A Group Parenting Intervention for Male Postpartum Depression: A Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Male postpartum depression is prevalent across populations; however, there is limited evidence on strategies to address it, particularly in low-income settings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Learning Through Play Plus Dads (LTP + Dads), a nonspecialist-delivered psychosocial intervention, in improving symptoms of male postpartum depression compared to treatment as usual. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cluster randomized clinical trial was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan, between June 2018 and November 2019. Assessors were blind to treatment allocation. Parti

Perceived parental rejection mediates the effects of previous maltreatment on emotional and behavioural outcomes in Chinese adolescents whereas mental illness has no moderating effect.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the mediating role of perceived parental rejection in the relationship between childhood maltreatment experience and behavioural problems in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A total of 2484 adolescents (1305 males and 1179 females; aged 12-16 years) from Hunan Province, China, participated in the study. Behavioural problems, parental rejection scores and child abuse experiences were evaluated by the Child Behavior Checklist (parental version), the Memories of Parental Rearing Behavior Scale and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, separately. Mediating effects were

Interpersonal relationships and child-rearing practices in 214 parents of battered children.

The self-reported child-rearing practices of 214 parents of battered babies were characterized in a few but not all respects by demanding behaviour which exceeded that to be expected in relation to their social class and age. Inconsistency in child management was noted in the comparison between lack of demonstrativeness and emotional over-involvement, and between physical punishment and a tendency to be lax in the supervision of the child, and was reminiscent of parents of delinquents. Unhappiness and hostility in relationships with members of their families of origin, with unsupporting partne

The Effects of Father-Perpetration of Maltreatment on Adolescent Health Risk.

Maltreatment perpetrated by fathers may entail distinct characteristics and threats, and therefore differing effects from maltreatment perpetrated by mothers alone. This study examines the extent to which father perpetration of maltreatment is associated with variability in subsequent adolescent health outcomes relative to mother-alone maltreatment. A sample of youth (N = 377) with recently completed Child Protective Services investigations concerning reports of maltreatment attributed to fathers and/or mothers was drawn from the second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being. Youth

[Prenatal diagnosis of upper limb malformations].

Three children with thrombopenia and radial aplasia were examined at the Centre de Génétique Médicale of Marsielles from 1974 to 1976. In each case the genetic basis of the anomaly was discussed with the family at genetic counseling underlining the high risk of recurrence related to the autosomal recessive transmission. Each proband was the only child of the couple. In the first case the father and mother, each having one child from a previous marriage, decided to have no more children. In the second case, the use of fetoscopy and its limitations were discussed as another pregnancy was desired

Chromosomal disorder and neoplastic diseases in a family with inherited fragile 16. Causality or casualty?

We describe a family with an inherited fragile chromosome 16 with the concurrence of a constitutional chromosome abnormality, together with neoplastic pathology within the family. The following findings should be pointed out: in relation to the constitutional chromosome pathology, of the proband's 3 children, the eldest daughter was a carrier of the fragile 16, the same as the father, and the second child, a son, had Down syndrome (trisomy 21). Regarding the tumoral pathology of this family, one of the proband's daughters died in childhood from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, whereas the proband

Executive functions in adolescents with spina bifida: relations with autonomy development and parental intrusiveness.

The current study was part of a larger longitudinal investigation and examined the relation of parent-report and performance measures of executive functioning (EF) with measures of behavioral and emotional autonomy and parental intrusiveness in adolescents with and without spina bifida (SB; n=65 in a comparison sample and 61 in an SB sample; M age=14.55, SD=0.63). For both groups, higher levels of parent-reported EF problems predicted higher levels of observed child dependency and lower levels of teacher-reported intrinsic motivation. Higher scores on performance EF measures predicted lower le

Parental Overprotection and Locus of Control as the Mechanisms Explaining the Relationship Between Parent and Child Anxiety: A Multiple Mediation Model.

The study probes the role played by parenting control practices and parental locus of control in the relationship between parent and child anxiety. The study particularly aims at probing these matters in light of the parental gender-specific role, striving to improve our understanding of the differential etiological contribution of mothers' and fathers' anxiety and parental practices to child's anxiety. The study consisted of 316 parents (159 mothers and 157 fathers) who reported their own and their child's anxiety using valid instruments. The general path model used in the study exhibited an

Psycho-Social Effects of Father-Daughter Incest: Views of South African Social Workers.

