Characterization of Alzheimer conditions in MR images using volumetric and sagittal brainstem texture features.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Brainstem analysis in Magnetic Resonance Images is essential to detect Alzheimer's condition in the preclinical stages. In this work, an attempt has been made to segment the brainstem in sagittal (2D) and volumetric (3D) images and evaluate texture changes to differentiate Alzheimer's disease (AD) stages. METHOD: The images obtained from a public access database are spatial normalized, skull stripped and contrast enhanced. Morphological Reconstruction based Fast and Robust Fuzzy 'C' Means technique is used to cluster the brain tissue in preprocessed images into three

An Artificial Intelligence-Based Model for Performance Prediction of Acid Fracturing in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs.

Acid fracturing is one of the most effective techniques for improving the productivity of naturally fractured carbonate reservoirs. Natural fractures (NFs) significantly affect the design and performance of acid fracturing treatments. However, few models have considered the impact of NFs on acid fracturing treatments. This study presents a simple and computationally efficient model for evaluating acid fracturing efficiency in naturally fractured reservoirs using artificial intelligence-based techniques. In this work, the productivity enhancement due to acid fracturing is determined by consider

How do service robots generate customer value? Rethinking service robot acceptance model (sRAM) through necessary condition analysis.

This study reframes the Service Robot Acceptance Model (sRAM) as a value-centred framework. It examines how functional, social, relational and individual factors shape customer value in robot-mediated restaurant encounters and how this value drives re-patronage intention, word-of-mouth intention and robot-human rapport across generational cohorts. On-site intercept surveys were conducted with 351 diners in Kuala Lumpur restaurants using service robots. Using a disjoint two-stage PLS-SEM, the four second-order antecedent blocks predicted customer value and three post-use outcomes. Multi-group a

Prediction of lithium response in first-episode mania using the LITHium Intelligent Agent (LITHIA): Pilot data and proof-of-concept.

OBJECTIVES: Individualized treatment for bipolar disorder based on neuroimaging treatment targets remains elusive. To address this shortcoming, we developed a linguistic machine learning system based on a cascading genetic fuzzy tree (GFT) design called the LITHium Intelligent Agent (LITHIA). Using multiple objectively defined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1 H-MRS) inputs, we tested whether LITHIA could accurately predict the lithium response in participants with first-episode bipolar mania. METHODS: We identified 20 subjects with fir

Texture Classification and Visualization of Time Series of Gait Dynamics in Patients With Neuro-Degenerative Diseases.

The analysis of gait dynamics is helpful for predicting and improving the quality of life, morbidity, and mortality in neuro-degenerative patients. Feature extraction of physiological time series and classification between gait patterns of healthy control subjects and patients are usually carried out on the basis of 1-D signal analysis. The proposed approach presented in this paper departs itself from conventional methods for gait analysis by transforming time series into images, of which texture features can be extracted from methods of texture analysis. Here, the fuzzy recurrence plot algori

Evaluation of Wound-Healing Potential of Plant Extracts via Picture Fuzzy Multi-Attribute Decision-Making.

The rising number of chronic wounds across the world makes the creation of efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective wound healing biopolymers an urgent need in the sphere of biopharmaceuticals. However, the selection of the most appropriate candidate from many natural plant extracts with complex and heterogeneous phytochemical composition is a difficult task of multiattribute decision-making (MADM) because of uncertainties, hesitations in expert judgments, and incomplete experimental data. A new hybrid approach of MADM with the use of picture fuzzy sets (PFS) is suggested in this

Social identity coupling model in university students in high-level sports teams: based on grounded theory and fsQCA.

BACKGROUND: University students from high-level sports teams in China assume dual roles as formal students and elite athletes. This study develops a localized social identity coupling model to address the theoretical and empirical gaps in the existing literature. METHOD: Based on social identity theory, this study employs a mixed-method research paradigm integrating grounded theory and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The sample comprises 36 university students from high-level sports teams in China recruited from six universities. Semi-structured interviews and three-stage

Automatic computer-aided sacroiliac joint index analysis for bone scintigraphy.

