INTRODUCTION: Cranial bone grafts are commonly used for preimplant or facial reconstructive surgery. However, removing bone may weaken the parietal bone and lead to a loss of strength. This loss has never been quantified. Bone harvest site reconstruction is being carried out more frequently than in the past, but its effect on the strength of the donor site is unknown. The aim of our study is to quantify the loss of strength due to a monocortical cranial bone graft harvest in sheep.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four fresh sheep cadaver heads were used for the study. We performed a monocortica

Frontal sinusitis with frontal osteomyelitis is a potentially life threatening disease. Diagnostic and therapeutic errors occur frequently because of antibiotic masking of already silent frontal lobe complications or lack of suspicion on the part of the otolaryngologist or the neurosurgeon. Frontal sinus infection and/or trauma frequently require otoneuro cooperation for care. Four cases of complications of frontal sinus infection with osteomyelitis are discussed. Three had epidural empyemas and one had a subdural empyema with an anterior 1/3 superior sagittal sinus thrombosis and multiple bra

Three-dimensional osseous surface re-formation imaging from CT scans was used to examine the facial skeletons of 14 living patients with mandibulofacial dysostosis. Partial to complete aplasia of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, mild hypoplasia to aplasia of the frontal process of the zygoma, antimongoloid slant of the transverse orbital axis, and hypoplasia of the medial pterygoid plates and muscles are common to all patients examined. Deformities of the zygoma, zygomatic process of the frontal bone, mandible, and lateral pterygoid plates and muscles vary from minimal to severe, in

Metopic craniosynostosis causes characteristic cranial deformities such as a keel-shaped forehead, known as trigonocephaly. Mild trigonocephaly refers to cases of metopic craniosynostosis in which the cranial deformity is generally mild. The authors report a case of mild trigonocephaly accompanied by an atypical horizontal constricting ring of the skull that was successfully treated surgically. The patient was a 3-month-old boy with no notable medical history who presented to a pediatric clinic with frontal prominence. Computed tomography (CT) revealed premature fusion of the metopic suture, a

Pott's Puffy tumor, also called Pott's edematous tumor (PET), is a subperiosteal abscess of the frontal bone, associated with osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. In this paper, we report the case of a 16-year-old patient who presented with headache associated with progressive forehead swelling and fever. Clinical and imaging exams pointed to the hypothesis of PET associated with brain abscess. Patient was submitted to surgical excision of the abscess and treatment of osteomyelitis, with intraoperative findings corroborating the condition. There was a good clinical-radiological recovery associat

Frontal sinus fractures account for 2% to 15% of maxillofacial injuries. Up to 66% to 87% of the patients with frontal sinus fractures experience associated facial fractures. The majority of classifications used today categorize frontal sinus fractures depending on the integrity of the anterior table, posterior table, and the nasofrontal outflow. A retrospective study was performed, which included 24 patients diagnosed with frontal sinus fractures. Treatment in all patients consisted of open reduction and bone fixation. We analyzed population variables, injury etiology, fracture site, associat

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique with the potential to mitigate age-related cognitive decline, yet most models do not account for the substantial anatomical variability of older adults. We aimed to identify neuroanatomical predictors of brain current density (Jbrain) during bilateral frontal tDCS using individualized, high-fidelity head models. We constructed 11-tissue MRI-based models in 367 cognitively healthy older adults (Mean age = 71.64 years), representing, to our knowledge, the largest manually corrected 11-tissue dataset of this

Immediate reconstruction of severely comminuted frontobasilar skull fractures involving the frontal sinus can be accomplished safely if the sinus is cranialized and the floor of the anterior cranial fossa is totally reconstructed. Operative time can be reduced if the pieces of the frontal bone are reassembled and stabilized with rigid fixation devices out of the surgical field and thus made ready for reinsertion as a single unit after any necessary neurosurgical procedures are completed. Immediate reconstruction provides postoperative protection for the brain and eliminates the need to return

The frequency of supraorbital rim fractures is increasing as incidence of motorcycle and bicycle accidents increases. These fractures are frequently depressed, comminuted, and often extend into the frontal sinus. Open reduction and fixation are the treatment of choice. Adequate debridement and cleansing with preservation of periosteum and blood supply are recommended. Unstable fragments can be fixed to the frontal bone or stabilized by suturing the torn periosteum. Severely comminuted supraorbital frontal sinus fractures may require stabilization via frontal sinus pack or balloon. We feel the

Reconstruction of the frontal bar following complex craniofacial fractures involving the frontal sinus is a central strategic element, and inaccurate reduction can result in contour defects and non-union. Such defects can be reconstructed using autogenous bone from the inner table of a calvarial graft. Traditionally this is done with rotary instruments and osteotomes. In this article, we describe the use of piezoelectric surgery to harvest the graft. This technique allows for more precise and less destructive harvesting of autogenous bone with the additional benefit of reducing the risk of inj

Premature closure of one coronal suture results in bilateral abnormalities. There is always ipsilateral flatness of the orbital rim, and contralateral frontal bossing is often found. The authors have employed three operative techniques for correction of unilateral coronal synostosis: frontal bone overlay, lateral canthal advancement, and the tongue-in-groove procedure. The choice of operative technique depends upon the exact deformity to be corrected. The authors believe that altering the relations between the bone and dura by techniques such as radical remodeling and dural plication may impro

Eleven patients with syndromic craniosynostosis were treated with gradual distraction fronto-orbital advancement using "floating forehead." The frontal and supraorbital area was cut and remolded. Bony orbits were widened in three patients. Frontal bone was let floating on the dura and fixed loosely with absorbable threads to remolded supraorbital bone. A pair of distracters with hinge plates (A.V.D. system, Bear Medic Corp, Tokyo, Japan) was fixed between the temporal area and supraorbital bone. Distraction was begun 5 to 7 days after the surgery, and 1.8 to 3.2 cm advancement was obtained. Di

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare benign bone neoplasm of unknown cause. The most commonly affected anatomical sites are the vertebral column and long bones. We report two uncommon cases of primary orbital aneurysmal bone cyst presenting as an acute orbital compartment syndrome due to subperiosteal hemorrhage. Case 1 is a 45-year-old woman. Imaging studies revealed a small cystic frontal bone tumour associated with a subperiosteal hematoma. The patient achieved full visual recovery after drainage of the hematoma, with no recurrence after treatment. Case 2 is a 74-year-old woman whose visual acuit

Frontal bossing can be caused by many craniofacial syndromes, however an enlarged frontal sinus is a rare cause. Because of this the management of this condition is variable. One option is to remove the anterior wall of the frontal sinus and dividing this into segments which are then fixed in the desired position using miniplates. This however may prove difficult in thin bone and in these cases the periosteum can be left intact to splint the fragments which are then repositioned using resorbable sutures.

Benign frontal masses represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge due to their aesthetic impact and the wide range of possible differential diagnoses. We present a comparative case series of two patients with benign frontal masses: a frontal lipoma and a frontal osteoma. Both cases highlight the importance of careful clinical evaluation, appropriate use of imaging studies, and tailored surgical planning to achieve optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes. Frontal osteomas are benign, slow-growing bone tumors arising from the cranial vault and represent the most common benign tumors of th
