[A public health view of seamen's wives. Role of the mother during the father's absence].

The health status of 59 wives of seamen during their absence from home being on board a ship was evaluated by THI (Tokyo University Health Inventory). There was no evidence that the absence of their husbands had any undesirable effects on their health, but those who received fewer telephone calls from their absent husbands complained more frequently of subjective symptoms related to mental problems. The same tendency was observed in those who sought advice from their neighbors and others at times of trouble with their children. A qualitative analysis of communication between the wives of seame

Understanding parenting stress in autism spectrum disorder: a cross-sectional study exploring differences between mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: Parents of autistic children may experience high levels of stress. Prior research implicates child cognitive impairment, emotional and behavioral problems, sociodemographic factors, and autism symptoms as contributors; however, gender differences in parenting stress remain underexplored. This study compared parenting stress between mothers and fathers of autistic children and examined key predictors across stress domains. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a database including data from 160 mother-father pairs of children aged 3-15 years who had received an ASD diagnosis. Parent…

Identifying Community-Sourced Implementation Strategies for Delivering a Task-Shared Mental Health Intervention for Fathers in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: To design accessible interventions, understanding how best to implement them in context is essential. Strategies that reflect community perspectives may be most relevant and impactful. This study aimed to identify and specify community-sourced implementation strategies for delivering a mental health and alcohol use intervention for fathers in Kenya and to map them to the Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) taxonomy. METHOD: In Eldoret, Kenya, focus groups (seven groups; 31 participants) and key informant interviews (n = 18) were conducted with hospital leaders, p…

Dyadic associations between multiple screen addiction and postpartum depression: A couple-based study of mothers and fathers.

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects both parents, yet its association with multiple screen addiction (MSA) remains under-researched, particularly within family systems. To address this gap using a couple-based perspective, this study evaluated the relationship between PPD and MSA in 83 mother-father dyads recruited from a primary care setting in Türkiye. Participants completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Multiple Screen Addiction Scale (MSAS). Results indicated that mothers had higher PPD scores, while fathers exhibited higher MSA levels. Significant positive correlations …

Parental burnout among military fathers: The moderating roles of unit support, marital satisfaction, and emotional regulation strategies.

OBJECTIVE: The military family stress model (Gewirtz et al., 2018) was used to examine the associations between deployment experiences, interpersonal relationships, and four aspects of parental burnout-emotional exhaustion, contrast in parental self, fed-up feelings, and emotional distancing from the child-among military fathers. The study focused on testing main and moderating effects for these variables. METHOD: A total of 105 Israeli military fathers deployed to combat zones completed self-report questionnaires on deployment exposure, emotion regulation, unit and spousal support, and paren…

Knowledge of Exclusive Breastfeeding and Associated Factors Among Fathers of Infants Under 1 year in Northeast Ethiopia.

Exclusive breastfeeding is defined as a condition in which the child takes only breast milk and no additional food, water, or other liquids for the first 6 months of its life. Even though many contributing factors are present for this problem, fathers' knowledge about breastfeeding is a vital and neglected part. A baby has a higher chance of being breastfed if the father has more knowledge regarding exclusive breastfeeding. This study aims to assess knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding and associated factors among fathers of infants aged under 1 year in Northeast Ethiopia, 2023. A community-ba…

Validating the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 in Community Mothers and Fathers Across the Infant's First Year.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effects of different types of parental health status on child development and health, valid parental distress measurement instruments are needed. The aim was to assess the psychometric measurement properties of the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) used during the postnatal year in community samples of Swedish mothers and fathers. METHODS: Data were collected at postnatal months 1, 6 and 12 from 66 mothers (mean age 31 years) and 58 fathers (mean age 32 years). Psychometric measurement properties were assessed with interitem analysis and intra-i…

Perinatal Intervention Desires of New Fathers Who Have a History of Child Maltreatment: A Mixed Methods Study.

A history of child maltreatment (CM) can lead to poorer perinatal mental health and early parenting outcomes. New fathers who experienced CM may have unique needs that could be addressed with trauma-specific fatherhood programs. This sequential mixed-methods study compares the intervention desires of fathers with and without a history of CM, explores trauma-specific considerations for intervention development, and identifies barriers to participating in perinatal fatherhood programs. We surveyed 371 first-time fathers of young children (birth - 30 months) online. One third (33%, n = 123) had a…

How fathers and mothers make their children laugh: Associations with the security of parent-child attachment relationships.

