A Gram-stain-positive, obligately anaerobic, short rod, designated strain HHRM1715(T), was isolated from the blood of a patient with Fournier's gangrene, complicated by sepsis. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain HHRM1715(T) was shown to belong to the genus Atopobium and was most closely related to Atopobium minutum (95 % similarity). The results of 16S rRNA-gene-based phylogenetic analysis, cellular fatty acid analysis and differential biochemical tests, showed that strain HHRM1715(T) represented a novel species of the genus Atopobium. We therefore describe Atopobium delta

Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax, is a gram-positive, spore-forming rod, with colonies exhibiting a unique ground-glass appearance, and lacking hemolysis and motility. In addition to these phenotypes, several others traits are characteristic of B. anthracis such as susceptibility to gamma phage, the presence of two virulence plasmids (pX01 and pX02), and specific cell wall and capsular antigens that are commonly detected by direct fluorescent-antibody assays. We report on the identification and characterization of 14 Bacillus megaterium and four Bacillus sp. clinical isolat

INTRODUCTION: Propionibacterium acnes is a gram-positive pleomorphic rod-shaped anaerobic saprophyte of the skin, mouth and upper respiratory tract. Although associated with acne vulgaris, it is otherwise reported as a human pathogen only rarely, in various infections, notably cutaneous and osteoarticular, and in endocarditis. We report here a case of bilateral P. acnes-abscessed adenitis of the inguinal folds.
CASE: A 32 year-old man presented with inguinal lymph nodes that had progressively and bilaterally reddened and become painful, with fistulation of the skin and pus. Culture of a surgi

Botulinum toxin (BTX), a neurotoxin produced by the gram-positive, rod-shaped anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum, was isolated in 1897 by Belgian scientist Professor Pierre Emile van Ermengem. BTX acts by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. As a result of this chemodenervation, a temporary flaccid paralysis ensues. Different medical disciplines have taken advantage of this temporary paralysis to treat muscular hypercontraction. BTX was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1989 for use in patients with strabismus and blepharospasm. Sin

Although articular complications are common following renal transplantation, septic arthritis is not frequent. Previous bacterial infection in an another site is a consistent finding and the knee is the most often affected joint. We present a 30-year-old female renal transplant recipient with recurrent pulmonary infiltrates preceding septic arthritis of her left knee. Cultures of the aspirated synovial fluid yielded a gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium later identified as Nocardia asteroides. The patient was treated with oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole without any side effect. Nocardia is

A 6-year-old Doberman bitch was presented for an acute onset of circling, hemiparesis and depression. Clinical examination revealed conjunctivitis, abdominal pain, anaemia, decreased facial sensation, decreased jaw, tongue and pharyngeal tone, decreased conscious proprioception, decreased flexor withdrawal reflexes, and abnormal hemiwalking and hemistanding. Pancytopaenia was evident on haematological evaluation. Bone marrow cytology revealed a bacterial infection. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis was normal. Despite antibiotic treatment, the dog died. On autopsy, widespread multifocal inflammator

Bloodstream infections are associated with high mortality rates because of the probable manifestation of sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock(1). Therefore, rapid administration of adequate antibiotic therapy is of foremost importance in the treatment of bloodstream infections. The critical element in this process is timing, heavily dependent on the results of bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Both of these parameters are routinely obtained by culture-based testing, which is time-consuming and takes on average 24-48 hours(2, 4). The aim of the study was to devel

Neural signs (torticollis, drowsiness) and mortality were observed in five chickens of a native chicken flock (reared for meat) that included 450 male birds on a farm that had 2300 native chickens and 1120 layers. Histologic lesions were observed in the medulla oblongata, optic lobe, cerebellum, and spinal cord of the affected birds. The lesions, which were most severe in the medulla oblongata, were massive abscesses with rarefaction (demyelination and malacia) of the parenchyma with gram-positive bacteria. The degenerative and necrotic areas were characterized by fibrin thrombosis, hemorrhage

