A palatal augmentation prosthesis (PAP) is used in postoperative patients with oral cancer as an intraoral appliance. The purpose of this study was to use ultrasound imaging to evaluate the effects of a PAP on lingual movement dynamics when postoperative patients with oral cancer swallowed food while wearing a PAP and to elucidate the effectiveness of the PAP. In the past 18 years 34 patients (21 males and 13 females) with carcinoma of the tongue were treated in the author's clinic. Neck dissection is routine for the management of cancers of the head and neck. Knowledge of anatomical variants in the carotid artery system at various levels of dissection should prevent inadvertent injury to major blood vessels, which can cause massive bleeding. We report a rare 180° sharp bend in the cervical course of the internal carotid artery at level II, which we found during a modified neck dissection.

Communications between the transverse cervical nerve (C2 and 3) and the cervical branch of the facial nerve have been reported. We describe a case in which the transverse cervical nerve joined the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. It was found during a selective neck dissection and to our knowledge is the first report of such a communication. We discuss the clinical relevance particularly in relation to confusion with the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve when operating in the submandibular region.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the two-dimensional (2D) characteristics of flaps necessary to create three-dimensional (3D) tongue anatomy.
METHODS: Dissection of 11 fresh, nonpreserved human cadavers was performed. Six defects in each were created: total tongue, total oral tongue, hemiglossectomy, oral hemiglossectomy, total base of tongue, and hemi-base of tongue.
