Extragingival pyogenic granuloma associated with medication: Report of an unusual case.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a well-known benign non-neoplastic overgrowth. It is a response to mild irritation and might be related to hormonal factors and certain kinds of drugs. PG preferentially affects the gingiva, but can be found extragingivally with varying clinical features. The most common treatment is surgical excision. This article describes a case of extragingival PG occurring on the tongue with unusual presentation, with emphasis on non-surgical treatment. Since surgical management had not been successful, an alternative approach was taken. We illustrated how the lesion was success

Interrelationship between pyogenic granuloma and peripheral ossifying fibroma: a case report.

Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) is an inflammatory hyperplasia which is non-neoplastic in nature. Because of the high incidence of oral PG, critical need exists for its proper diagnosis and treatment. Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma (POF) is a focal reactive overgrowth occurring in young adults. Though clinically similar to PG, it is important to differentiate the lesions based on the histopathological findings that facilitate the management of the lesion, which is diverse in nature when compared to PG. Proper treatment of such overgrowths and appropriate oral hygiene instructions shall ensure no recurre

Atypical fibroxanthoma developing on a pacemaker pocket mimicking a pyogenic granuloma.

Malignant tumors at the site of implantation of a pacemaker generator, although rare, have been reported in the literature. We present a case of an 89-year-old man with atypical fibroxanthoma in a pacemaker pocket. The device had been implanted for more than 4 years. An exophytic tumor had developed in this place and was clinically interpreted as a pyogenic granuloma. An excisional biopsy revealed the nature of the tumor. To our knowledge, the association of atypical fibroxanthoma arising from a pacemaker pocket has not been previously reported. A review of the literature has revealed four mal

[Pyogenic granuloma developing rapidly after excision of corneal/conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia].

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma is a benign tumor presenting with a smooth hemorrhagic surface that develops on the ocular surface after trauma or ophthalmic surgery. Abnormal wound healing due to physical and/or chemical stimulation may contribute to the pathogenesis of the tumor. We herein report the usefulness of brushing cytology for diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma, which rapidly developed after surgical resection of corneal/conjunctial intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). CASE: A 70-year-old man presented with a flat tumor on the left lower conjunctiva in conjunction with the cornea. The pati

Pyogenic granuloma of the duodenum treated successfully by endoscopic mucosal resection.

Pyogenic granuloma is a lobular capillary hemangioma that occurs mostly on the skin and the mucosal surfaces of the oral cavity and tongue. Only a few cases in other parts of the digestive tract have been reported. Gastrointestinal pyogenic granuloma is a rare cause of hemorrhage in the digestive tract, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with gastrointestinal bleeding. We report the case of a 62-year-old anemic woman found to have a pyogenic granuloma of the duodenum, which was treated adequately by endoscopic mucosal resection.

Pyogenic granuloma-treatment by shave-excision and/or pulsed-dye laser.

We present the results of our evolving treatment strategy for pyogenic granuloma (PG) affecting cosmetically sensitive areas, from 1996 to 2007. Fifty-one lesions in 49 patients aged six weeks to 87 years (mean, 23.5 years) affecting the head and neck skin (39%) and lip vermillion (14%), limbs (31%) and trunk (16%) were treated. Fifteen lesions (29%) had failed previous treatments elsewhere. Forty-two lesions (in 40 patients) underwent pulsed-dye laser (PDL) therapy alone, using fluences of 5.3-9.4 J/cm(2) (Photogenica V) or 15 J/cm(2) (V-Beam) without dynamic cooling, at 7 mm spot-size. An av

Pyogenic granuloma in two children successfully treated with imiquimod 5% cream.

Pyogenic granulomas are sometimes difficult to treat in children, especially very young children in whom surgical procedures may be difficult. Here, we present two children with pyogenic granuloma who were successfully treated by topical imiquimod cream with excellent results.

Pyogenic granuloma formation following placement of the Medennium SmartPLUG punctum plug.

