Study on clinical characteristics of event-related potential P300 in elderly schizophrenics and associated risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics of event-related potential P300 in elderly schizophrenics with different levels of violence and the risk factors of severe violence. METHODS: A total of 138 elderly schizophrenic patients from January 2020 to December 2021 in the First Hospital of Hebei Medical University were enrolled in this retrospective analysis. Based on the violence risk assessment, 61, 102, and 145 patients were divided into high-risk, medium-risk, and low-risk groups, respectively. Clinical characteristics, P300 latency, and P300 amplitude were compared among the

Cambodian Remarried Women Are at Risk for Domestic Violence.

Divorce rates continue to rise, especially in urban centers, which in turn contributes to increasing numbers of women who remarry. While remarriage is one of the only options for survival for divorced women, especially those from low socioeconomic status, remarriage also brings with it increased stressors of financial strain and the strain of blended families. This study tested the hypothesis that remarried women compared with first-time married and divorced women are at increased risk for domestic violence. The sample was drawn from the Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey, consisting of 1,

Exploring the Forms and Risk Factors of Domestic Violence from Afghan Immigrant Women's Point of View in Finland.

Migration, particularly forced migration, often heightens vulnerability to domestic violence (DV) due to a complex interplay of cultural, structural, and migration-related stressors. While Finland is recognized for its high standards of gender equality, it also reports high rates of domestic violence against women (DVAW), with a gap in research focusing specifically on the perceptions of Afghan immigrant women. To address this gap, this qualitative study investigates how Afghan immigrant women in Finland conceptualize DV and identify its underlying drivers. Utilizing a transnational intersecti

Sexual violence towards married women in Bangladesh.

This article explored the magnitude and nature of within marriage sexual violence against women and factors associated with physically forced sex by husbands in urban and rural Bangladesh using population-based survey data from 2001 (n = 2,702). Results showed high prevalence of lifetime sexual violence: 37 % in urban and 50 % in rural areas. An overwhelming majority of the women reported being sexually abused by husbands more than once. Logistic regression analyses revealed that six out of ten independent variables included in the models were significant. The factors positively associated wit

What are the needs of alcohol dependent patients with a history of sexual violence? A case-register study in a metropolitan region.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence has become increasingly apparent as a factor determining more complex treatment needs in patients with substance abuse. However, empirical evidence on specific patterns of differences between patients with and without a history of sexual violence is scarce. METHODS: Our sample consisted of alcohol dependent outpatients treated during a two-year period in a German metropolitan region. The analysis was based on a local case register and included all patients for whom information on lifetime sexual violence was available (N=1981; 33.4% female). In a case-control desig

Enduring vulnerabilities, relationship attributions, and couple conflict: an integrative model of the occurrence and frequency of intimate partner violence.

We tested an integrative model of individual and dyadic variables contributing to intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. Based on the vulnerability-stress-adaptation (VSA) model, we hypothesized that three "enduring vulnerabilities" (i.e., antisocial behavior, hostility, and depressive symptoms) would be associated with a "maladaptive process" (i.e., negative relationship attributions) that would lead to difficulties in couple conflict resolution, thus leading to IPV. Among a community sample of 167 heterosexual couples who were expecting their first child, we used an actor-partner inte

Profiling the plight of adolescent girls and young women: risks and pathways for intervention in rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in rural Uganda face overlapping socio-economic, educational, and behavioral vulnerabilities that heighten their risks of HIV, unintended pregnancies, gender-based violence (GBV), and other adverse health outcomes. Establishing baseline risk profiles is essential for designing targeted interventions. METHODS: This study analyzed secondary data collected through the Uganda DREAMS and OVC Tracking System (UDOTS) during program enrollment between July 2017 and December 2023 in four districts of Central Uganda (Mubende, Mityana, Luwero, and Kass…

Experiences and factors associated with transphobic hate crimes among transgender women in the San Francisco Bay Area: comparisons across race.

