[Intrapalpebral migration of a form stable contact lens: a rare complication in contact lens practice].

PURPOSE: To demonstrate a rare complication in contactology. CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old female had "lost" her hard contact lens in the right eye 2 years previously. Afterwards, new contact lenses were not tolerated. The patient had a slight intermittent epiphora but no further complaints. She consulted her ophthalmologist for new spectacles. At presentation, there was a firm tumour without signs of inflammation in the right upper lid area. When the lid was everted a hard contact lens was found within the tarsal plate which could be easily removed in the operating room. Microbiologic investiga

[Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy on a clam shell fragment lodged in the ileocecal valve].

Herein we describe what may be the first case of ESWL used in the treatment of mechanical ileus caused by a fragment of clam shell lodged in the terminal ileum. The 66-year-old patient was referred by the emergency department with symptoms and signs of upper GI tract obstruction. ESWL with the modified Dornier HM3 was performed under neuroleptoanalgesia with the patient in the prone decubitus position. 1700 shock waves at 20 Kv were used to achieve fragmentation and restore intestinal transit, thus avoiding surgery.

Appendiceal Perforation due to Migration of a Dental Instrument.

A 40-year-old male without any past medical history accidentally swallowed a titanium dental instrument (reamer) for root canal treatment. A cathartic was prescribed at a local hospital, and the course was observed. However, since the reamer was not excreted in feces, he was referred to our hospital. After admission, CT, lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, and barium enema revealed the migration of a foreign body into the appendix and its protrusion into the intraperitoneal cavity. As an emergency operation, laparoscopic appendectomy including the foreign body was performed. The following course

Computed tomographic features of pneumothorax secondary to a bronchopleural fistula in two dogs.

A bronchopleural fistula (BPF) can lead to continuous pneumothorax and is rarely reported clinically in dogs. This report describes computed tomographic (CT) findings in two dogs with BPFs and subsequent continuous pneumothoraces that necessitated thoracotomy. Both dogs had a peripheral BPF in the right caudal lung lobe. The fistula in one dog was secondary to a previous foreign body migration, and the fistula in the other was thought to be secondary to dirofilariasis. On both CT examinations, a dilated subsegmental bronchus was seen communicating with the pleural space at the center of a foca

Extraluminal migration of a coin in the oesophagus of a child misdiagnosed as asthma.

Ingestion of a foreign body, the commonest being a coin, is a common problem in children. In most cases the coin will pass uneventfully through the gastrointestinal tract. However, on rare occasions it may become lodged in the oesophagus with subsequent extraluminal migration with the potential for serious complications such as vascular fistula or chronic suppurative infection. A case is presented of extraluminal migration of a coin in the oesophageal associated with abscess formation in a 15 month old boy. This case is particularly important because the presenting symptom of wheezing led to t

Acute abdomen in the centanary patient, mesh migration into the sigmoid colon after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (TAPP): A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: The complications induced by mesh, such as foreign body reaction, deep-seated infection, mesh migration and perforation into viscera, have been reported sporadically. Colon erosion and penetration by laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair mesh can possibly cause perforation of the colon with acute abdomen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 100-year-old male, who underwent 4 years ago TAPP repair of left inguinal, presented to the emergency department with acute abdomen due to chronic mesh penetration into the sigmoid colon, the migrating mesh generated a free w

Embolización de cuerpo extraño por la raíz aórtica por lesión por arma de fuego: caso clínico de una paciente asintomática de diez años.

Foreign body embolies that origin arterial system have mostly seen symptomatic and that's why they require emergency surgery. However, asymptomatic cases are followed conservatively, they can cause vascular-related end-organ pathologies as time passes. Foreign body migration from the ascending aorta to the end-organ artery is a very rare in literature after a fire gun injury. In symptomatic cases, emergency surgery should be planned immediately. In asymptomatic cases, the risks and benefits should first be considered before any surgical approach.