PURPOSE: To report a complication, not previously described, of the Medennium SmartPLUG, which is a new punctal plug with a novel design. METHODS: Two case reports are detailed, including clinical and pathologic photographs. RESULTS: Case 1 is a 58-year-old woman with Sjögren syndrome. Nearly 2 years following placement of a SmartPLUG in her right lower canaliculus, the patient presented with an erythematous, papillomatous growth overlying her punctum. Biopsy demonstrated pyogenic granuloma. Case 2 is a 62-year-old woman with dry eye. Exactly 2 years after a SmartPLUG was place in her right

Pyogenic granuloma (pregnancy tumor) of the nasal cavity. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma is a benign lesion of unknown etiology that occurs in the skin and mucous membranes. It has been reported as a common lesion of the oral cavity and, less commonly, the nasal cavity. Although its etiology is unclear, pyogenic granuloma has long been associated with pregnancy, oral contraceptives and trauma. The term pregnancy tumor has been used to reflect the association with pregnancy; nevertheless, pyogenic granuloma is often misdiagnosed in obstetric patients. CASE: We present the case of a 37-year-old, pregnant woman with an enlarging nasal mass ultimately d

Oral pyogenic granuloma: a review of 38 cases from Ibadan, Nigeria.

Thirty-eight cases of patients with histologically confirmed pyogenic granuloma of the oral cavity were treated at the University College Hospital Dental Centre during the period 1982-1993. The age of the patients at presentation ranged from 5 to 74 years (mean 33) and the male:female ratio was 1:1.2. The main site was the gingiva (n-29, 74%). The clinical presentation was generally similar to that in other studies except that most of the lesions were large. All 38 cases were treated by excision and there were no recurrences among those with adequate follow-up.

[Pyogenic granuloma of the tongue in chronic graft versus host disease].

INTRODUCTION: The development of pyogenic granuloma of the tongue is rare. We report such a case in a patient with chronic graft-versus-host disease. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old girl was treated with allogenic bone marrow transplantation for aplastic anemia. Complications consisted in chronic graft-versus-host disease with cutaneous, mucosal and hepatic involvement. Seven months later, a voluminous pyogenic granuloma of the tongue developed on previous erosive lichenoid lesions of chronic graft-versus-host disease while the patient was under cyclosporin. Surgical resection was done. Relapse occ

Nd:YAG laser excision of a giant gingival pyogenic granuloma of pregnancy.

A 19-year-old Hispanic nullipara experienced the rapid growth of an oral lesion on the right lower gingiva which she had first noticed at 29 weeks gestation. The lesion interfered with oral hygiene and eating. At surgery, the lesion measured 3.5 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm. Biopsy confirmed a pyogenic granuloma ("granuloma gravidarum"). Panorex films showed no bony invasion. The lesion was excised using the Nd:YAG laser under general anesthesia when the patient had reached 36 3/7 weeks gestation. We chose the Nd:YAG laser over the CO2 laser for the removal of this very vascular lesion, because of its super

Pyogenic granuloma (lobular capillary hemangioma): a clinicopathologic study of 178 cases.

Pyogenic granuloma (lobular capillary hemangioma) is a common acquired vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes in the pediatric age group. This is a retrospective analysis of 178 patients, 17 years of age and younger (mean age 6.7 yrs). Forty-two percent of the lesions occurred in the first five years of life; only 12% appeared in infants less than 1 year old. The male:female ratio was 3:2. Most patients (74.2%) had no history of trauma or predisposing dermatologic condition. The mean lesional size was 6.5 mm and the mean duration at diagnosis was 3.8 months. The granulomas were most

Pyogenic granuloma following treatment of verruca vulgaris with cryotherapy and Duoplant.

We report an unusual case of pyogenic granuloma that appeared after the application of liquid nitrogen and 27 percent salicylic acid (Duoplant, Stiefel Inc.) to a verruca vulgaris. Only two cases of pyogenic granuloma following cryotherapy appear in the literature and pyogenic granuloma as a complication of salicylic acid application has not been documented.
