Digital mental health service engagement changes during Covid-19 in children and young people across the UK: Presenting concerns, service activity, and access by gender, ethnicity, and deprivation.

The adoption of digital health technologies accelerated during Covid-19, with concerns over the equity of access due to digital exclusion. The aim of this study was to assess whether service access and presenting concerns differed before and during the pandemic. Sociodemographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, and deprivation level) were examined to identify disparities in service use. To do this we utilised routinely collected service data from a text-based online mental health service for children and young people. A total of 61221 service users consented to sharing their data which repr

Sociodemographic determinants of health inequities in low back pain: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Health equity is defined as the absence of unjust and avoidable disparities in access to healthcare, quality of care, or health outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a conceptual framework that outlines the main causes of health inequalities and how these contribute to health inequities within a population. Despite the WHO implementing health equity policies to ensure accessibility and quality of healthcare services, disparities persist in the management of patients suffering from low back pain (LBP). The objective of this study was to review the existing evid

Trends in the acceptability and prevalence of intimate partner violence: Evidence from Demographic and Health Surveys, 1999-2024.

Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) is a major global public health problem. Social norms that accept IPVAW are a key correlate of its prevalence, and recent research has documented a widespread, long-term global decline in such acceptability. What societal changes underlie this normative shift and whether it is associated with a reduction in violence are not yet well understood. We analyzed Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data from 1999-2024, including responses from 1,920,105 women across 69 countries and 539,470 men across 60 countries. We calculated the annualized rate of

Sex inequities in sleep disordered breathing.

Sex-related inequities in sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) arise from the intersection of biological differences and gendered diagnostic and therapeutic frameworks. Although obstructive sleep apnea has traditionally been conceptualized as a male-predominant disorder, accumulating evidence indicates that women exhibit distinct pathophysiological mechanisms, symptom profiles and clinical trajectories that may be insufficiently captured. This structured narrative review synthesizes current evidence on sex-related biological differences and gender-based inequities in SDB and examines how male-deri

Exploring the potential role of telemedicine in the early diagnosis of skin neglected tropical diseases in remote areas in Afghanistan through the perceptions and experiences of skin NTD health professionals: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Skin neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a subset of NTDs that can lead to disability, stigmatisation and socioeconomic problems. Timely diagnosis of skin NTDs is important to prevent morbidity and mortality. The Afghan healthcare system currently faces serious challenges, including gender equity issues that complicate access to healthcare and the diagnosis of skin NTDs. This research aimed to explore the potential role of telemedicine for the diagnosis of skin NTDs in remote areas in Afghanistan. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and them…

Progress and persistent gaps in organizational climate in SAGES: a 2017-2023 survey comparison.

INTRODUCTION: The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) has long prioritized fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive professional environment. In 2017, SAGES conducted its first organizational climate survey to assess members' experiences with inclusivity, mentorship, bias, and overall satisfaction. Overall results showed a positive climate; however, several key issues were identified. A follow-up survey in 2023 was conducted to evaluate the impact of improvement initiatives and identify ongoing areas for development. METHODS: This cross-sectional study ut

Reporting of Sociodemographic and Equity-Related Factors in Emergency Department Pain Trials for Children: A Scoping Review.

CONTEXT: Effective management of children's acute pain in emergency departments (EDs) is essential, yet health disparities exist. The applicability of evidence to diverse pediatric populations depends on clear demographic reporting. The PROGRESS-Plus framework identifies social determinants of health that influence care and outcomes, but it is unclear to what extent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in pediatric ED pain management report these variables. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines the frequency and completeness of PROGRESS-Plus reporting in RCTs evaluating acute pain interventi

Gender and neglected tropical disease front-line workers: Data from 16 countries.

BACKGROUND: Delivery of preventive chemotherapy (PC) through mass drug administration (MDA) is used to control or eliminate five of the most common neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The success of an MDA campaign relies on the ability of drug distributors and their supervisors-the NTD front-line workers-to reach populations at risk of NTDs. In the past, our understanding of the demographics of these workers has been limited, but with increased access to sex-disaggregated data, we begin to explore the implications of gender and sex for the success of NTD front-line workers. Use of mathematical modelling to estimate the impact of interventions and risk factors on cardiovascular diseases in Africa: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa is increasingly threatened by the rising burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), exacerbated by limited healthcare infrastructure and constrained resources. Mathematical modelling offers a powerful tool for informing CVD prevention and control strategies; however, its application in Africa remains poorly understood. This scoping review aims to map existing modelling studies, identify methodological and contextual gaps in the literature, and inform future model development for effective decision-making. METHOD

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Intersectional Inequities in Unmet Oral Care Needs in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: There are concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated oral care inequities globally. In Sweden, declines in oral care utilization, particularly among certain regions and public clinics, suggest disproportionate impacts across population groups. Yet, the effects of the pandemic on oral care equity in Sweden remain unexplored, highlighting a critical gap in evidence to guide ongoing equity initiatives and strengthen future pandemic preparedness. OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in unmet oral care needs (UOCNs) inequities among Swedish adults before and during the pandemic, follow

'It was something that I let slip by the wayside': a qualitative study of challenges to equitable mpox vaccination in the UK outbreak response.

BACKGROUND: During the mpox outbreak in 2022-2023, inequities in vaccine access and uptake were highlighted in several countries. We present an intersectionality-informed, equity-focused approach to understand how the intersection of several characteristics, practices, and circumstances created unique and specific barriers to accessing the mpox vaccine in the UK. METHODS: The study was co-produced with community co-researchers. Between April and July 2023, semi-structured in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted online with 35 UK-based people of diverse ethnicity, sexual

LGBTQ+ cancer: priority or lip service? A qualitative content analysis of LGBTQ+ considerations in U.S. state, jurisdiction, and tribal comprehensive cancer control plans.

The National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded program, supports cancer coalitions across the United States (US) in efforts to prevent and control cancer including development of comprehensive cancer control (CCC) plans. CCC plans often focus health equity within their priorities, but it is unclear to what extent lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, plus (LGBTQ+) populations are considered in CCC plans. We qualitatively examined to what extent LGBTQ+ populations were referenced in 64 U.S. state, jurisdiction, tribes, an

A contemporary framework of health equity applied to gynecologic cancer care: A Society of Gynecologic Oncology evidenced-based review.

Health disparities are defined as the preventable difference in the burden of disease, injury, and violence, or opportunity to achieve optimal health that socially disadvantaged populations experience compared to the population as a whole. Disparities in incidence and cancer outcomes for women with gynecologic malignancies have been well described particularly for American women of Black race. The etiology of these disparities has been tied to socio-economics, cultural, educational and genetic factors. While access to high quality treatment has been primarily linked to survival from cervical a
