Preventing or improving obesity by addressing specific eating patterns.

The problem of obesity and overweight is an epidemic in the United States. Weight is a product of energy balance: energy intake versus energy expenditure. The purpose of this review is to identify adult eating behaviors that are known to strongly affect the energy intake side of the energy balance and that may be readily amenable to prevention and intervention efforts in primary care. Restaurant and fast food consumption, large portion sizes, and consumption of beverages with sugar added increase energy intake and are highly associated with weight gain and obesity. Conversely, consumption of l

Diets could prevent many diseases.

The 2002 ISSFAL Meeting arranged a special evening discussion with professional dietitians about diet-tissue-disease relationships involving essential fatty acids and eicosanoids. The balance of eicosanoid precursors in human tissues differs widely, reflecting voluntary dietary choices among different groups worldwide. An empirical quantitative diet-tissue relationship fits these diverse values as well as other research reports on essential fatty acid metabolism. Information for dietitians and nutritionists about essential fatty acids and eicosanoids is also given in two distance learning web

Stress and food choice: a laboratory study.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated experimentally whether acute stress alters food choice during a meal. The study was designed to test claims of selective effects of stress on appetite for specific sensory and nutritional categories of food and interactions with eating attitudes. METHODS: Sixty-eight healthy men and women volunteered for a study on "the effects of hunger on physiology, performance, and mood." Eating attitudes and food preferences were measured on entry to the study. The stressed group prepared a 4-minute speech, expecting it to be filmed and assessed after a midday meal, alt…

Glycyl-L-glutamine injected centrally suppresses alcohol drinking in P rats.

Recent reports show that central beta-endorphin (1-31) injection augments the volitional intake of alcohol. Correspondingly, alcohol drinking stimulates beta-endorphin (1-31) release from the hypothalamus of the rat. Glycyl-l-glutamine (Gly-Gln) is produced in beta-endorphin-containing neurons and is co-released with beta-endorphin(1-31) and other processing products. Because Gly-Gln is apparently an endogenous antagonist of beta-endorphin(1-31) in several systems, the present study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that Gly-Gln injected i.c.v. would alter voluntary alcohol drinking i

Behavioral assessment of feeding problems of individuals with severe disabilities.

As many as 80% of the individuals with severe or profound mental retardation exhibit feeding problems. Although behavioral interventions have been used to treat these problems, no assessment procedure for determining a functional relationship between a person's acceptance of food and the type and texture of that food has been reported. The purpose of this study was to test a behavioral assessment procedure for a feeding problem of limited intake. Five individuals with severe or profound mental retardation were fed 10 to 12 types of foods with one or more textures. Behavioral categories of acce

Individual differences in addiction-like behaviors and choice between cocaine versus food in Heterogeneous Stock rats.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Recent studies reported that when given a mutually exclusive choice between cocaine and palatable food, most rats prefer the non-drug reward over cocaine. However, these studies used rat strains with limited genetic and behavioral diversity. Here, we used a unique outbred strain of rats (Heterogeneous Stock, HS) that mimic the genetic variability of humans. METHODS: We first identified individual differences in addiction-like behaviors (low and high). Next, we tested choice between cocaine and palatable food using a discrete choice procedure. We characterized the ind

The critical role of cognitive-based trait differences in transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) suppression of food craving and eating in frank obesity.

Obesity remains a major public health concern and novel treatments are needed. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulation technique shown to reduce food craving and consumption, especially when targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) with a right anode/left cathode electrode montage. Despite the implications to treat frank (non-bingeeating) obesity, no study has tested the right anode/left cathode montage in this population. Additionally, most tDCS appetite studies have not controlled for differences in traits under DLPFC control that may influence how wel

The Cost of Self-Sufficiency: Could New Zealand be Self-Sufficient in Food Consumption?

Ensuring that New Zealand can sustainably meet its future food needs requires an understanding of the interaction between domestic demand trends, trade and the capacity of national production systems. Although New Zealand is a major exporter of dairy, meat, fruit and other primary products, rising food insecurity, changing dietary preferences and increasing exposure to geopolitical and climate-related shocks have renewed interest in the resilience of domestic food supply. Using national consumption data (2010-2023) and production and yield data (2000-2024), we assessed temporal trends across O

Pigeons, unlike humans, do not prefer near hits in a slot-machine-like task.

