Freezing of gaze during action preparation under threat imminence.

When confronted with threatening stimuli, animals typically respond with freezing behavior characterized by reduced movement and heart rate deceleration. Freezing-like responses during threat anticipation have also been observed in humans and are associated with anxiety. Recent evidence yet suggests that freezing does not necessarily reflect helpless immobility but can also aid the preparation of a threat escape. To investigate which further behavioral responses human freezing encompasses, we presented 50 young adults (10 male) with aversive stimuli that could sometimes be avoided while measur

Further characteristics of Arcanobacterium canis, a novel species of genus Arcanobacterium.

Comparable to previously conducted phenotypical and genotypical investigations characterizing Arcanobacterium canis, a newly described species with the type strain A. canis DSM 25104 isolated from an otitis externa of a dog, four additional A. canis strains isolated from infections of three dogs and one cat could reliably be identified by phenotypic properties, by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and by sequencing the genomic targets 16S rDNA, 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region, 23S rDNA, and the genes rpoB and gap. All four A. cani

Exploring Aeromonas dhakensis in Aldabra giant tortoises: a debut report and genetic characterization.

Aeromonas dhakensis (A. dhakensis) is becoming an emerging pathogen worldwide, with an increasingly significant role in animals and human health. It is a ubiquitous bacteria found in terrestrial and aquatic milieus. However, there have been few reports of reptile infections. In this study, a bacterial strain isolated from a dead Aldabra giant tortoise was identified as A. dhakensis HN-1 through clinical observation, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS), and gene sequencing analysis. Subsequently, to evaluate its pathogenicity, the detectio

Wild harbour porpoises startle and flee at low received levels from acoustic harassment device.

Acoustic Harassment Devices (AHD) are widely used to deter marine mammals from aquaculture depredation, and from pile driving operations that may otherwise cause hearing damage. However, little is known about the behavioural and physiological effects of these devices. Here, we investigate the physiological and behavioural responses of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) to a commercial AHD in Danish waters. Six porpoises were tagged with suction-cup-attached DTAGs recording sound, 3D-movement, and GPS (n = 3) or electrocardiogram (n = 2). They were then exposed to AHDs for 15 min, with initi

Behavioral and neuroimmune characterization of resilience to social stress: Rewarding effects of cocaine.

Preclinical studies have shown that social stress increases vulnerability to the reinforcing effects of cocaine. However, the results are not always homogeneous, revealing a subpopulation that does not show a preference for cocaine. Thus, the main aim of the present study was to characterize the behavioral profile of resilient mice to the stress-induced rewarding effects of cocaine using an animal model of repeated social defeat stress (SD). To this end, male adult mice of the C57/BL6 strain were exposed to SD and, three weeks later, assessed using the Conditioned Place Preference paradigm ind

Natural barriers: waterfall transit by small flying animals.

Waterfalls are conspicuous geomorphological features with heterogeneous structure, complex dynamics and multiphase flows. Swifts, dippers and starlings are well-known to nest behind waterfalls, and have been reported to fly through them. For smaller fliers, by contrast, waterfalls seem to represent impenetrable barriers, but associated physical constraints and the kinematic responses of volant animals during transit are unknown. Here, we describe the flight behaviour of hummingbirds (the sister group to the swifts) and of various insect taxa as they fly through an artificial sheet waterfall. W

Occurrence of dysentery-like diarrhoea associated with Brachyspira suanatina infection on a German fattening pig farm.

The anaerobic intestinal spirochaete Brachyspira (B.) suanatina was first described in 2007 but since then no further isolates have been reported from pigs. Accordingly, when the species was validly published in 2016, the overall occurrence and clinical relevance in pigs were unknown. In a fattening farm in southern Germany, mucohaemorrhagic diarrhoea was observed in 60 per cent (750 animals) of the finisher pigs. A diagnostic workup including Brachyspira culture, Salmonella culture, Lawsonia intracellularis-specific, B. hyodysenteriae-specific and B. pilosicoli-specific multiplex PCR and post

Free-Ranging Synanthropic Birds (Ardea alba and Columba livia domestica) as Carriers of Salmonella spp. and Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli in the Vicinity of an Urban Zoo.

The presence of free-ranging urban birds is a risk factor for transmitting pathogens to captive animals and humans alike, including Salmonella spp. and diarrheagenic Escherichia coli. Cloacal swabs from 156 synanthropic Great egrets (Ardea alba) and feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica) that inhabit the surroundings of an urban zoo were processed for the identification of Salmonella spp. and diarrheagenic E. coli pathotypes. Bacterial species identification and genotypic characterization employed the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and PCR techniq

Proteomic analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid: effect of acute exposure to diesel exhaust particles in rats.

