The Influence of Refractive Errors on Facial Expression Processing in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Eye-Tracking Study.

Facial expression processing is important for social understanding; among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refractive errors may reduce visual input, further hindering their ability to recognize and interpret faces. This study aimed to investigate the gaze patterns of children with ASD when viewing facial emotion expression pictures under refractive errors and compare these patterns with those of typically developing (TD) children. A total of 76 participants diagnosed with ASD and 73 TD children matched by age were included. All children underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examin

Effects of social context information on neural face processing in youth with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) in youth is associated with significant psychosocial impairments; however, the cognitive and neural mechanisms that maintain it, particularly during childhood and adolescence, remain underexplored. Cognitive models emphasize the role of altered face processing, and neutral facial expressions may be perceived as threatening. Due to their ambiguous nature, contextual cues may play a particularly important role in interpretation. METHODS: We presented neutral child faces paired with social context information varying in valence (negative, neutral, positi

Social cognition training improves recognition of individual emotions in schizophrenia disorder.

Impaired recognition of angry, fearful, and emotionless (i.e., neutral) faces is associated with poor social functioning among individuals with schizophrenia disorder (SZ). Limited research evaluates how interventions impact these impairments. Computerized social cognition training can improve overall facial emotion recognition in SZ, but it is unclear whether it improves the aforementioned impairments. We report results from a randomized controlled trial (Trial Registration: NCT02246426) evaluating how computerized social cognition training (SCT) impacts recognition of individual emotions in

Arousal and valence have dissociable effects on responses to schematic emotional faces.

Studies examining behavioural responses to emotional stimuli usually report one of two patterns of responses to negative stimuli. Some studies find faster responses to negative material. Other studies find slower responses to negative stimuli. While the attentional mechanisms proposed to explain these findings (attentional capture in the former case, delayed disengagement in the latter) are not at odds with one another, the behavioural findings do need to be reconciled. We posit that arousal, being the primary differentiator of threatening and nonthreatening stimuli, needs to be more carefully

Long-lasting effects of family-related factors on adults' ability to recognise brief facial expressions of emotion.

This study investigated whether adults' ability to attribute emotions to brief facial expressions (microexpressions) is associated with family-related environmental factors (FrFs) such as one's number of siblings (Experiment 1), attachment style (Experiment 2), or perceived parental authority style (Experiment 3). Participants' accuracy and reaction time (RT) to the recognition of anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, and sadness to facial microexpressions (exposure: 100 ms) were measured with a six-alternative forced choice computerised method (6AFC). The attachment style and the authori

Do Hypertensive Men Spy With an Angry Little Eye? Anger Recognition in Men With Essential Hypertension - Cross-sectional and Prospective Findings.

BACKGROUND: Higher trait anger has inconsistently been associated with hypertension and hypertension development, but social context in terms of recognition of other persons' anger has been neglected in this context. PURPOSE: Here, we investigated anger recognition of facial affect and trait anger in essential hypertensive and normotensive men in addition to prospective associations with blood pressure (BP) increases. METHODS: Baseline assessment comprised a total of 145 participants including 57 essential hypertensive and 65 normotensive men who were otherwise healthy and medication-free. S

From attentional blink to emotional dysregulation: a study on the cognitive and emotional interactions in depression.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate how negative emotional faces affect target identification in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) patients using an emotion-induced blindness (EIB) paradigm, and to compare their performance with that of non-clinical controls. METHODS: An EIB task was administered to 32 patients with MDD and 32 non-clinical controls recruited between March and December 2023. Target identification accuracy was assessed using facial expressions of disgust, fear, sadness, and neutrality as distractors presented at three different lags before the target: 100 ms, 300 ms, and

Implicit learning of social information in contextual cueing.

Human attention is often guided by contextual cues that signal where or how to focus in complex environments. Research on object contextual cueing has largely emphasized spatial regularities, but it remains unclear whether socially meaningful information can also provide such guidance. Across three experiments using face stimuli, we examined whether social cues can serve as contextual cues independently of spatial arrangements. In all experiments, participants searched for a target face among distractor faces, with spatial configurations fully randomized on every trial, and contextual informat

Age-dependent changes in the anger superiority effect: Evidence from a visual search task.

The perception of threatening facial expressions is a critical skill necessary for detecting the emotional states of others and responding appropriately. The anger superiority effect hypothesis suggests that individuals are better at processing and identifying angry faces compared with other nonthreatening facial expressions. In adults, the anger superiority effect is present even after controlling for the bottom-up visual saliency, and when ecologically valid stimuli are used. However, it is as yet unclear whether this effect is present in children. To fill this gap, we tested the anger super

The use of the Duchenne marker and symmetry of the expression in the judgment of smiles in schizophrenia.

