Mass fluxes of dissolved arsenic discharging to the Meghna River are sufficient to account for the mass of arsenic in riverbank sediments.

Shallow (<30 m) reducing groundwater commonly contains abundant dissolved arsenic (As) in Bangladesh. We hypothesize that dissolved As in iron (Fe)-rich groundwater discharging to rivers is trapped onto Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides which precipitate in shallow riverbank sediments under the influence of tidal fluctuations. Therefore, the goal of this study is to compare the calculated mass of sediment-bound As that would be sequestered from dissolved groundwater As that discharges through riverbanks of the Meghna River to the observed mass of As trapped within riverbank sediments. To calculate groundw

Insights into Bacterial Community Structure and Metabolic Diversity of Mercury-Contaminated Sediments from Hyeongsan River, Pohang, South Korea.

This study investigated the bacterial community structure and metabolic diversity and their relationship with Hg and other environmental variables in sediments collected from different locations (HSR-1-HSR-6) in the Hyeongsan River estuary in South Korea. The results showed that the highest total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations were in HSR-2, with values of 4585.3 µg/kg and 13.4 µg/kg, respectively. The lowest THg (31.9 µg/kg) and MeHg (0.1 µg/kg) concentrations were found in HSR-1. Sulfate and organic matter (OM) were more influential environmental variables, revealing a

Impacts of Forest Fire Ash on Aquatic Mercury Cycling.

Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous contaminant in the environment and its methylated form, methylmercury (MeHg), poses a worldwide health concern for humans and wildlife, primarily through fish consumption. Global production of forest fire ash, derived from wildfires and prescribed burns, is rapidly increasing due to a warming climate, but their interactions with aqueous and sedimentary Hg are poorly understood. Herein, we compared the differences of wildfire ash with activated carbon and biochar on the sorption of aqueous inorganic Hg and sedimentary Hg methylation. Sorption of aqueous inorganic Hg

Impact of sulfur-impregnated biochar amendment on microbial communities and mercury methylation in contaminated sediment.

S-impregnation of biochar through elemental S streaming is known to increase its sorption performance against Hg and methyl mercury (MeHg). However, the effects of %S-loading on biochar's mechanism and sorption capacities for MeHg, and its consequent impact when used as an amendment material for Hg-contaminated sediments, are poorly understood, and thus, were investigated in this work. Our results showed that a minimum sulfur loading of 1% was the most effective in reducing MeHg levels in sediments. At higher %S-loading (3-20%), the reduction in surface area, pore blockage due to unreacted sul

Assessment of heavy metal pollution in surface sediments of the Chishui River Basin, China.

Accumulated heavy metals in surface sediments are released into the aquatic environment, causing secondary contamination of the hydrosphere, and increasing the risks to human health. To evaluate the pollution characteristics of heavy metals in the sediments of the Chishui River Basin, in the present study, the concentrations of five heavy metals in surface sediments of the Chishui River Basin in China were investigated using the geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, and potential ecological risk indexes. These indexes evaluated the degree of contamination and the influence of human act

The ecotoxicology of marine tributyltin (TBT) hotspots: A review.

Tributyltin (TBT) was widely used as a highly efficient biocide in antifouling paints for ship and boat hulls. Eventually, TBT containing paints became globally banned when TBT was found to cause widespread contamination and non-target adverse effects in sensitive species, with induced pseudohermaphroditism in female neogastropods (imposex) being the best-known example. In this review, we address the history and the status of knowledge regarding TBT pollution and marine TBT hotspots, with a special emphasis on the Norwegian coastline. The review also presents a brief update on knowledge of TBT

Antibiotics florfenicol and flumequine in the water column and sediments of Puyuhuapi Fjord, Chilean Patagonia.

Chile is a major global producer of farmed salmon in the fjords of Patagonia, and therefore a major consumer of antibiotics. We tested whether the antibiotics florfenicol and flumequine persisted in the large Puyuhuapi Fjord after the six months following mandatory concerted treatment by all salmon farms present in the fjord. Antibiotics were detected in 26% of analyzed samples, but only within the particulate phase, with concentrations of florfenicol of up to 23.1 ng L-1, where detected. Flumequine was present in one sample at trace concentration, and neither antibiotic was detected in the di

Application of environmental DNA for assessment of contamination downstream of a legacy base metal mine.

Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) from legacy mines can negatively impact the biota in sediments and waters for tens of kilometers downstream. Here we used environmental (e)DNA metabarcoding to assess the impacts of metal contaminants on biota in sediment and water downstream of a legacy base metal sulfide mine in southeastern Australia, as exemplar of similar mines elsewhere. Concentrations of metals in water were below Australian water quality guideline values at 20 km downstream for copper (Cu), 40 km downstream for zinc (Zn) and 10 km downstream for lead (Pb). Sediment metal concentrations were bel

Distribution of black carbon and PAHs in sediments of Peninsular Malaysia.

Concentrations, sources and interactions between black carbon (BC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in 42 sediment samples collected from riverine, coastal and shelf areas in Peninsular Malaysia. The concentrations of BC measured by benzene polycarboxylic acid (BPCA) method and PAHs showed broad spatial variations between the relatively pristine environment of the East coast and developed environment of the West and South coast ranging from 0.02 to 0.36% dw and 57.7 ng g-1 dw to 19,300 ng g-1 dw, respectively. Among diagnostic ratios of PAHs, the ratios of Ant/(Ant

The decomposition of macrozoobenthos induces large releases of phosphorus from sediments.

Lake eutrophication and algal blooms may result in the mortality of macrozoobenthos. However, it is still not clear how macrozoobenthos decomposition affect phosphorus (P) mobility in sediments. High-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique were used in this study to assess the dissolved organic matter (DOM), dissolved/DGT-labile iron (Fe), P, and sulfur (S(-II)) profiles at a millimeter resolution. The decomposition of Bellamya aeruginosa significantly increased the internal loading of sediments P. The Fe(III) and sulfate were reduced under ana

Contrasting effect of zirconium-, iron-, and zirconium/iron-modified attapulgites capping and amendment on phosphorus mobilization in sediment.

In this research, the sorption characteristics and mechanism of phosphate on zirconium-modified attapulgite (Zr-ATP), iron-modified attapulgite (Fe-ATP), and zirconium/iron co-modified attapulgite (Zr/Fe-ATP) prepared by a simple impregnation method were studied, and the impacts of Zr-ATP, Fe-ATP, and Zr/Fe-ATP amendment and capping on the migration of phosphorus (P) from sediments to overlying waters were investigated. The results showed that Zr-ATP and Zr/Fe-ATP possessed stronger adsorption ability for phosphate in aqueous solution than Fe-ATP. The ligand replacement of the hydroxyl group w

Effects of cathode coating materials and operational time on the mercury removal performance of electrokinetic remediation system for marine sediment.

Electrokinetic remediation (EK) is a promising in-situ technique for removing mercury (Hg) from contaminated sites; yet it demands long operational periods when conventional electrodes are used. Herein, we investigate the effectiveness of lab-prepared cathodes (Cu foam coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or manganese oxide (MnO2)) to enhance Hg removal rates from sediment by EK. Although short term (2 h) Hg removal rates were insignificantly different (p-value > 0.05) when using the uncoated and coated Cu foam cathodes, long term (60 h) operations saw greater Hg removal by coated Cu foam

Inorganic and methylated mercury dynamics in estuarine water of a salt marsh in Massachusetts, USA.

Salt marsh estuaries serve as sources and sinks for nutrients and elements to and from estuarine water, which enhances and alleviates watershed fluxes to the coastal ocean. We assessed sources and sinks of mercury in the intertidal Plum Island Sound estuary in Massachusetts, the largest salt marsh estuary of New England, using 25-km spatial water sampling transects. Across all seasons, dissolved (FHg) and total (THg) mercury concentrations in estuarine water were highest and strongly enhanced in upper marshes (1.31 ± 0.20 ng L-1 and 6.56 ± 3.70 ng L-1, respectively), compared to riverine Hg co

Seasonal variation of potentially toxic metal contamination in Yamuna riverine ecosystem, Delhi, India.