BACKGROUND: Trans women experience high rates of gender-based violence (GBV)-a risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Transphobic hate crimes are one such form of GBV that affect trans women. However, little is understood about factors that shape transphobic hate crimes and racial/ethnic variation in these experiences. To contextualize GBV risk and police reporting, we examined self-reported types and correlates of transphobic hate crimes by racial/ethnic group of trans women in the San Francisco Bay Area. METHODS: From 2016 to 2018, trans women participated in a longitudinal cohort study o…

Call to Action: Recommendations for Justice-Based Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder With Sexual Orientation and Gender Themes.

Gender and sexual minorities are subjected to minority stress in the form of discrimination and violence that leads to vigilance; identity concealment and discomfort; and internalized homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. These experiences are related to increased susceptibility to mental health concerns in this population. Historically, the behavioral treatment of sexual orientation (SO) and gender-themed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has inadvertently reinforced anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) stigma and contributed to minority stress in clients, t

Analysis of Image-Based Sexual Harassment and Abuse in Adolescents' Socio-Affective Relationships.

The recent reconceptualization of the phenomenon of sexting between consensual and nonconsensual represents a relevant turning point in identifying and addressing nonconsensual sexting behaviors as online sexual violence. These practices of nonconsensual sexting, therefore, represent forms of technology-facilitated sexual violence, incorporating the terms image-based sexual harassment (IBSH) and image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) to describe the distribution of self-produced sexualized images in the online sphere by adolescents, who use the online environment as their main socialization space. Working with men to prevent intimate partner violence in a conflict-affected setting: a pilot cluster randomized controlled trial in rural Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from armed conflict settings points to high levels of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. Current knowledge on how to prevent IPV is limited-especially within war-affected settings. To inform prevention programming on gender-based violence in settings affected by conflict, we evaluated the impact of adding a targeted men's intervention to a community-based prevention programme in Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: We conducted a two-armed, non-blinded cluster randomized trial in Côte d'Ivoire among 12 pair-matched communities spanning government-controlled, UN buffer, and…

Assessing feasibility of an adolescent relationship abuse prevention program for girls.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual violence and relationship abuse are prevalent among adolescents and programs promoting gender equity, reproductive justice, and healthy relationships are key strategies for prevention. While such "gender transformative" approaches appear promising for boys, they have not been evaluated among girls. This study assessed the feasibility of this community-based program, called Sisterhood 2.0, among girls in socially disadvantaged urban neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. METHODS: This quasi-experimental trial examined feasibility of Sisterhood 2.0 (n = 246), delivered

Silent crises in the COVID-19 pandemic shadow: a six-year medico-legal review of non-lethal intimate partner violence in Morocco.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major global public health concern and one of the most prevalent forms of gender-based violence, with significant consequences. This study analyzes non-lethal IPV cases reported to a medico-legal unit of Casablanca between 2018 and 2023. Data from 4,784 female victims were reviewed, focusing on socio-demographics, violence types, perpetrator relationships, and judicial involvement across the pre-COVID, peak COVID-19, and post-COVID periods. Married women represented 59.2% of victims. Physical violence predominated (83.1%), while sexual violence was underrep…

Leveraging women empowerment for better maternal health: using the SWPER index to identify key drivers of quality antenatal care in Southern Africa.

BACKGROUND: Quality antenatal care (ANC) is essential for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality; however, access remains inequitable in S … ntries. Women with high social independence (aOR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.01-1.24) and strong rejection of gender-based violence (aOR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.05-1.26) were significantly more likely to receive high-quality ANC. Early ANC initiation, ≥8 visits, and doctor-led care were the most powerful predictors of quality ANC care. CONCLUSION: Women's empowerment, particularly so …

From Virtual Rape to Meta-rape: Sexual Violence, Criminal Law and the Metaverse.

As the metaverse blurs the lines between physical and virtual realms, enhanced by haptic devices providing sensory feedback, it is poised to become integral to daily life. However, this new digital frontier is also a site for sexual violence. Women users increasingly report non-consensual touching, image-based sexual abuses and novel forms of gendered harm, often trivialised and inadequately addressed by current laws. Accordingly, this article proposes the new concept and terminology of 'meta-rape' to better capture the intense and embodied nature of these forms of sexual violence. We also pro