Slot machines are among the most popular forms of commercial gambling, and the high frequency of losses that come close to winning - near hits - in this game appears to contribute to its popularity. In the present experiment we tested if pigeons, similarly to humans, prefer an alternative that provides near-hit outcomes in a slot-machine-like task. The pigeons received series of three stimuli, one every two seconds: if the three stimuli matched, food was delivered (a win); if they did not match, food was not delivered (a loss). We gave pigeons a choice between two options that provided food wi

Improved planning abilities in binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: The role of planning in binge eating episodes is unknown. We investigated the characteristics of planning associated with food cues in binging patients. We studied planning based on backward reasoning, reasoning that determines a sequence of actions back to front from the final outcome. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 20 healthy participants, 20 bulimia nervosa (BN), 22 restrictive (ANR) and 23 binging anorexia nervosa (ANB), without any concomitant impulsive disorder. In neutral/relaxing, binge food and stressful conditions, backward reasoning was assessed with

The Weight of Responsibilities: Time in Responsibilities and in Food Preparation.

BACKGROUND: The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans emphasize whole, minimally processed foods. However, the time required to prepare these foods may present a barrier. There is limited research on how other responsibilities shape food preparation activities. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify the daily life activities that adults in the United States consider responsibilities and evaluate the association between the amount of time spent on responsibilities and food preparation activities. METHODS: Using data from a national survey among United States adults, we i

Women's Knowledge of Local Plants and Their Gastronomic Heritage in Chitral, NW Pakistan.

Women are the "guardians of the kitchen" and central to household food security, yet their role has never been studied across the Hindukush region or Pamiri Knot. This study explores the women's knowledge (specifically from the Khowar (Kho) and Wakhi linguistic groups) of local food systems and determines their role in ensuring household food security and sustainability in the mountain regions of northern Pakistan. Based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with female informants in the Rech and Broghil valleys of upper Chitral, 91 different types of food products were recorded, including wi

Preference for a high fat diet, but not hyperphagia following activation of mu opioid receptors is blocked in AgRP knockout mice.

Activation of mu opioid receptors (MOR) makes animals hyperphagic and selectively increases their preference for a high fat diet independent of their dietary preference. The orexigenic peptide Agouti Related Peptide (AgRP) also produces hyperphagia and increased the preference for a high fat diet. In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that the effect of MOR on feeding behavior will be attenuated in the absence of the orexigenic peptide AgRP. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated that MOR are co-localized on AgRP neurons located in the arcuate nucleus. This finding is consistent with a rol

[Sensory food aversion in the context of a modern approach to eating disorders in early childhood].

Sensory food aversion, an early childhood eating disorder, is a serious, permanent form of picky eating, in which the infant or the child consistently and persistently refuses certain foods based on specific characteristics, following one or more previous aversive experiences. Biological (sensory processing disorder, taste sensitivity) and environmental factors contribute to its development. Due to limited diet, specific dietary deficiencies may occur but weight gain is usually normal. Behavioral problems, anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder are often associated. Diagnosis can usually b

Factors associated with the early emergence of atypical feeding behaviours in infants and young children: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Atypical feeding behaviours such as significantly limited food preferences, hypersensitivity to food textures or temperatures and pocketing food without swallowing are common concerns in child health. Current reports indicate an inter-relationship between early growth, feeding problems and developmental disorders, yet little is known about how these behaviours develop in early childhood. There is also a lack of consensus about clinical definitions for atypical feeding behaviours, diagnostic thresholds and the associated precursors. To date, there has been no synthesis of the extant…

Association Between Feeding Problems and Oral Health Status in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

A number of studies have been made of mealtime behavioral problems and food selectivity in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), though not from a multidisciplinary perspective where diet and dental care are investigated in children with ASD. In the present study, the parents of 55 children with ASD and 91 children with typical development (TD) between 6 and 18 years of age completed the Brief Assessment of Mealtime Behavior in Children (BAMBIC) and a food consumption frequency questionnaire. A pediatric dentist performed an oral exploration of the participants according to the criteri

Pregnancy sickness: a biopsychological perspective.

Pregnancy sickness is a universal phenomenon, affecting 70% to 85% of all pregnant women. The primary symptoms of pregnancy sickness are nausea, vomiting, and food aversions. In the past, pregnancy sickness was attributed to psychological disturbances of the pregnant woman. However, recent evolutionary psychological and biopsychological studies have reconsidered pregnancy sickness as an embryo-protective mechanism, an evolutionary adaptation to protect the embryo from phytotoxins and other environmental hazards. The biopsychological perspective of pregnancy sickness as an embryo-protective mec

Preference for dietary fat induced by release of beta-endorphin in rats.

AIMS: To determine whether beta-endorphin contributes to the ingestion of and preference for dietary oil, we examined the relationship between the dynamics of beta-endorphin, before and after the ingestion of corn oil, and the intake volume of corn oil. MAIN METHODS: Rats were offered 5% corn oil for 20 min for 5 consecutive days so they could acquire a preference for corn oil. On day 6, seven groups of rats were presented with the oil for defined time periods, and we measured the beta-endorphin levels in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) before and after the presentation of corn oil as
