Several cellular areas in thalamus, cerebellum and medulla oblongata were shown to project to the V and VII motor nuclei. Labeled cells were found in the inferior lobe and the glomerular complex of the thalamus. In the medulla oblongata, cells in the descending trigeminal nu

Temporal alterations of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide and its receptors in a rat model induced by recurrent chemical stimulations: Relevant to chronic migraine.

Background: Migraine is a common type of primary headache with disabling brain dysfunction. It has been found that pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is involved in the pathogenesis of migraine, however, the role of PACAP and its receptors in chronic migraine remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the changes of PACAP and its receptors in different duration after recurrent dural inflammation soup stimulations and to investigate the co-expression between PACAP and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Methods: Adult male rats were implanted with

Cochlear implantation in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by a deficit in the synthesis of type I collagen. Hearing loss affects 42-58% of OI patients and progresses to deafness in 35-60% of these patients. For OI patients, cochlear implantation (CI) is the only promising treatment option. However, literature on CI in patients with OI is relatively rare. After CI, speech perception is generally good. However, among patients with severe demineralization of the cochlea, most patients are reported to have complications of facial nerve stimulation (FNS), preventing some patients f

BDNF-restricted knockout mice as an animal model for aggression.

Mice with global deletion of one brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) allele or with forebrain-restricted deletion of both alleles show elevated aggression, but this phenotype is accompanied by other behavioral changes, including increases in anxiety and deficits in cognition. Here we performed behavioral characterization of conditional BDNF knockout mice generated using a Cre recombinase driver line, KA1-Cre, which expresses Cre in few areas of brain: highly at hippocampal area CA3 and moderately in dentate gyrus, cerebellum and facial nerve nucleus. The mutant animals exhibited elevated

Mutation of SHOC2 promotes aberrant protein N-myristoylation and causes Noonan-like syndrome with loose anagen hair.

N-myristoylation is a common form of co-translational protein fatty acylation resulting from the attachment of myristate to a required N-terminal glycine residue. We show that aberrantly acquired N-myristoylation of SHOC2, a leucine-rich repeat-containing protein that positively modulates RAS-MAPK signal flow, underlies a clinically distinctive condition of the neuro-cardio-facial-cutaneous disorders family. Twenty-five subjects with a relatively consistent phenotype previously termed Noonan-like syndrome with loose anagen hair (MIM607721) shared the 4A>G missense change in SHOC2 (producing an

Tremor induced by thalamic deep brain stimulation in patients with complex regional facial pain.

We report on two patients who developed a new postural and action tremor after chronic stimulation of the contralateral thalamus (VPM nucleus) during treatment of a complex regional facial pain syndrome. The tremor was only present during deep brain stimulation (DBS) and was suppressed with adjustment of the stimulation parameters. Tremor was seen only with low frequency stimulation (50 Hz or lower) and disappeared with higher stimulation frequencies. In addition to being an unusual side effect of thalamic DBS, we believe that this phenomenon affords insight into one possible mechanism underly

[Spastic paraplegia in Sjögren's syndrome associated with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD)--a case report].

A case of spastic paraplegia in Sjögren's syndrome associated with mixed connective tissue disease is reported. In this 49-year-old woman spastic gait and arthralgia developed at the age of 23 years and progressed chronically. On neurologic examination, supranuclear paresis of facial nerve was observed. Deep tendon reflexes were hyperactive in the jaw, upper and lower extremities. Serological tests showed that anti-nuclear, anti-RNP, and anti-SS-A antibodies were positive. Spinal fluid analysis showed that rate of de novo central nervous system (CNS) IgG synthesis was increased, and C3/C4 rati

Role of the superior salivatory nucleus in parasympathetic control of choroidal blood flow and in maintenance of retinal health.

The vasodilatory pterygopalatine ganglion (PPG) innervation of the choroid is under the control of preganglionic input from the superior salivatory nucleus (SSN), the parasympathetic portion of the facial motor nucleus. We sought to confirm that choroidal SSN drives a choroid-wide vasodilation and determine if such control is important for retinal health. To the former end, we found, using transscleral laser Doppler flowmetry, that electrical activation of choroidal SSN significantly increased choroidal blood flow (ChBF), at a variety of choroidal sites that included more posterior as well as

Delta-opioid receptor-immunoreactive neurons in the rat cranial sensory ganglia.

Immunohistochemistry for delta-opioid receptor (DOR) was performed on the rat cranial sensory ganglia. The immunoreactivity was detected in 16%, 19% and 11% of neurons in the trigeminal, jugular and petrosal ganglia, respectively. The nodose ganglion was devoid of such neurons. DOR-immunoreactive (IR) neurons were mostly small to medium-sized (trigeminal, range = 62-851 microm(2), mean +/- SD = 359 +/- 175 microm(2); jugular, range = 120-854 microm(2), mean +/- SD = 409 +/- 196 microm(2); petrosal, range = 167-1146 microm(2), mean +/- SD = 423 +/- 233 microm(2)). Antagonism for NPY signaling reverses cognitive behavior defects induced by activity-based anorexia in mice.

Patients with AN often express psychological symptoms such as body image distortion, cognitive biases, abnormal facial recognition, and deficits in working memory. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the impairment of cognitive behaviors in AN remain unknown. In the present study, we measured cognitive behavior using novel object recognition (NOR) tasks and mRNA expressions in hypothalamic neuropeptides in female C57BL/6J mice with activity-based anorexia (ABA). Additionally, we evaluated the effects of antagonists with intracerebroventricular (icv) administration on the impairment of

Subthalamotomy improves MPTP-induced parkinsonism in monkeys.

Hyperactivity of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is major characteristic of parkinsonism secondary to substantia nigra lesions. Interruption of the STN-internal pallidum (GPi) pathway is a new stereotactic target for Parkinson's disease. We have studied the antiparkinsonian efficacy of STN lesions in MPTP-treated monkeys. Four rhesus monkeys were made parkinsonian by MPTP (i.v. 0.15 +/- 1 mg/kg) administration over 3 months. Unilateral subthalamotomy (kainic acid) was performed by a standard stereotactic method. Severity was rated from 0 (normal) to V by fine manual motor tests. Three monkeys (s
