Screening for anthrax occurrence in soil of flooded rural areas in Poland after rainfalls in spring 2010.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Anthrax spores remain viable and infectious in soil for decades. Flood water can percolate towards the surface the spores buried in soil. Moreover, the flood water might transport spores to areas previously unaffected. After the water recedes the spores located on the surface of the ground can be consumed by grazing animals and cause outbreaks of anthrax. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Soil samples were collected in areas of Poland most affected by floods in 2010 (Lubelskie, Świętokrzyskie, Podkarpackie and Mazowieckie provinces). After heating with the aim to kill vegetati…

Structure of the Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale (CRIES) with children and adolescents exposed to debris flood.

AIM: PTSD symptoms were pervasive among children and adolescents after experiencing or exposure to traumatic events. Screening and diagnosis of PTSD symptoms is crucial in trauma-related research and practice. The 13-item Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale (CRIES) has been demonstrated to be a valid and reliable tool to achieve this goal. This study was designed to examine the psychometric properties of the 13-item CRIES in a sample of Chinese debris flood victims. METHODS: A total of 268 participants (145 girls, 123 boys) aged 8-18 years were recruited from an integral part of a servic

Repetitive flood victims and acceptance of FEMA mitigation offers: an analysis with community-system policy implications.

Of all natural disasters, flooding causes the greatest amount of economic and social damage. The United States' Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) uses a number of hazard mitigation grant programmes for flood victims, including mitigation offers to relocate permanently repetitive flood loss victims. This study examines factors that help to explain the degree of difficulty repetitive flood loss victims experience when they make decisions about relocating permanently after multiple flood losses. Data are drawn from interviews with FEMA officials and a survey of flood victims from eight r

Yard flooding by irrigation canals increased the risk of West Nile disease in El Paso, Texas.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of use of water from irrigation canals to flood residential yards on the risk of West Nile disease in El Paso, Texas. METHODS: West Nile disease confirmed cases in 2009 through 2010 were compared with a random sample of 50 residents of the county according to access to and use of water from irrigation canals by subjects or their neighbors, as well as geo-referenced closest distance between their home address and the nearest irrigation canal. A windshield survey of 600 m around the study subjects' home address recorded the presence of irrigation canals. The

Stress hormones during flooding therapy and their relationship to therapy outcome in patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia.

In spite of excessive fear during a panic attack, studies have found no or little evidence for an activation of cortisol during natural panic attacks. Whether this phenomenon is related to psychopathology or outcome of psychotherapy is unknown. In this study, 10 patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia were treated with cognitive behavioural therapy including 3 in-vivo exposures (flooding) to individual phobic situations. Before, during and after exposure, the level of subjective fear was assessed and blood was collected simultaneously. Cortisol and ACTH were analysed from plasma. Ten matc

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms, Relationship Adjustment, and Relationship Aggression in a Sample of Female Flood Victims.

This study tested a model examining the interrelationships among posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, intimate relationship adjustment, and intimate relationship aggression in a sample of 205 adult female flood victims. At the bivariate level, higher PTSD symptoms were associated with higher physical and psychological aggression victimization, poorer relationship adjustment, and higher physical and psychological aggression perpetration. Results from structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses indicated that relationship aggression victimization influenced aggression perpetration dire

Health system response to climate-related shocks in a lower-middle-income country setting: A comparative study of floods and droughts in Pakistan.

Climate-related shocks in Pakistan, particularly floods and droughts, are increasingly disrupting essential health services and worsening existing vulnerabilities. Despite expanded disaster management structures, the health system's ability to anticipate, absorb, and adapt to these shocks remains poorly understood. This study explored how planning, resourcing, coordination, and service delivery function during floods and droughts, and how communities cope with these pressures across high-risk districts. Using an exploratory qualitative design, data were collected through interviews with nation…

Exploring Droughts and Floods and Their Association with Cholera Outbreaks in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Register-Based Ecological Study from 1990 to 2010.