Father-daughter incest (FDI) is one of the most prohibited sexual acts and is increasingly becoming a widespread problem in South Africa. Specifically, the study explored factors contributing to incest, how incidences of incest become known, different ways that incest affects the offender, the victim and the family as well as how professionals intervene in incest cases. The literature was reviewed to fully understand incest within the Western and African context, the relationship of father-daughter in the incest act, what influences the occurrence of father-daughter incest and what measures ar

Transsexualism and Slater's Selective Vocabulary Test.

It has been shown elsewhere that transsexual males use a vocabulary which differs from that of normal males. This could be demonstrated by Slater's Selective Vocabulary Test. This test was administered to 56 male transsexuals and the 'd' score - a device to eliminate the influence of I.Q. - was calculated. The normal d score for males is zero and the higher the score the greater is the degree of femininity. An attempt was made to find factors which facilitate this abnormal development of the vocabulary in male transsexuals. In order to do this the cases were divided into a group of high and a

Parents' school-related concerns and perceived strengths in youth with spina bifida.

BACKGROUND: Although the academic difficulties of children with spina bifida (SB) are well-documented, there is limited literature on parents' views of their children's school experiences and school-related supportive services. Thus, the current study examined parents' school-related concerns, as well as perceived areas of strength, among children with SB. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods approach, 30 families (29 mothers and 19 fathers) of children with SB (ages 8-15 years) completed questionnaires and interviews. Content analysis was used to generate themes from interview data about parents'

Children's responses to mother-infant and father-infant interaction with a baby sibling: jealousy or joy?

Firstborn children's reactions to mother-infant and father-infant interaction after a sibling's birth were examined in an investigation of 224 families. Triadic observations of parent-infant-sibling interaction were conducted at 1 month after the birth. Parents reported on children's problem behaviors at 1 and 4 months after the birth and completed the Attachment Q-sort before the birth. Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified 4 latent classes (behavioral profiles) for mother-infant and father-infant interactions: regulated-exploration, disruptive-dysregulated, approach-avoidant, and anxious-

"Am I Doing the Right Thing?": Pathways to Parenting a Gender Variant Child.

Gender variant (GV) children have a subjective sense of gender identity and/or preferences regarding clothing, activities, and/or playmates that are different from what is culturally normative for their biological sex. Despite increases in rates of GV children and their families presenting at clinics, there is little research on how raising a GV child affects the family as a whole or how families make decisions regarding their care. This study took an ecological-transactional framework to explore the question, "what is the experience of parents who raise a GV or transgender child?" Eight mothe

Gender, affiliation, assertion, and the interactive context of parent-child play.

Ninety-eight young U.S. children (mean age = 48 months) with either European, Latin American, or multiple ethnic backgrounds were videotaped with their mothers and their fathers on separate occasions in their families' homes. Parent-child pairs played for 8 min each with a feminine-stereotyped toy set (foods and plates) and a masculine-stereotyped toy set (track and cars). Levels of affiliation (engaging vs. distancing) and assertion (direct vs. nondirect) were rated on 7-point scales every 5 s from the videotapes for both parent and child. Overall, the play activity accounted for a large prop

The childhood and family dynamics of transvestites.

This article reports a survey of childhood experiences and family dynamics reported by a sample of 85 cross-dressing males drawn from the readership of a magazine for transvestites. The sample had a higher percentage of only children and eldest children compared to a national sample and also a much closer relationship with their mothers than with their fathers. Their identification as nuclear or marginal transvestites or transsexuals is related to the quality of the reported relationship with the mother, to the factors they identify as associated with their cross-dressing, and to their sexual

Determinants of Parental Emotion Socialization Behaviors: Insights From a Large-Scale Population-Based Family Study.

Parental emotion socialization behaviors (ESBs) are essential for child development and are typically understood as influenced by factors related to three domains: the parent, the child, and the family context. However, it remains unclear how parents' childhood experiences with ESBs should be represented within these conceptual frameworks. Addressing the complexity of ESBs, the present study examined predictors across three theoretically derived domains and additionally included parents' recollected ESBs as a parent-level factor. Questionnaire data were collected from a large population-based

Mendelian randomization analysis of maternal coffee consumption during pregnancy on offspring neurodevelopmental difficulties in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa).

BACKGROUND: Previous observational epidemiological studies have suggested that coffee consumption during pregnancy may affect fetal neurodevelopment. However, results are inconsistent and may represent correlational rather than causal relationships. The present study investigated whether maternal coffee consumption was observationally associated and causally related to offspring childhood neurodevelopmental difficulties (NDs) in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study. METHODS: The observational relationships between maternal/paternal coffee consumption (before and during pregnanc
