BACKGROUND: The genetic structure of each population can be explained according to the frequency of genes and their allelic variants, genotypes, and phenotypes.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the genetic heterogeneity of the working-age population from the area of Sarajevo Canton based on classic genetic markers. The studied parameters of genetic heterogeneity were assessed by the relative frequency of the recessive allele for static-morphological traits (earlobe shape, chin shape, hairiness of the middle digital phalanx, bending of the distal phalanx of the little finger and digital index) and dynami

The zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi parasite is a growing public health concern in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia, where elimination of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria has been the focus of control efforts. Understanding of the genetic diversity of P. knowlesi parasites can provide insights into its evolution, population structure, diagnostics, transmission dynamics, and the emergence of drug resistance. Previous work has revealed that P. knowlesi fall into three main sub-populations distinguished by a combination of geographical location and macaque host (Macaca fascicularis and M. ne

Spatially explicit population genetic models have long been developed, yet have rarely been used to test hypotheses about the spatial distribution of genetic diversity or the genetic divergence between populations. Here, we use spatially explicit coalescence simulations to explore the properties of the island and the two-dimensional stepping stone models under a wide range of scenarios with spatio-temporal variation in deme size. We avoid the simulation of genetic data, using the fact that under the studied models, summary statistics of genetic diversity and divergence can be approximated from

Following almost 10 years of no reported cases, Guinea worm disease (GWD or dracunculiasis) reemerged in Chad in 2010 with peculiar epidemiological patterns and unprecedented prevalence of infection among non-human hosts, particularly domestic dogs. Since 2014, animal infections with Guinea worms have also been observed in the other three countries with endemic transmission (Ethiopia, Mali, and South Sudan), causing concern and generating interest in the parasites' true taxonomic identity and population genetics. We present the first extensive population genetic data for Guinea worm, investiga

The extent of gene flow during the range expansion of non-native species influences the amount of genetic diversity retained in expanding populations. Here, we analyse the population genetic structure of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in north-eastern and central Europe. This invasive species is of management concern because it is highly susceptible to fox rabies and an important secondary host of the virus. We hypothesized that the large number of introduced animals and the species' dispersal capabilities led to high population connectivity and maintenance of genetic diversity thr

Detecting potential changes in genetic diversity in schistosome populations following chemotherapy with praziquantel (PZQ) is crucial if we are to fully understand the impact of such chemotherapy with respect to the potential emergence of resistance and/or other evolutionary outcomes of interventions. Doing so by implementing effective, and cost-efficient sampling protocols will help to optimise time and financial resources, particularly relevant to a disease such as schistosomiasis currently reliant on a single available drug. Here we explore the effect on measures of parasite genetic diversi

Wohlfahrt's wound myiasis fly, Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), is the most important cause of traumatic myiasis in the southern Palaearctic region. Larval stages are obligate parasites and the wounds caused by infestations are very similar to those caused by Old and New World screwworm flies. During the last decade, W. magnifica appears to have expanded its range to parts of northern and central Morocco, and to Crete, Greece. Specimens of W. magnifica were collected in Morocco and Crete either as larvae (preserved in 80% ethanol) or as adults (dry-pinned). Comparison

Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are responsible globally for almost one million cryptococcosis cases yearly, mostly in immunocompromised patients, such as those living with HIV. Infections due to C. gattii have mainly been described in tropical and subtropical regions, but its adaptation to temperate regions was crucial in the species evolution and highlighted the importance of this pathogenic yeast in the context of disease. Cryptococcus gattii molecular type VGII has come to the forefront in connection with an on-going emergence in the Pacific North West of North America. Tak

BACKGROUND: Hypertension continues to be a major public health issue in India, with increasing incidence associated with both lifestyle factors and genetic susceptibility. Despite genome-wide association studies identifying several loci related with blood pressure worldwide, there is a paucity of integration of these findings within the genetically varied Indian setting.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to compile current information on single-nucleotide polymorphisms linked to hypertension in Indian communities and to elucidate their biological significance by bioinformatics analysis.

