A mixed-methods study on factors influencing prenatal weight gain in ethnic-minority women.

INTRODUCTION: Gaining too much weight in pregnancy is associated with perinatal complications and increases the risks of future obesity for both women and their infants. Unfortunately, women enrolled in intervention trials have seen little improvement in adherence to prenatal weight gain recommendations compared to women receiving standard prenatal care. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive mixed-methods study was to explore factors related to excessive weight gain in pregnancy. METHODS: Nonpregnant nulliparous women, currently pregnant women, and postpartum women (N = 43) were recruite

Management of hypertension in general practice--a qualitative needs assessment of Australian GPs.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify strategies to improve the management of hypertension in general practice. METHODS: Four focus groups (25 general practitioners and general practice registrars) were conducted, recorded and transcribed. Common emerging themes were analysed by an iterative thematic process. RESULTS: Four main themes were identified: uncertainty about blood pressure measurement, achieving consensus in practice, accommodating patient differences and addressing systematic barriers. General practitioners want a more standardised approach to measuring and interpreting blood

Exploring menstrual health knowledge, attitude, and experiences among adolescent girls in public schools in Georgia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite being a physiological process for human development, menstruation can be burdened with a complex interplay of interpersonal, social, and structural factors. Evidence on menstrual health remains scarce across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and published research specifically addressing adolescent girls' menstrual health experiences in Georgia is lacking, despite cultural and historical factors that suggest unique challenges in this setting. Public schools represent a critical but understudied environment where infrastructural, educational, and social barriers to menstrual

Evaluation of the role development and implementation of advanced practice nurses in an Austrian university hospital: a mixed methods research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Advanced practice nurses play a vital role in addressing the growing complexity of healthcare. Although well-established internationally, advanced practice nursing in Austria remains in its early stages. The University Hospital Salzburg introduced its first advanced practice nurses in 2017, and in 2020 launched a comprehensive initiative to develop and implement advanced practice nursing roles across multiple specialties. This initiative included role development based on international frameworks, the creation of an advanced practice nurse network, scientific mentoring and an ada

[HOPAIR, a feasibility study focused on hope and recovery in suicide prevention].

Suicide is a major public health issue. Efforts to prevent it must begin as soon as hospitalization. Brief mental health interventions and contacts are known to be effective. The HOPAIR study proposes an innovative combination of peer support intervention and the Hope Box tool, followed by a reminder postcard sent to suicidal individuals hospitalized in psychiatric crisis units at two research centers in Lyon. Focusing on the resources of those affected, hope, and recovery, this study highlights the work of peer support workers and advanced practice nurses while offering encouraging prospects

Particular promotion of the intrauterine system to "vulnerable" adolescents: a qualitative exploration of hormonal contraceptive prescription practices.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that the intrauterine system increases the risk of depression, particularly in adolescents. However, these studies relied on national registry data collected at a time when medical guidelines discouraged adolescent use of this contraceptive method. As a result, the adolescents who appeared in these registries represented an atypical group who had this contraceptive prescribed against medical recommendations. Consequently, unknown or unmeasured participant characteristics may have introduced confounding variables and influenced conclusions. Although p

Fidelity in the context of adapting a digital intervention for depression from an evidence-based in-person format in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Digital interventions have emerged as a promising way to better meet growing population mental health needs. Our team developed a digital depression intervention (VMood; smartphone app) in Vietnam. VMood is adapted from an evidence-based in-person intervention (SSM) developed in Canada and uses cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) principles with remote coaching by non-specialist providers. Fidelity-adaptation is a major tension in implementation science. Fidelity is the degree an intervention is designed and delivered as intended. Conversely, adaptations are sometimes made for specif

Pesticide Use and Safety Behaviors Among Farmers in Rwanda's Eastern Province: Perspectives from Sector Officers on Drivers, Factors, and Gender Differences.

Growing pesticide use is linked to increased health risks for farmers across Africa, due to factors such as improper handling, insufficient knowledge, and lack of resources. To better understand these risk factors in Rwanda, where the majority of the population and most women are farmers, we held focus group discussions (FGDs) with 31 Sector Agricultural Officers (SAOs) and Sector Animal Resources Officers (SAROs) in five districts of Eastern Province. Among their views on this topic, we identified four core themes among the FGDs of (1) interconnected challenges, (2) shared exposure and health

Sun Exposure and the "Reverse Goggles Tan" as a Badge of Honor in Canadian Inuit Northern Communities.

INTRODUCTION: Sun protection behaviors are shaped by beliefs deeply rooted in culture and traditions. Understanding how beliefs shape sun protection behaviors is crucial for delivering culturally sensitive, congruent care. This is even more important in Indigenous communities where successful health promotion must align with traditional practices and local values. We explored how beliefs, shaped by cultural values, influence sun protection behaviors in Inuit residents of Nunavik. METHODS: Qualitative descriptive study using focus groups to collect information was conducted from June to August

Enhancing Clinical Guideline Adherence in Diabetic Foot Ulcer Prevention: A Case Study on Quality Improvement Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are common and serious complications in diabetes. To avoid DFUs, identification of at-risk patients through a structured foot assessment leading to appropriate risk classification is essential. However, this is often lacking in clinical practice. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to guideline adherence in diabetic care and to increase the proportion of diabetic patients who receive a foot risk classification. METHODS: This quantitative evaluation of improvement interventions was conducted at a department of prosthetics and orthotics

A qualitative study of Australian adolescent perceptions of fertility and infertility.

Adolescents require a specific set of fertility information and services to promote reproductive health and wellbeing extending into adulthood. Due to a common focus on preventing unplanned pregnancy in adolescents, fertility education can be perceived as antithetical. This study explores awareness and attitudes about fertility in adolescents to guide relevant inclusion of fertility in future information and service delivery. Twenty-five adolescents aged 15 to 18 years who had attended secondary schooling in Australia were recruited to participate in nine focus groups. Reflexive thematic analy

Understanding gambling related harm: a proposed definition, conceptual framework, and taxonomy of harms.

BACKGROUND: Harm from gambling is known to impact individuals, families, and communities; and these harms are not restricted to people with a gambling disorder. Currently, there is no robust and inclusive internationally agreed upon definition of gambling harm. In addition, the current landscape of gambling policy and research uses inadequate proxy measures of harm, such as problem gambling symptomology, that contribute to a limited understanding of gambling harms. These issues impede efforts to address gambling from a public health perspective. METHODS: Data regarding harms from gambling was
