BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia, characterized by benign proliferation of male breast glandular tissue, is a prevalent condition with complex etiologies. However, the absence of effective in vitro models has hindered mechanistic investigations and therapeutic development.
METHODS: In this study, we established and characterized organoids derived from the breast tissues of six male gynecomastia patients, including physiological, idiopathic, and hormone-related subtypes. Organoid fidelity was evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), and…

Gynecomastia is a more common finding in primary care clinics than is recognized. Because this finding can be easily overlooked, appropriate investigation and management often are missed. The workup of gynecomastia is highly individualized, based on the patient's presentation and related factors. It should be guided by thorough history taking and physical examination. Unless the patient has associated symptoms, or there is suspicion for an underlying clinical disorder causing the gynecomastia, the patient need not be investigated further. A breast ultrasound is not routinely recommended. Gynec…

Background and objective Gynecomastia is defined as a benign proliferation of male breast glandular tissue, either unilateral or bilateral, resulting from an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen. In this study, we aimed to describe the clinical, etiological, and therapeutic aspects of gynecomastia. Materials and methods A retrospective, descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Nutrition at the Hassan II University Hospital in Fez, Morocco, over a period of 10 years. We included all patients admitted for exploration and treatment of gynecomastia. Th…

BACKGROUND: Pubertal gynecomastia (PG), a benign condition with varied reported prevalence, typically appears at 13-14 years-old and is mostly idiopathic and self-limited. Psychologic impairments are common among adolescents with gynecomastia. Surgical intervention is reserved to severe cases and is offered towards the end of puberty. Pharmacological treatment is seldom given by clinicians mainly due to insufficient published data. We conducted this systematic literature review to assess the efficacy, safety, side effects, and complications of pharmacological treatments published.
METHODS: ME…

OBJECTIVE: To describe the case of a 17-year-old transgender boy who experienced breast development while on testosterone, having been suppressed with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist prior to testosterone therapy.
CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old transgender boy presented with breast development after having been on a GnRH agonist and then testosterone since the age of 11 years, having never experienced breast development before, which was consistent with pubertal gynecomastia. A small decrease in the testosterone dose resulted in a significant reduction of gynecomastia. Despite the…

Posaconazole therapy may lead to increased serum estradiol levels and development of gynecomastia. Early detection by endocrine hormone measurements may help preventing gynecomastia.

Many techniques are available for surgical correction of gynecomastia. In this article, we describe a technique based on geometrical principles that is simple to execute, effective, highly reproducible, and relies less on intuition of the surgeon.

BACKGROUND: The aim of gynecomastia surgery is to restore a normal chest contour with minimal signs of breast surgery.
OBJECTIVE: The authors examine the rate of complications in gynecomastia surgery when no closed-suction drains are placed.
METHODS: One hundred thirty-eight consecutive male patients who underwent gynecomastia surgery without drains were retrospectively analyzed to determine whether the absence of drains adversely affected patient outcomes. Patients were managed by ultrasonic-assisted liposuction both with and without the pull-through technique.
RESULTS: The mean age of the…

Non-physiologic prepubertal gynecomastia with an identifiable cause is an uncommon condition. Hyperprolactinemia due to hypothyroidism is known to result in gynecomastia in adults, but this observation has not been reported in children. We discuss here a boy who developed gynecomastia after the first year of age and was later diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism.

Gynecomastia is defined as the benign enlargement of the male breast. Multiple surgical options have been used to improve outcomes. The aim of this study was to analyze the surgical approaches to the treatment of gynecomastia and their outcomes over a 10-year period. All patients undergoing surgical correction of gynecomastia in our department between 2000 and 2010 were included for retrospective evaluation. The data were analyzed for etiology, stage of gynecomastia, surgical technique, complications, risk factors, and revision rate. The surgical result was evaluated with self-assessment quest…

Gynecomastia is the most common abnormality in the male breast and has been associated with male breast cancer, but whether there is an etiological role remains unknown. In the present study we conducted an immunohistochemical investigation to further characterize gynecomastia. A total of 46 cases of gynecomastia were immunohistochemically stained on tissue microarrays for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor, HER2, androgen receptor, cytokeratins (CK5, CK14, CK7, and CK8/18), p63, E-cadherin, BRST2, cyclin D1, Bcl-2, p53, p16, p21, and Ki67. In addition, 8 cases of male ductal carcin…

BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia is a benign, excessive development of the male breast that occurs at an overall incidence of 32-36 %. The authors effectively removed peripheral fat tissues with power-assisted liposuction (PAL) and periareolar glandular tissues with a cartilage shaver in a series of patients. The small periareolar incisions were not easily recognized.
METHODS: Between February 2010 and April 2012, the charts of 15 patients (28 breasts) treated with PAL and a cartilage shaver were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: The mean volume of fat tissue removed with liposuction was 319 mL, an…

Adolescent gynecomastia is common and often regresses spontaneously, but persistent gynecomastia can result in psychological distress. Many view obesity as a root cause for gynecomastia. However, the role of obesity on persistent gynecomastia and its effect on surgical outcomes remains poorly understood. This retrospective study reviewed demographics and surgical outcomes of adolescents with gynecomastia comparing obese/overweight to normal weighted patients. Our database was screened for male "breast" specimens between 1997-2008. Sixty-nine patients were identified. By BMI criteria, 51% were …