OBJECTIVES: Bowlby (1969/1982) described an infant's smile and pleasant vocalizations as attachment behaviors. However, most research on the formation of attachment relationships centers on the role of the caregiver's response to child distress, neglecting the role of behaviors that promote proximity in a positive context. This study aimed to 1) explore fathers' and mothers' laughter-eliciting behaviors and children's laughter using a newly developed coding instrument and 2) explore associations between these behaviors, children's laughter, and child attachment security. DESIGN: A sample of 1…

Longitudinal Associations Between Support and Prosocial Behavior Across Adolescence: The Roles of Fathers, Mothers, Siblings, and Friends.

Family members and friends can play an important role in adolescents' prosocial behavior. To better understand the relation between support and prosocial behavior in adolescence, it's important to conduct longitudinal studies that distinguish between within-dyad variance and between-dyad variance. The current study investigated longitudinal associations between adolescents' prosocial behavior, autonomy support, and emotional support from family and friends across adolescence. Across six annual years, 497 Dutch adolescents (284 boys; mean age T1 = 13.03 years, SDage = 0.46), fathers, mothers, s…

Factors associated with behavioral adjustment among school-age children of gay and heterosexual single fathers through surrogacy.

Thirty-one children of gay single fathers and 28 children of heterosexual single fathers, all born through surrogacy, were compared with 31 children of gay partnered fathers through surrogacy and 30 children of heterosexual partnered fathers through in-vitro fertilization on their perceptions of self-worth and their father- and caregiver-reported internalizing and externalizing behaviors. For children of single fathers, the study also examined associations between aspects related to their surrogacy conception, feelings about their family arrangement, and behavioral adjustment. All children (47…

Parenting practices, aggressive response evaluation and decision, and social difficulties in kindergarten children: The role of fathers.

The association between fathers' parenting characteristics and their preschool children's social information processing (SIP) patterns is an understudied research topic. Hence, the current study aims to bridge this gap by examining whether there are differences between mothers' and fathers' parenting characteristics and their children's SIP patterns as well as their social functioning in school, with a specific focus on children's aggressive response evaluation and decision (RED) and social difficulties in kindergarten. Using a multimethod (self-reports and direct assessments) multi-informant …

Be quiet and man up: a qualitative questionnaire study into fathers who witnessed their Partner's birth trauma.

BACKGROUND: Research focusing on paternal mental health is limited, especially regarding the impact of the experience of poor mental health in the perinatal period. For example, little is known about the experiences of fathers who witness their partner's traumatic birth and the subsequent impact on their mental health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore fathers' experiences of witnessing a traumatic birth, how these experiences impacted their wellbeing, and what support they received during and following the traumatic birth. METHODS: Sixty-one fathers were recruited via targeted …

Birth location preferences of mothers and fathers in rural Ghana: Implications for pregnancy, labor and birth outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Maternal deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa are largely preventable with health facility delivery assisted by skilled birth attendants. Examining associations of birth location preferences on pregnant women's experiences is important to understanding delays in care seeking in the event of complications. We explored the influence of birth location preference on women's pregnancy, labor and birth outcomes. METHODS: A qualitative study conducted in rural Ghana consisted of birth narratives of mothers (n = 20) who experienced pregnancy/labor complications, and fathers (n = 18) whose partner…

Different, difficult or distinct? Mothers' and fathers' perceptions of temperament in children with and without intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Can ratings of temperament be a way of identifying young children with intellectual disabilities (ID) who are at risk for being experienced as difficult? We aimed to explore parents' reports of temperament in their young children with or without ID, as well as positive and negative impact of the child on parents. METHOD: Mothers and fathers of 55 children recently diagnosed with ID and 183 age-matched typically developing (TD) children completed the EASI Temperamental Survey and two scales of the Family Impact Questionnaire measuring positive and negative impact of the child on pa…

Intranasal oxytocin increases fathers' observed responsiveness during play with their children: a double-blind within-subject experiment.

Recent correlational studies showed that oxytocin is associated with parenting style in humans as in other mammals. Here the first double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject experiment with intranasal oxytocin administration is presented. Subjects were 17 fathers with their toddler, observed in two play sessions of 15 min each with an intervening period of 1 week. In the oxytocin condition fathers were more stimulating of their child's exploration than in the placebo condition, and they tended to show less hostility. Parent training experiments might be combined with intranasal oxytocin …

A pilot study of factors associated with resilience to substance abuse in adolescent sons of alcoholic fathers.

This pilot study evaluated the association between substance abuse outcome and putative protective factors in sons of alcoholic fathers. A battery of questionnaires was anonymously self-administered to 24 sons of alcoholic fathers ages 16-19 years to identify relationships between alcohol and/or drug abuse and factors hypothesized to be related to parental alcoholism. Of the 24 subjects, 13 were categorized through self-identification and self-report screening measures as having alcohol and/or drug problems and 11 were categorized as not having substance abuse problems. Boys without substance …
