OBJECTIVE: Treatment of osteomyelitis, in of itself, is challenging but is further complicated by attendant bone infections. The management of bone infection, and bone rebuilding may be assisted by the use of bioactive glasses (BAGs) which have antimicrobial and osteo-stimulative proprieties. However, this clinical application and potential complications associated with BAGs (e.g., BAG S53P4), are poorly defined. PURPOSE: To report the occurrence of a novel mechanism of IOFB with hot, liquefied glass injury.
METHODS: Retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Two patients suffered an injury to their eye with hot, liquefied glass. The ocular findings included a single scleral entry wound with multiple glass fragments located inside the eye. Fragments were found embedded in the retina, as well as mobile on the retinal surface.

In stapedotomy, augmentation of the long process of the incus is necessary when the structure is too short or thin or when the bone has been eroded to the point that it is not possible to satisfactorily attach a piston prosthesis to it. TiO2 loading on woven glass fabric is applied to treat nitrogen oxides (NOx) by photocatalytic oxidation (PCO). In this paper, the PCO behavior of NO at high concentrations was studied by PCO of NOx at source levels (20-168 ppm). The PCO efficiency reached 27% in this experiment, while the inlet NOx concentration was 168 ppm (147 ppm NO). Cells of Amycolatopsis mediterranei CBS 42575 were immobilized on glass wool for the production of rifamycins B and SV. Glass wool (CORNING type) of 8 microns in diameter has a better entrapment capacity for microbial cells of microorganism than the other types of glass wool used. We treated three patients with severe ocular injuries caused by exploding glass bottles containing a mixture of dry ice chips and water. One patient had a corneal laceration and traumatic cataract with several retained intraocular glass fragments. The second had a scleral laceration without corneal or lenticular involvement. The third suffered a corneal-scleral laceration, with a total retinal detachment. Following surgery, two patients recovered 20/20 vision; the third patient regained only light perception.
