Family Members Experiences of Being Identified as a Family Caregiver to a Person Living With Dementia.

Globally, family members account for the main source of caregiving for people with dementia in ordinary housing. Providing informal care may have negative health consequences for relatives such as stress, reduced quality of life and depression. According to Swedish legislation, the social services should provide support to those who care for a relative who is elderly, has a long-term illness or a disability. However, it is not clear how family caregivers can be identified to be provided support. Identifying family caregivers is a challenge for social services and the healthcare system, especia…

Onlookers who don't see family-perpetrated elder financial abuse: concerned family members' perspectives of healthcare professionals.

Older adults who are financially exploited by family members routinely seek healthcare. Non-abusing concerned family members often accompany older adults to, or know of, their medical encounters. This qualitative study examined 28 family members' perspectives of encounters across healthcare settings at the time that older adults were being harmed in family financial exploitation. A descriptive analysis showed that across potential intervention opportunities, three providers (12%) intervened in exploitation directly; some intervened based on medical information (28%); and others did not interve…

Integrating social identity theory and family systems theory to explain how sociocultural norms become family life.

A persistent challenge in cultural family psychology is explaining how publicly circulating expectations about respectability, marriage, achievement, and filial duty become rules, resource conditions, and emotional climates within particular households. This theoretical and methodological article develops a bounded integration of Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Bowen's Family Systems Theory (FST). The model specifies four linked propositions: sociocultural norms acquire identity and reputational significance; family members with unequal authority and resources translate those stakes into dome…

[How family caregivers adapt to Lewy body disease - tracking family caregivers' perceptions of their caregiving relationships].

This one-year longitudinal study examined the relationship between caregivers' perceptions of their caregiving role and their psychological health when supporting individuals with Lewy body disease. The findings indicate that a lack of time and family support significantly affects caregivers' psychological health. Additionally, prioritizing emotion-focused coping strategies over problem-focused strategies is associated with a deterioration in psychological health over time. The study also identified distinct caregiver profiles based on variations in the financial consequences of caregiving, se…

Family criminal legal system exposure and early adolescents' pubertal development: the mediating role of family strain.

Pubertal trends, wherein adolescents today are experiencing puberty earlier than prior generations, have coincided with the expansion of the criminal legal system, which is disproportionately affecting communities of color. However, whether pubertal development and criminal legal system exposure among adolescents are interrelated is unknown. We tested whether family members' criminal legal system exposure predicted adolescents' pubertal development, whether family strain explained the relation between criminal legal system exposure and pubertal development, and whether race/ethnicity moderated…

Promoting family nurse resilience through Family Nurse Partnership education in Scotland: A continuous quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Family nurses delivering the Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) program in Scotland provide intensive, relationship-based care to young parents with complex trauma histories. This emotionally demanding work can contribute to moral distress, vicarious trauma, and burnout. Education that embeds trauma-informed pedagogical strategies may help mitigate these challenges and promote nurse resilience. OBJECTIVE: To explore family nurses' perspectives on how the FNP education program prepared them for practice and trauma-informed pedagogical practices contributed to learner engagement, emotio…

Longitudinal Linkages between Parental Overprotection and Children's Anxiety: Disentangling the Between-Family and Within-Family Effects.

Although reciprocal associations between changes in parental overprotection and children's anxiety are theoretically expected, there is a lack of empirical evidence on these linkages that tap into both between-family differences and within-family effects. This longitudinal multi-informant study examined reciprocal associations between parental overprotection and children's anxiety at the between- and within-family level, as well as explored whether these linkages differed by informant, parental role, and children's gender. A total of 471 children (55.2% for boys, Mage at T1 = 9.73, SD = 0.57),…

A study of stressors, family environment, coping patterns, and family burden in persons with dissociative disorder.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative disorder is a stress-related disorder usually present in adolescents and younger age groups. It is also accompanied by significant impairment in activity of daily living and family relations. Family environment and use of dysfunctional coping strategies play important roles in the initiation and maintenance of symptoms and this puts a considerable burden on the family. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to study the presence of stressors, the role of family environment, the role of family burden, and the use of coping mechanisms in persons with dissociative disorder. Multi-family therapy for bulimia nervosa: a qualitative pilot study of adolescent and family members' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Multi-family therapy (MFT-BN) is a new treatment for adolescent bulimia nervosa with emerging empirical support. It extends the bulimia nervosa focussed family therapy model, by offering treatment in a group setting. Up to nine families work together with a team of clinicians over the course of 20 weeks. No qualitative study to date has investigated the experience of MFT-BN. This study aimed to explore this from the adolescent and parent/caregiver perspective. METHODS: Participants from two consecutive MFT-BN groups facilitated at the Maudsley Hospital in London, UK, were invited …

Calculating variant penetrance from family history of disease and average family size in population-scale data.

BACKGROUND: Genetic penetrance is the probability of a phenotype when harbouring a particular pathogenic variant. Accurate penetrance estimates are important across biomedical fields including genetic counselling, disease research, and gene therapy. However, existing approaches for penetrance estimation require, for instance, large family pedigrees or availability of large databases of people affected and not affected by a disease. METHODS: We present a method for penetrance estimation in autosomal dominant phenotypes. It examines the distribution of a variant among people affected (cases) an…

Family-based treatment for transition age youth: the role of expressed emotion and general family functioning.

The aim of this study was to investigate changes in family functioning and parental expressed emotion (EE) in parents and transition age youth (18 to 25 years old) with Anorexia Nervosa participating in Family-Based Treatment for Transition Age Youth (FBT-TAY). Further, we examined whether perceived family functioning and EE were associated with changes in eating disorder behaviour and weight in participants at end-of-treatment and three months post-treatment. Generalized estimating equations revealed that changes in family functioning significantly improved from baseline to end-of-treatment (…

Chronic illness and family: impact of schizophrenia and Crohn's disease on the family quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life assessments are increasingly present in health research. Chronic and progressive illness of a family member unavoidably affects quality of life of a family as a whole. The goals of this study were to gain insight into the family burden of chronic disorders, especially possible differences in family quality of life (FQOL) in families that have members suffering from either schizophrenia or Crohn's disease, and families in which none of the members have chronic somatic or mental illness, as well as to pilot an instrument for this purpose. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The sa…

A hereditary disorder in the family and the family life cycle: Huntington disease as a paradigm.

The implications of predictive DNA-testing for Huntington's Disease (HD) for the transitions in the family life cycle are described. HD is a hereditary disorder leading to personality changes, uncontrollable movements, cognitive impairment, and ultimately death in mostly adults. People at risk have the possibility to detect whether or not they carry the disease provoking-gene, but no treatment is available. In this article, we will highlight the complex implications of pre-symptomatic testing by describing six different cases, interpreted by following the theoretical framework of Carter and Mc…

Alberta family integrated careTM: a review of a family-integrated care model in neonatal intensive care.

Alberta Family Integrated CareTM (AB-FICareTM) is a standardized, theory-driven model that integrates parents as primary caregivers in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs); however, its clinical effectiveness, implementation determinants, and cross-setting applicability require systematic synthesis. This narrative review aims to evaluate the evidence on AB-FICareTM in Level II NICUs, focusing on neonatal and parental outcomes, implementation barriers and facilitators, and transferability to healthcare systems with distinct organizational and cultural contexts. Following SANRA guidelines, we s…
