Satiety differentially modulates feeding steps in the jellyfish Cladonema.

Following a meal, animals exhibit satiety, a state of decreased motivation to feed. Satiety is observed throughout the animal kingdom, suggesting ancient underlying mechanisms. Here, we investigate how satiety alters feeding in jellyfish, species that lack a centralized brain. Using comprehensive ethological analyses in Cladonema, a jellyfish with highly stereotyped, sequential feeding behavior, we show that satiety disorganizes its feeding sequence and delays all feeding steps, thus reducing food consumption. Surprisingly, isolated tentacles from fed jellyfish displayed satiety, thereby showi…

Ingestive behavior of lambs fed diets containing castor seed meal.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the substitution of soybean meal for castor seed meal (CSM) in diets for feedlot lambs and the effects of these diets on their ingestive behavior. Fifty male Santa Inês lambs were used. The diets were composed of Tifton 85 hay and a concentrate containing detoxified CSM substituting 0, 25, 50, 75, or 100 % of the soybean meal. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of the CSM levels on the feeding, rumination, idle times, chews and time spent chewing per bolus, total chewing time, number of boli chewed, and number of chews per day. The dry matter (DM) intake

Electropenetrography with Alternating Current Reveals In Situ Changes of Aedes aegypti Probing Behaviors Associated with Dengue Virus Infection.

Human infection with dengue virus (DENV) results in significant morbidity and mortality around the world. Current methods to investigate virus-associated changes in insect feeding behaviors are largely restricted to video analysis of feeding events outside of the host or intravital microscopy. Electropenetrography, a method originally developed for plant-feeding insects, offers a promising alternative by allowing high-resolution recording of voltage changes across the insect bite interface. We compared recordings from DENV-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes feeding on uninfected mice and uninfe…

Quantitative Trait Locus Determining the Time of Blood Feeding in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes and other blood feeding arthropods are vectors of pathogens causing serious human diseases, such as Plasmodium spp. (malaria), Wu … ive trait locus (QTL) analysis using two strains of Culex pipiens sensu lato with contrasting blood feeding behaviors, wherein the lab adapted Shasta strain blood feeds at any time of the day or night, while the newly established Trinidad strain feeds only at night. We identified a single locus on chromosome 2 associated with the observed variation in feeding time …

Orthorexia Nervosa: over concern or obsession about healthy food?

PURPOSE: Orthorexia Nervosa is characterized by specific behaviors frequently related to other psychopathological conditions, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Eating Disorders (EDs). Whereas ON can mainly be described as an excessive concern regarding healthy food, the study's principal aim was to investigate if ON could be considered a condition related and differentiated from worry, other than OCD, EDs, perfectionism, anxiety, and depression. METHOD: To achieve these aims, 302 individuals from the general population were enrolled and were divided into two groups named "High E

Are Eccentric Eating Habits Eating Disorders?

BACKGROUND: The study deals with particular kinds of eating habits that are unusual, not focused on weight, different from eating disorders, and not pathological. They are characterized by features such as the kind, amount, manner and style of eating that deviate from the common ones in their family or culture. They would be included today under the DSM- 5 categories of Avoidant restricting food intake disorder (AR-FID), and unspecified feeding or eating disorders (USFED). The question was whether they are mild forms of eating disorders or an independent set of behaviors. The objective was to

Early life stress induced by maternal separation during lactation alters the eating behavior and serotonin system in middle-aged rat female offspring.

Stressful events occurring during early life have been related to behavioral and neurochemical disturbances. Maternal separation during the first two weeks of life is a traumatic event that strongly affects the feeding behavior and serotonergic system of the progeny in adulthood. As this system modulates the feeding behavior, the present study aimed at investigating the effects of maternal separation-induced stress on both the feeding behavior and serotonergic system of the middle-aged female rats by manipulating this system using fluoxetine, a selective serotonin transporter inhibitor. Lactat…

Avian phenotypic traits related to feeding preferences in two Culex mosquitoes.

Host choice by mosquitoes affects the transmission dynamics of vector-borne infectious diseases. Although asymmetries in mosquito attraction to vertebrate species have been reported, the relative importance of host characteristics in mosquito blood-feeding behavior is still poorly studied. Here, we investigate the relationship between avian phenotypic traits-in particular, morphometry, plumage coloration, and nesting and roosting behavior-and the blood-feeding patterns in two common Culex mosquito species on a North American avian community. Forage ratios of the mosquito species were unrelated…

Recognition and Management of Feeding Dysfunction in the Pediatric Patient with Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Feeding is a complex skill requiring coordination of multiple body systems. Multiple factors are considered in feeding dysfunction in pediatric patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, including overall development, nutritional status, mealtime behaviors, and medical comorbidities. Symptoms of feeding dysfunction vary by age, with maladaptive learned feeding behaviors spanning all age ranges. Knowledge of the normal acquisition of feeding skills is critical to interpret the impact of the disease and plan appropriate intervention. Assessment and treatment from a feeding and swallo…

Coordination of feeding, locomotor and visual systems in parrotfishes (Teleostei: Labridae).

