Chrisanol therapy was provided to 172 men suffering from Reiter's disease, having histocompatibility antigen B35 and its combination with B27 as well as B17 and B11 indicating that the articular syndrome may run a persistent and grave course. Chrisanol therapy brought about a decrease of the activity of complement, lysozyme, bactericidal activity of blood serum, a reduction of the content of serum IgG, and autoimmune reactions parameters. Chrisanol therapy was tolerated well. The ten-year follow-up revealed relapses in 8.3% of the patients.

Herein, we describe a gold(I)-catalyzed intermolecular formal [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of a carbonyl compound and a propiolate. A series of highly substituted 2H-pyrans are accessed regioselectively from acyclic and cyclic ketones and aldehydes with various substituted propiolates using Ph3PAuCl (0.1-1 mol %) with two distinct metal triflate additives [0.75-7.5 mol %; In(OTf)3/Cu(OTf)2 for ketones, Bi(OTf)3/Hf(OTf)4 for aldehydes]. This method should provide an opportunity for further development of synthetic access to other heterocyclic compounds.

An efficient method that can be used to control the optical anisotropy of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots by coupling to the surface plasmon polariton resonance of a metal grating has been demonstrated. The patient, a 34-year-old Japanese woman who noticed worsening of her rash after using topical corticosteroid preparations on her neck, was patch tested for both commercial preparations and corticosteroids themselves. The patch test results revealed that she had a contact allergy to gold, oxytetracycline, and 2 types of corticosteroid (acetonides and esters) in 7 compounds (betamethasone valerate and dipropionate, hydrocortisone butyrate and hydrocortisone butyrate propionate, amcinonide, budesonide, and fluocinonide).

A pityriasis rosea-like eruption can occur as a consequence of treatments with gold compounds and captopril. It has rarely been reported to have an association with vaccinations such as smallpox, BCG, hepatitis B, and diphtheria toxoid. It has not previously been documented to develop after pneumococcal vaccination. The role of potassium in the formation of synthetic eumelanin aggregates is investigated by atomic force microscopy and soft-X-ray spectroscopy. Control over the thin film granularity is achieved by using K salts, in both drop casting and electrodeposition of eumelanin thin films. An aqueous surfactant-based colloidal chemical method is reported for the synthesis of anisotropic noble-metal nanoparticles on the milligram to multigram scale. Fine control of the nucleation-growth kinetics and rodlike micelle-induced breaking of symmetry at the early stage of particle growth are responsible for high-quality anisotropic nanoparticles. Near-monodisperse gold and silver nanorods, spheroids, nanowires, platelets, or cubes of 4-50 nm dimension and controllable aspect ratio can be prepared. The method may also be extended to semiconductor systems.

A novel approach for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) based on chemical ionization by Au+ ions has been proposed. The ionization is carried out in a commercially available dual sub-atmospheric pressure MALDI/ESI interface without any modifications. The Au+ ions are generated by laser ablation of a gold nanolayer with the MALDI laser, and VOCs are infused via the ESI capillary.
