The extracellular antigens of Micropolyspora faeni: their significance in farmer's lung disease.

A serological analysis of the extracellular antigens of Micropolyspora faeni by immunodiffusion with a combination of sera revealed 29 individual antigens. A survey was made of the incidence of precipitins to the antigens in sera from patients with clinical farmer's lung disease (FLD) and other respiratory diseases. Precipitating antibody was found in 75% of farmer's lung cases and in 20% of other cases who had been exposed to the same environment. More precipitin reactions were seen in sera from severe forms of FLD than from milder forms. The distribution of precipitins to individual antigens

Immunofluorescence identification of Thermopolyspora polyspora, the causative agent of farmer's lung.

Farmer's lung is a serious disabling pulmonary disease found in agricultural workers. The disease is believed to be a hypersensitivity to the thermophilic actinomycetes, principally Thermopolyspora polyspora. This organism is difficult to stain with the usual bacteriological stains and thus far has not been demonstrated in the lung tissue by microscopic methods. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the fluorescent-antibody technique is a simple method for the positive identification of T. polyspora. The technique can also be used as a rapid screening test for the detection of antibodies to T

Self-reported Work-related Stress, Depressive Symptoms, and Health and Well-being Among Certified Organic Farmers: The Organic Farmer Safety, Health, and Life Study.

OBJECTIVE: Assess work-related stress and depressive symptoms among certified organic crop producers in the US Southwest. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey design with certified organic crop producers listed in the Organic Integrity Database using an electronic and paper version of the Organic Farmer Safety, Health, and Life Questionnaire. Analyses included descriptive statistics and multiple linear regressions to examine predictors of depressive symptoms and overall mental health. RESULTS: More than half of respondents reported moderate or high work-related stress. Depressive symptom score wa

Corneal Actinic Keratosis in an Elderly Farmer: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a premalignant epithelial lesion primarily associated with chronic ultraviolet exposure. While it commonly affects sun-exposed skin, its occurrence on the ocular surface is rare. Clinically, it may resemble ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN), necessitating histopathological confirmation for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old male, HBsAg positive, presented with progressive diminution of vision in the right eye for 6 months and a visible mass over the right eye for the past 2 months. Best-corrected visua

Development of an ELISA strategy for the serological diagnosis of farmer's lung disease.

CONTEXT: Farmer's lung disease (FLD) is a form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to regular exposure to microbial antigens present in moldy hay. Serological diagnosis is usually based on immunoprecipitation techniques using 1 to 12 in-house antigens. To improve standardization, recombinant antigens (r-Ags) have been produced from three etiological agents involved in FLD. AIM: The aim of this study was to develop a strategy using an ELISA test for the serological diagnosis of FLD. METHODS: The ELISA strategy was developed on an initial group of patients and then validated using sera from 29

A Case of V. vulnificus Infection in Non-Coastal Area's Farmer.

The infection of Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) can cause numerous clinical manifestations with high mortality. Aquatic products and sea water are typically the primary routes of infection. This article narrates a case of V. vulnificus infection in a farmer from an inland mountain area, who, unusually, contracted the infection through insect-borne transmission. The patient had a medical history of fatty liver disease and chronic alcohol consumption, which significantly increased the risk of V. vulnificus infection. He presented with swelling and pain in the lower left leg, along with scatte

An immunocompetent farmer with isolated cerebral alveolar echinococcosis: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis is a rare condition, but living or working in a rural environment is a substantial risk factor. The liver is the organ primarily affected, with additional extrahepatic manifestations in approximately 25% of cases. Primary extrahepatic disease is rare, and isolated cerebral involvement is extremely unusual. OBSERVATIONS: The authors described an illustrative case of isolated cerebral alveolar echinococcosis in an immunocompetent farmer. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a predominantly cystic lesion with perifocal edema and a "bunch of grapes" a

The prevalence and distribution of sheep scab in Wales: a farmer questionnaire survey.

Outbreaks of ovine psoroptic mange in the U.K. have increased 100-fold since its deregulation in 1992, with the highest prevalence in Wales, a region of high sheep density. A cross-sectional, retrospective, questionnaire-based survey of 7500 members of the association of Welsh lamb and beef farmers [Welsh Lamb and Beef Producers Ltd (WLBP)] was used to investigate the prevalence and distribution of sheep scab in this region in 2015. The survey was completed by 14.0% (n = 972) of potential respondents. Scab outbreaks were reported on 15.8% (n = 154) of farms in 2015. However, 29.0% (n = 282) of…