Urbanisation influences ecological and evolutionary processes, including gene flow and survival. Understanding how genetic and demographic rates respond to urbanisation is therefore essential for predicting and managing wildlife viability in human-dominated landscapes. We tested whether population genetic diversity, genetic structure, and apparent survival of Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) vary in concert along an urbanisation gradient. We combined a multi-year capture-mark-recapture study with microsatellite-based population genetic analyses at three sites in Berlin, Germany, repre

Background: The Pech ethnic group, comprising approximately 6024 individuals in northeastern Honduras, represents one of the country's smallest indigenous communities with a rich cultural heritage extending to pre-Columbian times. Despite their historical significance, no population genetic studies have been conducted on this group, and population-specific databases are essential for accurate forensic applications. Methods: Allele frequencies for 23 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci were determined in 100 unrelated Pech individuals (58 females, 42 males) from communities in the departme

Genetic diversity loss due to anthropogenic factors is occurring rapidly on a global scale, putting many species at risk of extirpation and extinction. Different management strategies have been developed to slow this loss; however, it is often unknown whether these strategies reach their intended goals. In this study, we evaluate population structure and changes in nucleotide diversity (π) in isolated populations of Bonneville cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii utah) from the Snake Range (Nevada, USA). Starting in the 1990s, three of these populations were used to reestablish populations in

In the expansive African region, goats display a diverse array of breeds that have evolved over time to adapt to varying local climates and environments. This study involved the analysis of 1591 samples, including 63 domestic breeds and 164 individuals from wild related species, focusing on genetic diversity, population structure, gene flow, selective signals, and landscape genomics. Our findings revealed lower genetic diversity in wild related species, particularly in the mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus). Gene flow was observed between wild Yura goats and North African populations. Introgr

Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for training and individual-level cohorts for fine-tuning are essential for constructing predictive polygenic risk score (PRS) models. However, the relatively low representation of admixed populations in both GWAS summary statistics and individual-level datasets hinders the development of PRSs and equitable clinical translation for admixed populations. Prior work indicates that the most informative PRS model for a genetically homogeneous sample varies linearly in an ancestry continuum space. Guided by these observations, we introduce a ge

The origin and maintenance of marine biodiversity remain poorly understood, particularly in highly connected oceanic environments where extensive dispersal is expected to limit population differentiation. Evolutionary processes driving population divergence or speciation frequently depend on a proper knowledge of species' life history and its interaction with major environmental variables. Using a genome-wide approach, we investigated the global population structure of the cosmopolitan pelagic fish Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758, generating a dataset of 8.7 million SNPs and complete mitoch

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer, but its genetic architecture has not been fully characterized, particularly in Asian populations. Here, we perform a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of 33,712 RCC cases and 845,786 controls, including individuals of East Asian (5,313 cases and 96,912 controls), European (25,890 cases and 743,585 controls), African American (897 cases and 3,109 controls), and Latin American ancestry (1,612 cases and 2,180 controls), which unveils 10 novel RCC-associated loci and a Chinese-specific locus at 12p13.33. Genetic variation and lived experiences shape how our hearts respond to chronic stress and development of heart failure, manifested as compromised pumping function and abnormal hemodynamics. The hallmark of heart failure etiology is excessive stress signals followed by maladaptive structural, electrical, and functional changes to the heart muscle, also known as cardiac remodeling. The specific genetic mechanisms which underly such phenomenon, however, are still unclear, due in part to difficulties in accounting for environmental effects in human population studies. To overcome this challenge,

BACKGROUND: Physiologic newborn hearing screening (NBHS) has several weaknesses requiring improvement. Studies have explored variant-based genetic NBHS as a complement to physiologic NBHS. However, this genetic NBHS strategy has fundamental limitations that challenge logistics. METHODS: Given findings that a small set of genes accounts for the majority of genetic etiologies of hearing loss (HL), we designed a gene-based genetic NBHS strategy that screens for genes instead of limited variants, targeting the coding regions of twelve HL-related genes and the aminoglycoside-induced HL risk gene MT

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) represent a heterogenous group of around 550 genetic disorders impairing the development and/or function of the immune system. Affected patients typically present with recurrent and/or opportunistic infections, often co-occurring with additional manifestations such as autoimmunity, atopy, and malignancy. Despite major advances in the field, IEI remain overlooked, particularly in underrepresented populations. In Lebanon, the burden of autosomal recessive diseases including IEI is significant due to consanguinity, yet poorly characterized. This study assesses the

Elucidating the genetic contributions to Parkinson's disease aetiology across diverse ancestries is a critical priority for the development of targeted therapies in a global context. We conducted the largest sequencing characterization of potentially disease-causing, protein-altering and splicing mutations in 710 cases and 11 827 controls from genetically predicted African or African admixed ancestries. We explored copy number variants (CNVs) and runs of homozygosity in prioritized early onset and familial cases. Our study identified rare GBA1 coding variants to be the most frequent mutations
