A rare case of feline congenital Toxoplasma gondii infection: fatal outcome of systemic toxoplasmosis for the mother and its kitten.

This report describes a case of fatal systemic toxoplasmosis in a 2.5-year-old mixed breed pregnant cat and its kittens. The pregnant cat was presented to the gynecology clinic with symptoms of dystocia. The ultrasound examination revealed the presence of five fetuses in the uterus, three of which were not alive, and consequently a cesarean section was performed. However, the mother cat and the remaining two live kittens died two and ten days after cesarean section, respectively. Pathologically, severe alveolar edema, tachyzoite-like structures in the alveolar macrophages and multifocal necros

Forensic pathological evaluation of injury severity and fatal outcome in traffic accidents: five illustrative autopsy cases of clinically unexpected death.

In forensic casework, investigation of injury severity in traffic accidents is important for evaluating the mortality, occasionally in terms of the adequacy of clinical management. The present study evaluated 5 cases of clinically unexpected delayed collapse followed by death using the abbreviated injury scale (AIS), injury severity score (ISS), and a clinical trauma care method (trauma and injury severity score, TRISS). In these cases, major injury (AIS = 3-5) was found in the head, chest and/or abdomen at autopsy, and ISS was estimated to be 11-45 (serious to critical but not incompatible wi

Cocaine-Induced Toxic Leukoencephalopathy, Serotonin Syndrome, and Central Diabetes Insipidus Following Cocaine Overdose: A Case Report of a Fatal Outcome.

Cocaine use is associated with a broad spectrum of neurological and systemic complications. Toxic leukoencephalopathy is a rare but severe manifestation characterized by diffuse white matter injury. Serotonin syndrome is a toxidrome resulting from excessive serotonergic activity. Central diabetes insipidus has rarely been described in association with toxic leukoencephalopathy and may indicate extensive hypothalamic or neuroendocrine injury. We report a fatal case of a 44-year-old man presenting with toxic leukoencephalopathy, serotonin syndrome, and central diabetes insipidus following a mass

The potential contribution of deficiencies in handoffs between anaesthetists to the fatal outcome following ventral slot surgery in a dog.

Increasingly complex cases in veterinary anaesthesia challenge anaesthetists, especially when patient care is transferred (handed off) between team members. Standardized and structured patient handoffs are used in human medicine to improve patient safety. A male neutered Dachshund, aged 9 years, with a history of cervical pain presented for magnetic resonance imaging. The medical history included mitral valve insufficiency (grade B1) and intra-anaesthetic bradycardia and apnoea at a different clinic. Induction of anaesthesia was performed by a fourth year anaesthesia resident and the dog hande

Lactate dehydrogenase to albumin ratio (LAR) is a novel predictor of fatal outcome in patients with SFTS: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a serious infectious disease. This study explored the prognostic value of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) to albumin (ALB) ratio (LAR) levels in fatal outcomes of the disease. METHODS: Two-hundred and nine patients with SFTS were enrolled in this study. Based on the prognosis, patients were divided into survival and deceased groups. Laboratory metrics were compared by univariate Cox regression and multivariate Cox regression analyses. The prognostic risk factors for SFTS disease were discussed, and the receiver operator characteris…

Cell-free DNA increase over first 48 hours in emergency intensive care unit predicts fatal outcome in patients with shock.

Objective To investigate whether circulating cell-free (cf)-DNA levels are a useful biomarker for survival in patients with shock in the emergency intensive care unit (EICU). Methods This prospective observational study enrolled patients admitted to the EICU diagnosed with shock. Blood cf-DNA levels were analysed on admission, and after 24 and 48 h. As a measure of circulating cf-DNA, copy number of the β-globin gene in plasma was assessed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results Circulating cf-DNA levels were higher at hospital admission and after 24 h in EICU patients

Disseminated rhinovirus C8 infection with infectious virus in blood and fatal outcome in a child with repeated episodes of bronchiolitis.

We report a fatal case of acute lower respiratory tract disease with human rhinovirus C (HRV-C) as the unique cause in a 19-month-old girl with a history of repeated episodes of bronchiolitis. HRV-C type 8 nucleic acids were observed in respiratory, stool, and cerebrospinal fluid samples, and infectious virions were isolated from patient serum after inoculation onto reconstituted airway epithelia.

