Exploring reactivity effects of self-monitoring prolonged grief reactions in daily life: A randomized waitlist-controlled trial using experience sampling methodology.

BACKGROUND: While people's symptomatology levels may change through self-monitoring of symptoms in daily life using experience sampling methodology (ESM), no controlled studies have examined such reactivity effects in the grief field. OBJECTIVE: We investigated reactivity effects of self-monitoring prolonged grief reactions to determine whether self-monitoring leads to clinically significant changes in early prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression symptoms at both group and individual levels. METHODS: 184 adults, bereaved 3 to 6 months earlier, w…

Furthermore, individuals ≥ 60 years old desire to spend their final days at home. Following the establishment of the Long-Term Care Insurance System in 2000, care managers at home care support facilities continually assist most older adults receiving home care. Moreover, home-based end-of-life care is expected to increase. Therefore, the care manager's role will be crucial in providing end-of-life care support and offering grief care to bereaved families following a …

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to show how grief is perceived by people who have lost a significant other, and it focuses on bereavement support, how the death affects the bereaved person's living conditions, …

Loss and Grief Among Persistently Delinquent Youth: The Contribution of Adversity Indicators and Psychopathy-Spectrum Traits to Broadband Internalizing and Externalizing Psychopathology.

Despite profound adversity exposure (loss, trauma) among delinquents, with adversity linked to early-onset persistent delinquency [EOPD], externalizing syndromes (Conduct Disorder) continue to overshadow impairing internalizing syndromes. Three understudied factors potentially contribute to both syndromes among delinquents: bereavement-related distress [BRD] from death-exposures; psychopathy-spectrum traits associated with system-involvement; and emotional abuse, implicated in lifespan morbidities. Therefore, we characterized loss/BRD among 107 EOPD adolescent girls and boys, comparing: 1) psy

A Combined Approach to Understanding Grief: Integration of the Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping With Bereavement (DPM).

The Two-Track Model of Bereavement (TTMB) and the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM) are two central models in the field of thanatology, offering theoretical frameworks for understanding how individuals cope with loss. While the two models share several fundamental principles - most notably the conceptualization of grief as a bidimensional process involving the interplay between mourning and functional adaptation to life after loss - they differ in their components, underlying theoretical assumptions, and clinical emphases, yielding complementary strengths that together can en…

Distinguishing prolonged grief and mental well-being after homicidal loss: a longitudinal factor analytic study in the context of a criminal trial.

Background: As per the dual-continua model, mental illness and mental well-being are related, distinct continua of mental health. Whether this association generalises to bereaved people and is stable over time remains uncertain. Moreover, criminal justice system (CJS) involvement may pose a risk to the different continua of mental health of bereaved people. Objectives: We investigated (1) whether the factor structure of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and well-being remains stable over time, and (2) whether aspects of CJS involvement are related to latent PGD and well-being levels reported after…

The Road Less Travelled: A Micro-Costing Analysis of an Online Pre-Death Grief and Loss Programme for Carers of People with a Rare Dementia.

The economic contribution of family and friend carers of people with dementia is substantial. Pre-death grief experienced by carers of people living with a rare dementia is complex as carers are faced with unique challenges due to geographical isolation and a lack of access to shared experiences. There is an urgent need for specialised interventions to support carers lacking local support. A micro-costing analysis of a novel online group-based pre-death grief and loss programme ('The Road Less Travelled') tailored for the carers of people with rare dementias was conducted from a provider persp…

Comparison of proposed diagnostic criteria for pathological grief using a sample of elderly bereaved spouses in Denmark: Perspectives on future bereavement research.

BACKGROUND: A distinct grief-specific disorder is included in the ICD-11. Lack of clarity remains regarding whether different proposed diagnostic criteria capture similar or different diagnostic entities. Our aim was to examine the specificity of four proposed diagnostic criteria-sets for pathological grief in a population-based sample. METHODS: Participants were 206 conjugally bereaved elderly Danes (59% female; mean age = 72.5 years, SD = 4.2; range 65-81) who completed self-report questionnaires six months post-loss. The main measure was the Danish version of Inventory of Complicated Grief…

Student reactions to the shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University: Does sharing grief and support over the internet affect recovery?

After the shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University, many students gravitated to the Internet for support. Despite the fact that the Internet plays a major role in how people live their lives in contemporary society, little is known about how people use the Internet in times of tragedy and whether this use affects well-being. To address these issues, the current study assessed the types of online activities more than 200 Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University students participated in 2 weeks after the shootings and again 6 weeks later, as well as their depressive and

Emotional pain in non-human mammals: from neural circuitry and opioid signaling to dysthymia-like states, grief-like behaviors, and physiological dysregulation.

This review aims to analyze the neurobiological, pathophysiological, and ethological foundations of emotional pain in non-human mammals, with particular emphasis on the transition from adaptive responses to pathological states such as animal dysthymia and Takotsubo syndrome. In the review, four conditions that can activate emotional systems will be discussed, such as pain derived from surgery or injury, stressful conditions that do not cause pain (e.g., unknown noises or smells), separation stress where an animal is isolated from the group (e.g., dam-calf separation), and death of a familiar a

Spring PGD versus waiting list control in the treatment of prolonged grief disorder (PGD): protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial (RCT).

Background: Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is characterised by persistent longing or preoccupation with a deceased loved one, accompanied by intense emotional pain that lasts six-months or more and significantly impairs functioning. While Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with a grief focus is effective, access is limited due to high costs and therapist shortages. Guided digital therapy, which delivers psychological support via an app or website with professional guidance, may offer a scalable solution. Building on the success of a guided digital intervention for post-traumatic stress disord…