Fishes require complex coordinated motions of the jaws, body and fins during feeding in order to successfully execute the strike or bite and then move away from the predation site. In conjunction with locomotor systems, sensory modalities guide coordinated feeding behavior, with vision playing an important role in many fishes. Although often studied separately, the locomotor, feeding and visual systems have not previously been examined together during fish feeding. To explore feeding coordination, we examined the kinematics of feeding behavior in two species of herbivorous parrotfish, Sparisom…

Convergent mechanisms, divergent strategies: a comparison of nectar intake between a generalist and a specialist bat species.

Nectar-feeding bats exhibit a range of specialized adaptations that allow them to extract nectar from flowers efficiently. These adaptations include tongue morphological traits and feeding strategies that reflect varying degrees of specialization to nectarivory. While some aspects of the drinking mechanics of highly specialized nectar bats have been studied, little is known about the feeding behaviors of non-specialized species such as Phyllostomus discolor. This study compares the nectar extraction behaviors of P. discolor and the specialized Anoura geoffroyi, examining morphological and biom…

Oxytocin (OT) is a neurohormone that regulates the so-called "social brain" and is mainly studied in adulthood. During postnatal development … ly postnatal life, OT plays a key role in stimulating the maturation of neural networks controlling feeding behavior and early social interactions from birth. Administration of OT at birth improves sensory integration of environmental factors and the relationship with the mother as well as sucking activity as we have shown in mouse models and in babies with Prader …

The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway is Expressed in the Adult Mouse Hypothalamus and Modulated by Fasting.

The hedgehog signaling pathway is best known for its role in developmental patterning of the neural tube and limb bud. More recently, hedgeh … hedgehog signaling such as hyperphagia-associated obesity. How hedgehog signaling may contribute to feeding behavior is complex and unclear, but cilia are critical for proper energy homeostasis. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of the expression of core components of the hedgehog signaling pathway in the adult mouse hypothalamus with an emphasis on feeding cen …

Feeding and swallowing dysfunction in genetic syndromes.

Children with genetic syndromes frequently have feeding problems and swallowing dysfunction as a result of the complex interactions between anatomical, medical, physiological, and behavioral factors. Feeding problems associated with genetic disorders may also cause feeding to be unpleasant, negative, or even painful because of choking, coughing, gagging, fatigue, or emesis, resulting in the child to stop eating and to develop behaviors that make it difficult, if not impossible, for a parent to feed their child. In addition, limited experiences with oral intake related to the medical or physica

Intraduodenal infusions of fats elicit satiety in sham-feeding rats.

The satiating effect of duodenally administered fats was investigated with intraduodenal infusions of Intralipid in sham-feeding rats. Intralipid rapidly inhibited sham feeding and elicited the behavioral sequence of satiety. The satiating potency of Intralipid infusions in concentrations of 0.125-1 kcal/ml was a function of the concentration infused. The time course for Intralipid-induced satiety showed that fats inhibited feeding and led to the behavioral sequence of satiety within 15 min after the infusions began. This time course is evidence for a preabsorptive site of action to the small

Effects of different milk allowances on the behavior and liveweight of Holstein-Friesian bull calves.

Dairy calves reared for beef are commonly fed restricted milk allowances preweaning, which may negatively influence their welfare and growth. We investigated the effects of 2 milk allowances on the behavior and liveweight of 22 Holstein-Friesian bull calves in a pasture-based system. Calves were managed indoors in 1 group and individually offered 5 or 10 L of milk/d via an automatic milk feeder until 5 wk of age (n = 11 calves/treatment) when they were transferred onto pasture. Behavior (at meal, milk, hay and bentonite feeders, ruminating, exploring, drinking, lying, grooming, play running an

Bridging cognitive, phenomenological and psychodynamic approaches to eating disorders.

Cognitive, psychodynamic, and phenomenological scholars converged their attention on abnormal bodily phenomena as the core psychopathological feature of eating disorders (EDs). While cognitive approaches focus their attention on a need for "objective" (i.e., observable, measurable) variables (including behaviours and distorted cognitions), the phenomenological exploration typically targets descriptions of persons' lived experience. According to a new emerging phenomenological perspective, the classic behavioural and cognitive symptoms of EDs should be considered as epiphenomena of a deeper cor

Functional organization and adaptability of a decision-making network in aplysia.

Whereas major insights into the neuronal basis of adaptive behavior have been gained from the study of automatic behaviors, including reflexive and rhythmic motor acts, the neural substrates for goal-directed behaviors in which decision-making about action selection and initiation are crucial, remain poorly understood. However, the mollusk Aplysia is proving to be increasingly relevant to redressing this issue. The functional properties of the central circuits that govern this animal's goal-directed feeding behavior and particularly the neural processes underlying the selection and initiation …

Cannulation of the mouse submandibular salivary gland via the Wharton's duct.

BACKGROUND: Daily rhythmicity has been observed for a number of hormonal and behavioral variables in mammals. It can be entrained by several external factors, such as light-dark cycle and scheduled feeding. In dromedary camels, daily rhythmicity has been documented only for melatonin secretion and body temperature. In this study, the daily rhythmicity of behavioral repertoire, cortisol and testosterone levels was investigated in captive male camels. METHODS: Six clinically healthy male dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) were used. The animals were housed in single boxes for 24 h daily and