Actinomyces neuii is a gram-positive, non-branching, rod-shaped bacterium that rarely causes infection in humans. To our knowledge, we report the first case of primary bilateral breast actinomycosis caused by A. neuii in an immunocompetent male patient. A 40-year-old man presented with chronic bilateral green nipple discharge. Despite a prior left breast abscess drainage and six weeks of oral penicillin V, symptoms persisted. Culture of the nipple discharge identified A. neuii. The patient's history included nipple piercings, and a mammogram confirmed the abscess. After failure of penicillin V

The present case reports a bacteremia due to Lachnoanaerobaculum umeaense (a Gram-positive, filamentous, rod-shaped, anaerobic, spore-forming bacillus present in the human oral microbiota) in a patient treated for acute myeloid leukemia. After failed identification by MALDI-TOF, identification was done by sequencing of 16s rRNA. The patient was successfully treated with Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and ciprofloxacin for seven days. Comparison of V1-V3 regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene gene with published sequences failed to classify the strain as pathogenic or non-pathogenic based on this

Flavonifractor plautii (formerly Eubacterium plautii) is an anaerobic gram positive rod shaped bacterium belonging to the family of Clostridiales, and a common member of the human gut microbiome. However, it is very rarely isolated from clinical human specimens, so data about its clinical significance are scarce. Here we report of a bloodstream infection due to F. plautii following gangrenous cholecystitis in a 69 year old man. After cholecystectomy and empirical antimicrobial treatment with ceftriaxone and metronidazole the patient recovered. F. plautii was the only bacterium detected in bloo

Cutibacterium acnes is a facultative anaerobic, gram-positive rod, and a commensal bacterium of the body surface including oral cavity. A causal relationship between C. acnes and chronic granulomatous diseases, such as sarcoidosis and orthopedic implant-associated infections, has been previously reported. Typically, C. acnes has been observed inside macrophages, allowing evasion of host immunity, and triggering a persistent inflammatory response. However, such findings have not been reported in peri-implantitis lesions. In this case series, we collected inflamed tissues from extensive peri-imp

Catabacter hongkongensis is a Gram-positive rod, isolated in 2007 in blood culture. Fewer than 15 infections have been reported. Herein, we present a lethal case of bacteremia due to C. hongkongensis identified through phylogenetic analyses. A woman was found unconscious in a context of chronic diarrhea. An abdominal abscess with a hydroaeric level was discovered, associated with sigmoid adenocarcinoma and peritoneal carcinomatosis. Despite hospitalization in an ICU and the adaptation of antibiotic therapy, the patient died. Blood cultures were positive in the final stage of the disease (>60 h

Actinomyces (A.) hyovaginalis is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, polymorphic bacterium. In domestic pigs, the infection is typically associated with pyogranulomatous pneumonia. In wild boars, this infection was never associated with such lesion. We report the gross, histopathological, and bacteriological findings in a case of pyogranulomatous pneumonia caused by A. hyovaginalis infection in a free-ranging wild boar. Fragments of the lungs, lymph nodes, and heart from a wild boar were sent by boar hunters for histopathological analysis with a presumptive tuberculosis diagnosis. Grossly, in the lun

OBJECTIVE: To review reported cases of anthrax meningoencephalitis and describe the clinical findings, diagnostic test results, treatment, a … ortive therapy. Hemorrhagic meningitis should raise suspicion of anthrax infection, particularly if gram-positive rods are demonstrated on Gram's stain. Anthrax meningoencephalitis can develop from any primary focus, but survival appears to be most likely if meningoencephalitis develops from cutaneous anthrax. Treatment of surviving patients was generally begun befo …

Shewanella putrefaciens is an opportunistic pathogen rarely responsible for human infection. However, it has been reported that it causes skin and soft tissue infections and bacteremia in immune-compromised patients, such as cellulitis, abscesses, bacteremia, and wound infection. It is an oxidase and catalase-positive non-fermenter gram-negative rod that produces hydrogen sulfide. We report the case of a 90-year-old woman, who presented an invasive infectious burn wound associated with Shewanella putrefaciens bacteremia. She was admitted into the burn center of the military hospital M.S Nekkac