Cholera outbreaks in Africa have been attributed to both droughts and floods, but whether the risk of a cholera outbreak is elevated during droughts is unknown. We estimated the risk of cholera outbreaks during droughts and floods compared with drought- and flood-free periods in 40 sub-Saharan African countries during 1990-2010 based on data from Emergency Events Database: the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance /Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters International Disaster Database (www.emdat.be). A cholera outbreak was registered in one of every three droughts and one of ever…

From the Eye of the Storm to Epidemiological Footprints After the Floods: Viral, Vector-Borne, and One Health Risks Post-Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica.

Hurricanes cause severe impacts on lives, livelihoods, and essential systems. Hurricane Melissa impacted Jamaica as a Category 5 cyclone, resulting in estimated losses of approximately 41% of national GDP (US$8.8 billion) and eliciting widespread damage to housing, healthcare, agriculture, and urban infrastructure. Agriculture sustained heavy losses, with 41,000 hectares of damaged farmland and the loss of more than 1 million livestock animals. These impacts resulted in exposed animal closures with biological hazards. Using systems thinking, the PESTHEEL framework, and a One Health lens, we ar

Housing displacement experiences following major flooding in regional Australia: A qualitative study of online news articles.

BACKGROUND: The health impacts of flood displacement are increasingly acknowledged within broader literature. However, there remains limited research on the challenges of accessing post-flood accommodation and how these influence health and wellbeing, particularly mental health. This study explores the nature and extent of media reporting on 1) the experiences of people displaced from their homes and 2) the influence of accommodation access on physical and mental health and wellbeing, following a major flood in regional Australia. We then reflect on how accurately media reporting reflects broa

Flood-derived sludge as a reservoir of viable opportunistic pathogens after the October 2024 DANA in Valencia (Spain).

UNLABELLED: Extreme flooding events generate large volumes of contaminated sludge that may act as environmental reservoirs of viable microorganisms, yet their capacity to harbour viable bacteria with pathogenic potential remains poorly understood. Following the October 2024 DANA event in Valencia (Spain), flood-derived sludge was collected one month after the episode and analysed using enrichment-based culture, molecular detection, and phenotypic characterization. High loads of culturable bacteria (> 10⁶ CFU·g⁻¹ after enrichment) were recovered, with microbial communities dominated by Enteroba

Assessing the vulnerability of U.S. energy infrastructure to dual source flood hazards: A spatial and population exposure analysis.

Flood risk to U.S. energy infrastructure (EI) is shaped by both inland and coastal processes, yet most national assessments rely on a single hazard dataset. To address this limitation, we combine FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA; 1% annual chance) with NOAA's coastal composite (storm surge, high-tide flooding, sea-level rise, and related layers) to develop a unified view of exposure. Using a national EI inventory (n = 21,988), we conduct spatial overlays, county-level Getis-Ord Gi* clustering, subtype analyses, and a 5-mile population proximity assessment. Nationwide, 3174 facilities (14.

Latent transition of posttraumatic reactions' co-existent patterns in adolescents following a devastating flood: A longitudinal study.

Extant studies investigated co-existent patterns of post-traumatic reactions in adolescents following natural disasters and examined changes in these patterns over time. However, they focused exclusively on specific or non-specific reactions, or only on positive or negative reactions. To fill this gap, this study considered specific/non-specific and positive /negative valence in posttraumatic reactions, and then examined the latent patterns of post-traumatic stress disorder, post-traumatic growth, depression, and life satisfaction and further assessed changes in these patterns. Following a dev

Enhancing cross-regional transferability of super-resolution-based flood surrogate models for data-scarce catchments.

Deep learning-based flood surrogate models have shown promise in accelerating spatiotemporal flood simulations, yet their cross-regional transferability remains a significant challenge, limiting widespread application in data-scarce catchments. This study proposes a transfer learning framework to address the transferability of flood surrogate models across catchments with inconsistent base resolutions and diverse terrain features. Within this framework, flood surrogate modeling is considered as an image super-resolution task. Specifically, a Residual SwinUNet model is developed to fuse multi-c