The River Yamuna in Delhi region, the National Capital Territory (NCT) of India, carries potentially toxic metals such as Cr, Pb, Mn, Mg, Hg, Fe and Zn. These contaminants are discharged mainly from industrial wastes, agricultural and household activities and domestic sewage. A total of 12 stations (2.5 to 3.5 km apart from each other) were selected for the study, covering the upstream and downstream areas of river Yamuna in Delhi. The investigated sites were evaluated for significant difference between upstream and downstream locations of river Yamuna in three different time periods (June, Oc

Assessment of bottom sediment quality in Niterói harbor (Brazil, South America) through ecological indexes concerning nutrients and trace metals.

Bottom sediment quality from the Niterói harbor at Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was evaluated based on concentrations of organic phosphorus (OP) and inorganic phosphorus (IP) and bioavailability of trace metals through BCR fractionation analysis (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cd). The study area revealed elevated concentrations of fine sediments and organic matter (TOC: 2.26-7.31%). OP presented extremely elevated concentrations between 0.57 and 47.04 μmol/g, whereas IP reached a maximum concentration of 4.99 μmol/g. The anoxic bottom at the study area was confirmed by high TOC/OP values in mo

Microbial iron reduction enhances in-situ control of biogenic hydrogen sulfide by FeOOH granules in sediments of polluted urban waters.

This paper discusses the abiotic and biotic processes in the in-situ control of biogenic hydrogen sulfide generated from microbial sulfate reduction by ferric (FeIII) (hydr)oxides (FeOOH) granules in the sediments of polluted urban waters. Granular ferric hydroxide (GFH, β-FeOOH) and granular ferric oxide (GFO, α-FeOOH) dosed in the organic- and sulfate-rich sediments had 180% and 19% higher sulfide removal capacities than those used for the purely abiotic removal of dissolved sulfide, respectively. The enhancement was attributable to the involvement of the biotic pathways, besides the abiotic

Controls on iron(II) fluxes into waterways impacted by acid mine drainage: A Damköhler analysis of groundwater seepage and iron kinetics.

When acidic groundwater flows into an aquatic system the sediment water interface (SWI) acts as a transition zone between the groundwater and lake water, and often exhibits strong physical and biogeochemical gradients. The fate of groundwater-borne solutes, such as Fe(II), is determined by the balance between the exposure time during transport across the SWI and the reaction time within the SWI, however the relative role of groundwater seepage rates and iron kinetics on acidity generation in lakes is unknown. Porewater seepage velocities, porewater chemical profiles, and limnological data were

Effects of different dosing modes of calcium nitrate on P locking in sediment and nutrient concentrations in waters.

Sediment is an endogenous pollution source, which often leads water systems to eutrophication due to the release of nutrients, especially phosphorus (P). Calcium nitrate (CN) was dosed to the water systems under different modes to control P release from the sediments in this study. A 63-day static laboratory test was conducted to explore the effects of intermittent dosing and one-time dosing modes of CN on P locking in the sediment and the concentrations of nitrogen (N) and P in waters. Results showed that 89% total phosphorus (TP) in the overlying water and 91% TP in the interstitial water of

Measuring Phosphorus Release in Laboratory Microcosms for Water Quality Assessment.

Phosphorus (P) is a critical limiting nutrient in agroecosystems requiring careful management to reduce transport risk to aquatic environments. Routine laboratory measures of P bioavailability are based on chemical extractions performed on dried samples under oxidizing conditions. While useful, these tests are limited with respect to characterizing P release under prolonged water saturation. Labile orthophosphate bound to oxidized iron and other metals can rapidly desorb to solution in reducing environments, increasing P mobilization risk to surface runoff and groundwater. To better quantify P

Distribution and relationship between antimicrobial resistance genes and heavy metals in surface sediments of Taihu Lake, China.

Heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and other wastes released into the environment can significantly influence environmental antibiotic resistance. We investigated the occurrence of 22 antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and 10 heavy metal concentrations, and the relationship between ARGs and heavy metals in surface sediment from seven sites of Lake Taihu. The results showed significant correlations (p < 0.05) between sediment ARG levels, especially for tetracycline and sulfonamides (e.g., tet(A), tet(D), tet(E), tet(O), sul1, sul2 and int-1) and specific heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Zn, among o