Bone scintigraphy helps to detect sacroiliitis before the radiographic changes. Nuclear medicine physicians interpret lesion on sacroiliac joint by the aid of sacroiliac joint-to-sacrum uptake ratios (sacroiliac joint index, SII). Usually, the SII is measured by manually drawing regions of interest (ROI) over the sacroiliac joints and sacrum, which is a tedious, time consuming, and highly operator dependent procedure. In this approach, we developed an automatic SII measurement program based on fuzzy sets histogram thresholding, anatomy-based image segmentation method and pelvis reference point

Patient classification and outcome prediction in IgA nephropathy.

OBJECTIVE: IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) is a common kidney disease which may entail renal failure, known as End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD). One of the major difficulties dealing with this disease is to predict the time of the long-term prognosis for a patient at the time of diagnosis. In fact, the progression of IgAN to ESKD depends on an intricate interrelationship between clinical and laboratory findings. Therefore, the objective of this work has been the selection of the best data mining tool to build a model able to predict (I) if a patient with a biopsy proven IgAN will reach ESKD and (II) if

An expert system based on principal component analysis, artificial immune system and fuzzy k-NN for diagnosis of valvular heart diseases.

In the last two decades, the use of artificial intelligence methods in medical analysis is increasing. This is mainly because the effectiveness of classification and detection systems have improved a great deal to help the medical experts in diagnosing. In this work, we investigate the use of principal component analysis (PCA), artificial immune system (AIS) and fuzzy k-NN to determine the normal and abnormal heart valves from the Doppler heart sounds. The proposed heart valve disorder detection system is composed of three stages. The first stage is the pre-processing stage. Filtering, normali

Automatic segmentation of dynamic neuroreceptor single-photon emission tomography images using fuzzy clustering.

The segmentation of medical images is one of the most important steps in the analysis and quantification of imaging data. However, partial volume artefacts make accurate tissue boundary definition difficult, particularly for images with lower resolution commonly used in nuclear medicine. In single-photon emission tomography (SPET) neuroreceptor studies, areas of specific binding are usually delineated by manually drawing regions of interest (ROIs), a time-consuming and subjective process. This paper applies the technique of fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM) to automatically segment dynamic neuror

Prediction of anti-CD25 and 5-FU treatments efficacy for pancreatic cancer using a mathematical model.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly lethal disease with rising incidence and with 5-years overall survival of less than 8%. PDAC creates an immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment to escape immune-mediated eradication. Regulatory T (Treg) cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are critical components of the immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment. Shifting from tumor escape or tolerance to elimination is the major challenge in the treatment of PDAC. RESULTS: In a mathematical model, we combine distinct treatment modalities for PDAC, including 5-FU ch

A hierarchical and configurational analysis of Health Technology Assessment outcomes for cell and gene therapies.

BackgroundCell and gene therapies (CGTs) challenge traditional Health Technology Assessment (HTA), creating a fragmented global access landscape. This study identifies the determinants of CGT reimbursement outcomes by quantifying the influence of key variables and identifying the configurations leading to a positive recommendation.MethodsA dual-methodology approach was employed. We constructed a comprehensive dataset of all HTA decisions for CGTs across seven major jurisdictions between January 2017 and July 2025. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to identify independent predictors o

Deciphering the mutational pattern of skin tumours, remains a major challenge for clinicians and researchers. Over 80% of mutations in tumours are acquired, which in practice also means preventable. The surgical treatment of skin cancer and cancer in general is a worldwide, unsolved but at the same time not unsolvable problem. The problem concerning the dilemma of acquired mutations lies in the circumstance of their being allowed and subsequently treated. A more logical solution would be to eliminate the problem by making contact with mutagens in drugs public, clarifying it, studying it in det