Qualitative differences in brain-infiltrating T cells are associated with a fatal outcome in mice infected with Japanese encephalitis virus.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is the most important form of viral encephalitis in Asia. The critical factors determining mortality and severity of JE virus (JEV) infection remain unclear. We identified brain-infiltrating T cells associated with a fatal outcome of JEV infection in mice. Dying mice were defined as those that lost more than 25 % of their body weight by day 13 and died by day 21, while surviving mice were defined as those that lost less than 10 % by day 13, based on the result of the survival time course study. Two groups of five mice that demonstrated brain virus titers of >1 × 10(6…

Fatal outcome after insufficient spine fixation for pyogenic thoracic spondylodiscitis: an imperative for 360 degrees fusion of the infected spine.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic spondylodiscitis represents a potentially life-threatening condition. Due to the low incidence, evidence-based surgical recommendations in the literature are equivocal, and the treatment modalities remain controversial. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59 year-old patient presented with a history of thoracic spondylodiscitis resistant to antibiotic treatment for 6 weeks, progressive severe back pain, and a new onset of bilateral lower extremity weakness. Clinically, the patient showed a deteriorating spastic paraparesis of her lower extremities. An emergent MRI revealed a kyphotic we

Albumin mRNA in peripheral white blood cells of cirrhotic patients with a superimposed alcoholic hepatitis is associated to fatal outcome.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP), relative viscosity (eta) and overall outcome … t populations studied. Most of the LC+AH patients positive to peripheral ALB expression (87%) had a fatal outcome, compared to survivors (25%). Such difference was not observed with the conventional liver function tests or Maddrey's discriminant function.

Total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage associated with fatal outcome in infancy and early childhood: an autopsy study of 52 cases.

Clinicopathological details of 52 cases of total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (TAPVD) taken from pediatric autopsy files from hospitals in Adelaide (Australia) Oxford and Edinburgh (United Kingdom) between 1957 and 1990 are presented. The patients ranged in age from a stillborn girl to a 15-month-old boy, with 42 cases (81%) dying in the first 3 months of life. While many patients had signs of a congenital cardiovascular anomaly prior to death, including tachypnea, tachycardia, central cyanosis, cardiac failure, heart murmurs, and difficulty in feeding, it was noteworthy that eight pati

Case report end-stage cystic fibrosis with fatal outcome in two siblings from a Chinese family: a 15-year diagnostic odyssey.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) remains severely underdiagnosed in China due to the absence of newborn screening, limited sweat chloride testing capacity, and low clinical awareness. Diagnostic delay results in irreversible lung damage and precludes timely genotype-directed therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old Chinese boy presented with end-stage CF lung disease after a 15-year diagnostic odyssey. He had recurrent lower respiratory tract infections since infancy, progressive bronchiectasis, CF-associated liver disease with portal hypertension, and chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa/Burkhold

Fatal Outcome After Reduction of a Superior Shoulder Dislocation, A Case Report and Literature Review: A Case Report and Literature Review.

CASE: An 81-year-old woman presented a superior glenohumeral dislocation after a low-energy fall, with a mechanism of axial load while the shoulder was in adduction and extension. After successful closed reduction, the patient presented sudden symptoms of severe vascular injury with a protruding axillary hematoma and hypovolemic shock. CONCLUSION: Superior shoulder dislocations and vascular injuries are extremely rare among shoulder dislocations, especially after low-energy trauma. Vascular injuries may result in limb compromise and death. We highlight the importance of high clinical suspicio

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: case report of a newborn with rare PKHD1 mutation, rapid renal enlargement and early fatal outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD; MIM#263200) is one of the most frequent pediatric renal cystic diseases, with an incidence of 1:20,000. It is caused by mutations of the PKHD1 gene, on chromosome 6p12. The clinical spectrum is highly variable, ranging from late-onset milder forms to severe perinatal manifestations. The management of newborns with severe pulmonary insufficiency is challenging, and causes of early death are sepsis or respiratory failure. In cases of massive renal enlargement, early bilateral nephrectomy and peritoneal dialysis may reduce infant
