Neuroimaging after critical illness: implications for neurorehabilitation outcome.

Survivors of critical illness frequently have severe and long-lasting cognitive impairments and psychiatric disorders, which adversely affect functional outcomes including return to work, and quality of life. While data regarding cognitive outcomes has increased over the last 15 years, neuroimaging data in medical and surgical critical populations is extremely limited. The abrupt development of new significant cognitive impairments after critical illness along with abnormalities on neuroimaging suggest that critical illness results in new acquired brain injury, similar to that observed in othe

Understanding the pathophysiology of essential tremor through advanced neuroimaging: a review.

Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurological diseases; but aetio-pathogenesis of ET is largely unknown. Major advances in neuroimaging may help us understand the mechanisms and networks involved in ET. Most commonly employed techniques include functional and structural neuroimaging. Functional imaging studies suggest that tremors in ET are of central origin with role of olivo-cerebellar and cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathways in tremor generation. Apart from tremors, ET is also characterised by cognitive dysfunction. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies suggest

Imaging psychogenic movement disorders.

The neurobiological basis of psychogenic movement disorders (PMDs) has been elusive, and they remain difficult to treat. In the last few years, functional neuroimaging studies have provided insight into their pathophysiology and neural correlates. Here, we review the various methodological approaches that have been used in both clinical and research practice to address neural correlates of functional disorders. We then review the dominant hypotheses generated from the literature on psychogenic paralysis. Overall, these studies emphasize abnormalities in the prefrontal and anterior cingulate co…

Brain imaging in neurobehavioral disorders.

Neuroimaging studies of neurobehavioral disorders are using new imaging modalities. In dyslexia, anatomic imaging studies demonstrate an abnormal symmetry of the planum temporale. Functional imaging supports the hypothesis that developmental dyslexia is frequently the result of deficits in phonologic processing and that normal reading requires a patent network organization of a number of anterior and posterior brain areas. In autism, anatomic imaging studies are conflicting. Functional imaging demonstrates temporal lobe abnormalities and abnormal interaction between frontal and parietal brain

[Aneurysm of a persistent sciatic artery: five case reports].

Psychoactive drugs can transiently perturb brain physiology while preserving brain structure. The role of physiological state in shaping neural function can therefore be investigated through neuroimaging of pharmacologically induced effects. Previously, using pharmacological neuroimaging, we found that neural and experiential effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) are attributable to agonism of the serotonin-2A receptor (Preller et al., 2018). Here, we integrate brain-wide transcriptomics with biophysically based circuit modeling to simulate acute neuromodulatory effects of LSD on human c

Structural and resting state functional connectivity beyond the cortex.

Mapping the structural and functional connectivity of the central nervous system has become a key area within neuroimaging research. While detailed network structures across the entire brain have been probed using animal models, non-invasive neuroimaging in humans has thus far been dominated by cortical investigations. Beyond the cortex, subcortical nuclei have traditionally been less accessible due to their smaller size and greater distance from radio frequency coils. However, major neuroimaging developments now provide improved signal and the resolution required to study these structures. He

Pediatric New Daily Persistent Headache: Integrating Novel Research Methods to Support and Delineate Evolving Clinical Phenotypes.

Pediatric new daily persistent headache (NDPH) is a clinically defined headache subtype that remains controversial due to a lack of unique a … ism relative to other headache subtypes. We review published research that addressed structural and functional neuroimaging in persons with NDPH. We found that research to date supports differences in both brain structure and function in persons with NDPH relative to healthy controls. Such differences reflect both cortical and sub-cortical regions of the brain. No studie …

Neuroimaging the Neuropathogenesis of HIV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review highlights neuroimaging studies of HIV conducted over the last 2 years and discusses how relevant findings further our knowledge of the neuropathology of HIV. Three major avenues of neuroimaging research are covered with a particular emphasis on inflammation, aging, and substance use in persons living with HIV (PLWH). RECENT FINDINGS: Neuroimaging has been a critical tool for understanding the neuropathological underpinnings observed in HIV. Recent studies comparing levels of neuroinflammation in PLWH and HIV-negative controls show inconsistent results but repor

The neural representation of an individualized relational affective space.

Humans experience emotions every day. Traditionally, psychology has described emotions through discrete labels (e.g. happy, afraid) or standardized affective dimensions (e.g. valence, arousal), and neuroscience has more recently sought the neurobiological basis of emotions via functional neuroimaging. However, by treating emotions similarly among everyone, we neglect that emotions are individualized; thus the overall relational structure of an individual's emotion information may be vital in understanding how the brain represents emotions. Combining behavioral and functional MRI experiments wi…

A positron emission tomography study of short- and long-term treatment effects on functional brain activation in adults who stutter.

UNLABELLED: Previous studies have shown that fluency-inducing techniques, such as choral speech, result in changes in neural activation as measured by functional neuroimaging. In the present study, positron emission tomography was used to investigate the effects of intensive behavioural treatment, followed by a 1-year maintenance program, on the pattern of cortical and subcortical activation in stuttering adults during silent and oral reading of single words. The results indicate changes in activation lateralisation, as well as a general reduction in over-activation, especially in the motor co…

Altered functional connectivity in persistent developmental stuttering.

Persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) is a speech disorder that impairs communication skills. Despite extensive research, the core causes of PDS are elusive. Converging evidence from task-induced neuroimaging methods has demonstrated the contributions of the basal ganglia and the cerebellum to PDS, but such task-state neuroimaging findings are often confounded by behavioral performance differences between subjects who stutter and normal controls. Here, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated functional connectivity within cerebellar-cortical and basal gan

Characterizing brain structural and functional abnormalities in borderline personality disorder by seed-based d mapping approach.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental disorder characterized by extreme instability in mood, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavioral patterns. Its core symptoms include intense mood swings, strained interpersonal relationships, disturbed self-identity, impulsive behaviors, and cognitive and perceptual abnormalities. The etiology of BPD is complex, involving genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors. Among neurobiological factors, neuroimaging studies have consistently reported inconsistent findings regarding amygdala volume in BPD patients-some MRI studies

The organisation of conceptual knowledge in the brain: The future's past and some future directions.

We review the development and current status of theories of the organisation and representation of conceptual knowledge in the human brain. The currently known facts from optic aphasia, category-specific semantic deficits, and functional neuroimaging are consistent with a framework in which the first-order constraint on the organisation of conceptual knowledge is domain. Data from functional neuroimaging suggests additionally a framework characterised by both domain- and modality-specific constraints. Work in congenital disorders and in apraxia indicate that the content of conceptual knowledge…

Asymmetry in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Clinical, neuroimaging and histological observations.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of the motor system marked by significant phenotypic heterogeneity. Motor symptoms in the limbs consistently emerge focally and asymmetrically and, whilst variable, the pattern of regional progression related to the balance of clinical upper and lower motor neuron signs, upper versus lower limb onset and hand dominance to some extent. The neurobiological mechanisms and pathological correlates for this lateralized onset and non-random progression are uncertain. Cerebral neuroimaging studies have commonly reported str

Parameter Space and Potential for Biomarker Development in 25 Years of fMRI Drug Cue Reactivity: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: In the last 25 years, functional magnetic resonance imaging drug cue reactivity (FDCR) studies have characterized some core aspects in the neurobiology of drug addiction. However, no FDCR-derived biomarkers have been approved for treatment development or clinical adoption. Traversing this translational gap requires a systematic assessment of the FDCR literature evidence, its heterogeneity, and an evaluation of possible clinical uses of FDCR-derived biomarkers. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the state of the field of FDCR, assess their potential for biomarker development, and outline a cl