Research has recurrently shown that individuals with schizophrenia have impairments in emotional facial recognition and this deficit has been associated with aberrant visual scanning of the face. Because human beings have the ability to control the expression of emotion, the communication process becomes more complex. The goal of the current study was to conduct a systematic examination of the response pattern and perceptual-attentional processing in distinguishing smiles with the presence and absence of the Duchenne marker and symmetry and asymmetry of the activation in individuals with schiz…

Angry-happy interpretations of ambiguous faces in social anxiety disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is characterized by a tendency to interpret ambiguous social cues as negative. Here we tested whether interpretation of ambiguous faces differs between participants with SAD and non-anxious controls. Twenty-seven individuals with SAD and 21 non-anxious control participants completed an emotion recognition task in which they judged ambiguous morphed faces as happy or angry. Participants with SAD judged a higher proportion of the faces as angry compared to non-anxious participants, and were slower to judge faces as angry compared to happy, while no such reaction tim

Attentional avoidance of fearful facial expressions following early life stress is associated with impaired social functioning.

BACKGROUND: Early life stress is associated with poorer social functioning. Attentional biases in response to threat-related cues, linked to both early experience and psychopathology, may explain this association. To date, however, no study has examined attentional biases to fearful facial expressions as a function of early life stress or examined these biases as a potential mediator of the relation between early life stress and social problems. METHODS: In a sample of 154 children (ages 9-13 years) we examined the associations among interpersonal early life stressors (i.e., birth through age

Temporal lobe epilepsy and emotion recognition without amygdala: a case study of Urbach-Wiethe disease and review of the literature.

We describe the epilepsy features and emotion recognition abilities (recognition of basic facial emotions and recognition of emotional prosody) in a patient with Urbach-Wiethe disease with bilateral amygdala calcifications. Our data, supported by ictal video-EEG recording, indicated that our patient suffered from mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Emotion recognition abilities were compared to those of healthy controls and those of patients with bilateral mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Our patient showed a selective impairment of the recognition of facial expression of fear, whereas recognition of

Memory for facial expressions in social phobia.

Memory biases toward threat have been documented in several anxiety disorders, but contradictory findings have recently been reported in social phobics' recognition of facial expressions. The present study examined recognition memory in clients with social phobia, in an effort to clarify previous inconsistent results. Just before giving a speech to a live audience, social phobia clients and normal controls viewed photographs of people with reassuring and threatening facial expressions. The stimuli were later presented again alongside photographs of the same person with a different facial expre

Children with facial paralysis due to Moebius syndrome exhibit reduced autonomic modulation during emotion processing.

BACKGROUND: Facial mimicry is crucial in the recognition of others' emotional state. Thus, the observation of others' facial expressions activates the same neural representation of that affective state in the observer, along with related autonomic and somatic responses. What happens, therefore, when someone cannot mimic others' facial expressions? METHODS: We investigated whether psychophysiological emotional responses to others' facial expressions were impaired in 13 children (9 years) with Moebius syndrome (MBS), an extremely rare neurological disorder (1/250,000 live births) characterized

An objective neural measure of the effect of wearing facemasks on single-glance human face identity recognition.

As highlighted during and since the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing facemasks significantly impacts human social interactions, notably by hindering facial recognition. Here we measured the reduction of single-glance facial identity recognition associated with wearing facemasks with an objective implicit approach. Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings were conducted in a group of participants presented with the same unfamiliar face identity photograph at a 6 Hz frequency, interrupted by different face identities every 5 stimuli. For faces wearing a mask, the neural face identity recognition respo…

The distinct effects of fearful and disgusting scenes on self-relevant face recognition.

Self-face recognition denotes the process by which a person can recognize their own face by distinguishing it from another's face. Although many research studies have explored the inhibition effect of negative information on self-relevant face processing, few researchers have examined whether negative scenes influence self-relevant face processing. Fearful and disgusting scenes are typical negative scenes, but little research to data has examined their discriminative effects on self-relevant face recognition. To investigate these issues, the current study explored the effect of negative scenes

Different neural representations for detection of symmetry in dot-patterns and in faces: A state-dependent TMS study.

The occipital face area (OFA) has been shown to code the presence of symmetry in faces and in vertically symmetric dot patterns. However, it is not clear whether symmetry processing of face and non-face stimuli involve overlapping neural mechanisms in OFA. This was assessed using state-dependent TMS by employing a priming paradigm. Specifically, we examined whether prior presentation of low-level symmetry affects the impact of TMS on discrimination of symmetry in subsequently presented faces - indicating that the same neural mechanisms encode symmetry in both face and non-face stimuli. Changes in face and face pareidolia processing in patients with migraine: an ERP study.

Migraine is a multifactorial brain disorder characterized by recurrent disabling headache attacks. One of the possible mechanisms in the pathogenesis of migraine may be a decrease in inhibitory cortical stimuli in the primary visual cortex attributable to cortical hyperexcitability. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural correlates underlying face and face pareidolia processing in terms of the event-related potential (ERP) components, N170, vertex positive potential (VPP), and N250, in patients with migraine. In total, 40 patients with migraine without aura, 23 patients with migra

Through the lens of schizophrenia: Recognizing negative facial expressions and family patterns.

Schizophrenia is a complex disorder with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and impaired social interactions, and deficits in facial emotion recognition are a key area of impairment. Studies indicate that recognizing facial emotions is essential for social interaction, and individuals with schizophrenia show significant difficulties, especially in recognizing negative emotions. Previous research has primarily focused on patients, with less attention on their first-degree relatives. This study investigates the ability to recognize negative facial expressions in paranoid and non-paranoi