BACKGROUND: Inhalation of diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) is characterized by lung injury and inflammation, with significant increases in the numbers of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and alveolar macrophages. This influx of cellular infiltrates is associated with the activation of multiple genes, including cytokines and chemokines, and the production of reactive oxygen species. OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of the lung injury is not fully understood, but alterations in the presence or abundance of a number of proteins in the lung have been observed. Our objective in this study was to further cha

Tonic efferent-induced cochlear damping in roosting and echolocating mustached bats.

The activity of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system in mustached bats, Pteronotus p. parnellii, was studied by monitoring changes in the mechanical properties of the cochlea. The changing properties were expressed by the decay time (DT) of cochlear microphonic potentials produced by transient-induced ringing (Henson et al., 1995). Tape-recorded roost noise (biosonar and communication sounds) produced sudden, marked decreases in DT when presented to the contralateral ear of animals adapted to the quiet. When the animals were first removed from their roosts the DT was relatively short

Acute cocaine effects on stereotype and defense: an ethoexperimental approach.

Cocaine administration to laboratory animals may produce locomotor hyperactivity and stereotypies that include sniffing and rearing, in addition to anxiety-like effects. A time-sampling study of the effects of 3, 10 or 30 mg/kg cocaine (i.p.) over time following injection indicated early enhancement of locomotion and crouching, with the latter most increased in low- and intermediate-dose cocaine groups, with increased rearing and standing during the second hour of the test period. Additional analyses at 30-60 min post-injection suggested qualitative changes in rearing, with high dose animals s

Development of a MALDI-TOF MS model for differentiating haemorrhagic septicaemia-causing strains of Pasteurella multocida from other capsular groups.

Pasteurella multocida capsular types A, D, and F cause disease in many animal hosts, including bovine respiratory disease in cattle, which is one of the most globally significant animal diseases. Additionally, P. multocida capsular types B and E cause haemorrhagic septicaemia, a devastating disease primarily of cattle, water buffalo, and bison that develops rapidly with high mortality. Haemorrhagic septicaemia mostly occurs in developing countries and has potential to emerge elsewhere in the world. The diagnosis of haemorrhagic septicaemia currently requires recognition of compatible gross or

Comparative proteomic analysis of hen egg white proteins during early phase of embryonic development by combinatorial peptide ligand library and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight.

Little is known regarding the diversification of relative low-abundance proteins in hen egg white that underlie the process of chicken embryonic development. The purpose of this study was to identify changes that may be involved in the development of chick embryos. Comparative proteomic analysis was conducive to revealing the potential biological function of low-abundance proteins and embryonic development demand. In addition, those proteins that are increased in abundance seem to have advantages to be targeted as new biomarkers for animal disease or animal production. However, the huge dispar

Combined Injection for Control of Iron-Deficiency Anemia and Coccidiosis in Piglets Decreases Stress at Management Time.

The aim of the present study was to assess the short-term behavioral and physiological responses of piglets to different treatment protocols for the control of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and cystoisosporosis. Piglets were treated with either (1) an injection of iron combined with an oral application of toltrazuril (TLZ) by drenching or (2) a combination injection of TZL + gleptoferron; the behavior of the piglets was then evaluated. For this study, 288 piglets were divided into three experimental groups: 96 piglets were kept untreated (control group); 96 piglets received an oral administrati

Ethanol: dose-dependent flight responses of bark and woodboring beetles, and associated species of Coleoptera.

In 2007 to 2008, I assessed the effects of ethanol release rate (dose) on trap catches of bark and woodboring beetles, and associated species of predators, in 6 experiments in north-central Georgia. Multiple-funnel traps were baited with ethanol alone or co-baited with α-pinene (with or without the bark beetle pheromones ipsenol and ipsdienol). The following species of bark and ambrosia beetles exhibited a positive dose-dependent response to ethanol, regardless of co-baits: Corthylus columbianus Hopkins, Dryoxylon onoharaense (Murayama), Hylastes porculus Erichson, Hylastes salebrosus Eichhoff

The survival and flight capacity of commercial honeybees and endangered stingless bees are impaired by common agrochemicals.

The impact of agrochemicals on native Brazilian bees may be underestimated, since studies of non-target effects on bees have, by and large, concerned mostly the Apis mellifera L. Furthermore, bees may be exposed in the field to multiple agrochemicals through different routes, thus suggesting the necessity for more comprehensive toxicological experiments. Here, we assessed the lethal and sublethal toxicity of multiple agrochemicals (herbicide [glyphosate - Roundup®], fungicide [mancozeb], insecticide [thiamethoxam]) through distinct routes of exposure (contact or ingestion) to an endangered nat
