Stronger neural response to canonical finger-number configurations in deaf compared to hearing adults revealed by FPVS-EEG.

The linguistic counting system of deaf signers consists of a manual counting format that uses specific structures for number words. Interestingly, the number signs from 1 to 4 in the Belgian sign languages correspond to the finger-montring habits of hearing individuals. These hand configurations could therefore be considered as signs (i.e., part of a language system) for deaf, while they would simply be number gestures (not linguistic) for hearing controls. A Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation design was used with electroencephalography recordings to examine whether these finger-number configura…

Is an armed society a polite society? Guns and road rage.

BACKGROUND: While concerns about road rage have grown over the past decade, states have made it easier for motorists to carry firearms in their vehicles. Are motorists with guns in the car more or less likely to engage in hostile and aggressive behavior? METHODS: Data come from a 2004 national random digit dial survey of over 2,400 licensed drivers. Respondents were asked whether, in the past year, they (1) made obscene or rude gestures at another motorist, (2) aggressively followed another vehicle too closely, and (3) were victims of such hostile behaviors. RESULTS: Seventeen percent admitt…

[Structural and functional neuroimaging of the pathophysiology of apraxia].

A better understanding of the neural bases of apraxia is an important prerequisite to develop new therapeutic strategies for the disabling apraxic deficits after left-hemisphere stroke, like disturbed imitation of gestures, deficient pantomime, and object use deficits. Recently, functional and structural imaging methods allowed deeper insights into the pathophysiology of apraxia: While apraxic object use deficits result from the dysfunction of an extended fronto-parietal network within the left hemisphere, pantomime deficits are caused by impaired functioning of the left inferior frontal corte…

Assistive communication system using deep sparse autoencoder with feature learning to assist people with hearing disabilities.

Hearing loss is a sensory damage, a hidden disability that affects numerous adults globally. However, gesture recognition plays a significant role in overcoming several problems and challenges in human life, particularly for persons with hearing impairments and speech disabilities. The ability of machines to comprehend human actions and interpret sensory data is exploited across a wide range of applications. Automatic gesture recognition is used to present a response in a computerised learning environment to practice sign language for the deaf community. Deaf people worldwide face challenges c

Comparing online wrist and forearm EMG-based control using a rhythm game-inspired evaluation environment.

Objective. The use of electromyogram (EMG) signals recorded from the wrist is emerging as a desirable input modality for human-machine intera … st EMG-based control is comparable to that of forearm EMG when using traditional prosthesis control gestures and can even be better when using fine finger gestures. Additionally, the results suggest that as the difficulty of the environment increased, the online metrics and their correlation to the offline metrics decreased, highlighting the importance of …

Concurrent Predictors of Supplementary Sign Use in School-Aged Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Manual sign is a common alternative mode of communication taught to children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Gesture use is positively related to later increases in vocabulary and syntactic complexity in typical development, but there is little evidence supporting the use of manual sign for children with CAS. We sought to identify the communicative functions of signs and gestures produced by children with CAS and to identify concurrent factors suggesting which children are more likely to benefit from sign-supported speech intervention. METHOD: Measures of receptive and expres…

Masculinity, femininity, and angry drivers: Masculinity and femininity as moderators between driver anger and anger expression style among young drivers.

Driver anger and its expression are among the most studied topics in traffic safety literature. However, the function of gender roles, i.e., masculinity and femininity, in driving anger experience and expression has remained mainly unexplored. The present study investigates the association between driving anger and gender roles on the expression of anger among young drivers. Three hundred seventy-nine young drivers filled a questionnaire including the Driving Anger Scale, Bem Sex Roles Inventory, Driving Anger Expression Inventory, and demographic information. Moderated regression analyses sho

A Pilot Study on Co-located EMG and FMG Transient-phase Signal Fusion Approach for Hand Motion Characterization.

Multimodal sensor combinations can improve the potential of human-machine control systems. However, the majority of studies focus on a single modality, either Electromyography (EMG) or Force myography (FMG). In such studies, more effort is made towards utilizing the steady phase of the signal ignoring the transient-phase due to its non-stationarity. Thus, in this work, we attempt to leverage the combination of EMG and FMG in characterizing hand gestures by examining the potential of transient-phase signal. To effectively combine both signals, an attention mechanism was introduced to fuse time-…

Motor strength as a feature of concepts and visual representations.

In this article, we define motor strength as the extent to which a concept is associated with body movements and the motor system that guides body movements. We extend this notion to one of the features of visual representations of some concepts and discuss the role of the motor system in understanding concepts and visual representations that have a significant degree of motor strength. It is suggested that when a concept is understood in its literal sense, the employment of the motor system and gestures in processing that concept depends on its degree of motor strength. If a concept is unders…

Post-traumatic mutism.

We report on the infrequent verbalisation disorder called "post-traumatic mutism" observed in 12 subjects with severe traumatic head injuries. These patients during the recovery of their conditions showed for a certain period a speechlessness even though some of them could communicate through gestures and writing. The nature and the possible mechanism of the disorder are discussed.

How did vocal communication come to dominate human language? A view from the womb.

Whether human language evolved via a gestural or a vocal route remains an unresolved and contentious issue. Given the existence of two preconditions-a "language faculty" and the capacity for imitative learning both vocally and manually-there is no compelling evidence for gesture being inherently inferior to vocalization as a mode of linguistic expression; indeed, signed languages are capable of the same expressive range as spoken ones. Here, we revisit this conundrum, championing recent methodological advances in human neuroimaging (specifically, in utero functional magnetic resonance imaging)

Death due to delirium: a case of a self-cut hemodialysis dialysis catheter - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric conditions such as depression, delirium and cognitive impairment are common in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and individuals suffering from ESKD are more likely to commit suicide than members of the general population. Self-harm gestures are not infrequent for ESKD patients suffering from depression, but not well described in other conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of self-harm in a patient with ESKD suffering from acute delirium. A man in his mid-seventies was admitted with fungal peritoneal dialysis (PD) associated peritonitis. On …

Evidence for an attraction account of closing-in behaviour.

"Closing-in behaviour" (CIB) is a phenomenon observed on copying and imitation tasks, in which the copy is made inappropriately close to or on top of the model. CIB is classified clinically as a manifestation of constructional apraxia (CA), but its underlying causes are not understood. Compensation hypotheses propose that CIB is a strategic adaptation to underlying deficits in visuospatial and/or memory functions. The attraction hypothesis suggests that CIB reflects a primitive default behaviour in which the acting hand is drawn towards the focus of visual attention. We tested between these hy

Apperceptive visual agnosia: a case study.

A man with an infarction of his inferior temporal and occipital association cortex bilaterally, which spared primary visual cortex, had impaired visual recognition of objects, faces, colors, words, and gestures. Analysis of visual function indicated that the recognition failures resulted from an agnosia, rather than elemental visual impairment. Whereas his impairment of gesture recognition appeared to be related to an associative agnosia, his inability to recognize objects was related to an apperceptive agnosia. There may be four subtypes of apperceptive agnosia: one where the internal object …
