Ofuji's disease with unusual histological features.

A 20-year-old lady presented with a 3-month history of an itchy eruption affecting her face and trunk. Erythematous annular plaques with fol … ith dapsone resulted in an improvement in the eruption after 2 weeks. Ofuji's eosinophilic pustular folliculitis is becoming increasingly frequently recognized, and may not be as rare as initial reports suggested. In 1965, Ise and Ofuji reported the case of a Japanese woman who had recurrent episodes of follicular pustules affecting her face and back accompani …

Dermoscopic Features of Dermatitis Cruris Pustulosa et Atrophicans: A Retrospective Study from a Tertiary Care Center in South India.

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis cruris pustulosa et atrophicans (DCPA) is a chronic superficial folliculitis that can cause scarring alopecia if left untreated. Hardly any studies are there describing the dermoscopic features of DCPA. Dermoscopy can be a useful tool for diagnosing DCPA in addition to clinical and histopathological features and for differentiating other conditions like superficial folliculitis, folliculitis decalvans, and pseudofolliculitis. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the dermoscopic features of 30 patients with DCPA at a tertiary care center i…

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of alopecia areata is generally made on clinical examination alone. However, diagnosis may be difficult, particularly … drogenogenetic alopecia (7 cases), pseudo alopecia areata (7 cases), telogenic effluvium (4 cases), folliculitis decalvans (3 cases) and lupus discoides (1 case). Patients with types of alopecia other than alopecia areata were studied as controls. The videomicroscopic examination was carried out on the centre and area surrounding the plaques of alopecia. The i …

Forehead Reduction Surgery: Outcomes and Complications of 650 Cases in a Multiracial Population.

BACKGROUND: Forehead reduction surgery (FRS) is gaining popularity as a cosmetic procedure for individuals with disproportionately large foreheads. METHOD: A retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent FRS from April 2018 to May 2023. Data included sex, age, ethnicity, facial thirds measurement, forehead reduction, dehiscence, hematoma, infection, seroma, and necrosis. Patients with > 12-month follow-up (N = 287) were further analyzed for folliculitis, alopecia, postoperative effluvium, scar quality (SCAR scale) and patient satisfaction (5-point Likert scale). RESULTS: A tot…

Epidermal growth factor receptor/mitogen-activated kinase inhibitor treatment induces a distinct inflammatory hair follicle response that includes collapse of immune privilege.

BACKGROUND: Inhibitors of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFRi) or mitogen-activated kinase (MEKi) induce a folliculitis in 75-90% of patients, the pathobiology of which remains insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVES: To characterize changes in the skin immune status and global transcriptional profile of patients treated with EGFRi; to investigate whether EGFRi affects the hair follicle's (HF) immune privilege (IP); and to identify early proinflammatory signals induced by EGFRi/MEKi in human scalp HFs ex vivo. METHODS: Scalp biopsies were taken from patients exhibiting folliculitis treated…

Clinical practice guide for the treatment of perforating dermatosis.

Perforating dermatoses are a heterogeneous skin disease group defined by transepidermal elimination of various skin materials. Four classical forms of primary perforating dermatosis have been described, where the transepidermal elimination mechanism represents the hallmark of the disease: acquired reactive perforating collagenosis, elastosis perforans serpiginosa, Kyrle's disease and perforating folliculitis. Acquired reactive perforating collagenosis presents with transepidermal elimination of collagen fibers. Elastosis perforans serpiginosum presents with the elimination of elastic fibers. K…

They include Kyrle's disease, perforating folliculitis, reactive perforating collagenosis, and elastosis perforans serpiginosa. AIM: The aim of this study was to delineate the clinical and histopathological features of perforating disorders of the skin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study, we reviewed last 2 years…

Leishmaniosis and generalized demodicosis in three dogs: a clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study.

This paper describes the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of the skin lesions in three dogs with leishmaniosis and generalized demodicosis. Diffuse alopecia, crusts, folliculitis and furunculosis, as commonly seen in generalized demodicosis, were prominent in all the dogs. MicroIscopically, there was a diffuse and perifollicular superficial and deep granulomatous dermatitis and, in two dogs, both Copyright Demodex canis mites and Leishmania spp. amastigotes were observed in the same lesions. Numerous Mac387(+)macrophages were observed in the inflammatory infiltrates, but mac…

Dermatoses secondary to Asian cultural practices.

Although Asian cultural practices, such as acupuncture and threading, are widely used, there is limited medical literature describing their … taken for abuse by people unfamiliar with the practices. Hair oils may cause contact dermatitis and folliculitis. Paraphenylenediamine in black henna and bindi dyes and adhesives can cause severe allergic contact dermatitis. The drawstring in saris causes frictional irritation, which can lead to tinea corporis, koebnerization, and even squamous cell carcinoma. …

The increasing role of Microsporum canis in the variety of dermatophytic manifestations reported from Israel.

During a period of 8 years 300 cases of dermatophytoses involving both hairy areas and the glabrous skin were found to be caused by M. canis. There was scalp involvement in 60%, including 8 infants and 27 adults; most of the adults presented Kerion-like lesions and presented various clinical aspects such as seborrhea capitis, folliculitis and discoid lupus erythematosus. In the 21 patients showing invasion of the beard the clinical manifestations included superficial erythemato-squamous patches with hyperemic slightly elevated margins, folliculitis or abscess-like lesions and Kerion-like lesio…

Three cases of immune-mediated adnexal skin disease treated with cyclosporin.

Cyclosporin is currently considered a new and interesting drug in veterinary dermatology for the treatment of immune-mediated skin diseases, and a safe and effective alternative to immunosuppressive therapy with glucocorticoids. The authors report a case of granulomatous folliculitis and furunculosis and of sebaceous adenitis in two cats and a case of alopecia areata in a dog, successfully controlled with cyclosporin.

Common bacterial skin infections.

Family physicians frequently treat bacterial skin infections in the office and in the hospital. Common skin infections include cellulitis, erysipelas, impetigo, folliculitis, and furuncles and carbuncles. Cellulitis is an infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue that has poorly demarcated borders and is usually caused by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus species. Erysipelas is a superficial form of cellulitis with sharply demarcated borders and is caused almost exclusively by Streptococcus. Impetigo is also caused by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus and can lead to lifting of the stratum c…