Foreign Body in the Male Urinary Bladder: A Case Report.

A foreign body in the urinary bladder is an uncommon finding in urology emergencies. There are several ways in which intravesical foreign bodies can occur, including iatrogenic injuries, self-insertion for pleasure, sexual abuse, assault, and migration from adjacent sites. This case report is about an interesting presentation of a 36-year-old male who presented to the urology outpatient department with a burning sensation and dribbling while urinating for 1 month. An X-ray of the pelvis revealed multiple radiodensities (morphology was suggested as magnetic balls) in the pelvic soft tissues. Cy

Retrieval of Broken Guidewire from the Hip Joint Protruding inside the Pelvic Cavity: A Rare Case Report.

Hardware breakage in the form of guide wire or drill bit is a devastating complication particularly if occurs around hip joint during cephalo-medullary nailing. It should be removed on urgent basis as it can migrate to the pelvic cavity and damages adjacent neuro-vascular bundle and visceral organ immediately as well joint arthritis later on. There are very few cases report available in the literature with retrieval techniques by using disc forceps, pituitary forceps, oversized reamers, arthrotomy with joint dislocation and through ilioinguinal approaches occasionally. We are presenting an int

Entrapment of a metal foreign body in the cervical spinal canal during surgical procedure: A case report.

RATIONALE: Retention of foreign objects in spinal canal usually results from penetrating spinal trauma or failed internal instruments. However, entrapment of a foreign body in cervical spinal canal during surgery is rare, and whether such an object may cause neurological complications remains unknown in literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old man underwent C5 corpectomy and instrumentation surgery due to cervical myelopathy. During the surgery, the cutting edge of a Kerrison rongeur was broken and the metal tip was retained behind C4 vertebra. DIAGNOSIS: Retention of foreign body in the

[Intrauterine contraceptive device in an appendix--a case report].

The application of an intrauterine contraceptive device can perforate the uterus and migrate to adjacent organs such as the bladder or small bowel. The main symptoms are painful insertion of the intrauterine contraceptive device and missing IUD strings. The diagnosis of perforation and transuterine migration of the IUD is made on the basis of an ultrasound examination and an abdominal X-ray. The proper management is such case is immediate removal of the IUD. The aim of this paper was to present a case of a 34-year-old woman with a copper IUD found during a caesarean section.

Chronic headache as a sequela of rigid fixation for craniosynostosis.

Rigid fixation has been used over the past 20 years for the long-lasting correction of traumatic and congenital craniofacial defects. It has been noted that the use of plates and screws can result in the migration of the hardware through the skull to the inner cerebral cortex where it embeds in the dura. In addition, there is controversy concerning the safety of using titanium plates in the pediatric population. We report here on an 8-year-old boy who presented to our clinic with a chronic headache after rigid craniofacial fixation using titanium plates 7 years before.

Cranial nerve palsy as a delayed complication of attempted infanticide by insertion of a stylet through the fontanel. Case report.

A child suffered a sixth and seventh cranial nerve palsy due to intracerebral insertion of a stylet. The stylet was introduced through the anterior fontanel, most probably in an attempt at infanticide. The migration of the stylet through the brain was monitored because the child was first examined 6 years earlier. At operation the cranial part of the stylet lay in the fourth ventricle, compressing the facial nerve as well as the nucleus of the abducens nerve. The lower part of the stylet had reached the C-5 level.

Retained surgical textilomas occur more often during war.

Retained surgical textile foreign bodies are a problem despite precautions taken by surgeons. Computed tomography (CT) is a method of choice in diagnosing the cases of retained textilomas. Over 12 years, we diagnosed 11 acute textilomas in 10 patients in the early postoperative period within 3 months after abdominal surgery. The presence of considerable amount of air bubbles within textile fibers was the most representative sign. A 3-10 mm wide peripheral rim was present in all textilomas. In additional 3 cases, chronic, encapsulated foreign body granulomas were found, two were mimicking renal
