INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) or osteoclastoma is an osteolytic, mostly benign but locally aggressive tumor occurring in young adults at the meta-epiphyseal region of long bones such as lower end of the femur, upper end of the tibia, and lower end of the radius, and proximal humerus in descending order of frequency. Only 2% of all GCT of bone occur in hand. GCT of metacarpal (MC) has different characteristics than that of other long bones. It has more aggressive behavior with involvement of entire length of MC with soft tissue extension.
CASE REPORT: We are reporting a case of GCT of t

An asymptomatic atypical U shaped cleft hand has been found in a 21-year-old lady attending OPD. On digital skiagram it was found that central digits were absent with remnants of bases of the metacarpals, which have fused with the carpal bones. Moreover, the scaphoid and trapezium had fused to form a single mass. There was no other anomaly in other limbs, so far searched for. An endeavor has been made to explain the anomaly with ontogenetic review.

Sports-related injuries of the hand and wrist include lesions of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. In many cases, radiologic imaging procedures are indispensible for the depiction, localization and accurate diagnosis of these lesions. This article reviews the role and potential of current imaging modalities such as conventional radiography, fluoroscopic examinations, arthrography, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for the diagnostic work-up of typical osseous and soft tissue injuries in sports medicine.

A free osteocutaneous groin flap, based on the deep circumflex iliac artery, was used to primarily fuse the wrist and stabilize the first and second metacarpal bones, as well as provide soft tissue coverage for a severely injured hand. The indications for primary reconstruction with free tissue transfers include a tidy wound with minimal bacterial contamination, ready access to uninjured recipient vessels, and a predictable advantage in the use of free tissue transfer over conventional techniques.

OBJECTIVE: The current validated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scoring method for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in clinical trials, RA MRI Score (RAMRIS), incorporates all metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and wrist joints except MCP-1. The experience with radiographic scoring, however, was that excluding certain bones in the wrist improved the discriminative power for changes over time. In this study, we pool MRI data from randomized controlled clinical trails (RCT) to determine which combination of MCP and wrist joints are most sensitive and discriminative for structural changes over time.
METHODS:

Dolichospondylic dysplasia (DD) is a rare skeletal dysplasia primarily characterized by tall vertebral bodies and disproportionate short stature. Radiographic manifestations include tall vertebral bodies and gracile bones of the hands. Patients usually have eye and ear findings in addition to borderline mental retardation; however, tall vertebral bodies and slender tubular bones are also seen in the 3-M syndrome. Patients with the 3-M syndrome have a characteristic face with a triangular shape, frontal bossing, a flattened malar region, full eyebrows, a short nose with a bulbous tip, upturned

The flexor retinaculum of the hand is a fibrous structure forming the carpal tunnel in conjunction with the carpal bones. To prevent incomplete release of the carpal tunnel it is of benefit to know about the expected longitudinal expansion of the flexor retinaculum. The objective of the present study was to identify a possible correlation between the proximodistal expansion of the flexor retinaculum and the length of the hand. We conducted an anatomical study on 124 hands of 62 body donors. The hand length and the length of the flexor retinaculum were measured in millimeters. By dividing the l

Soft tissue damage in electric burn injuries is often deep and may expose tendons, bones, or joints in the hand. Here, we present the case of a 76-year-old man treated using perifascial areolar tissue (PAT) transplantation for covering the proximal interphalangeal joint of the middle finger, which had been exposed because of an electric burn. Following ointment therapy, surgery was performed on day 34 postinjury when a deep ulcer with opening of the proximal interphalangeal joint was observed on the dorsum of the right middle finger. After resecting the cartilage of the proximal interphalangea

Skeletal changes induced by treatment of pregnant rats with four potent teratogens, busulfan, acetazolamide, vitamin A palmitate, and ketoconazole, were evaluated using Alizarin Red S and Alcian Blue double-staining to investigate the relationship between drug-induced skeletal malformations and cartilaginous changes in the fetuses. Pregnant rats (N = 8/group) were treated once or twice between gestation days (GDs) 10 to 13 with busulfan at doses of 3, 10, or 30 mg/kg; acetazolamide at 200, 400, or 800 mg/kg; vitamin A palmitate at 100,000, 300,000, or 1,000,000 IU/kg; or ketoconazole at doses

Multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE) and enchondromatosis are rare multifocal benign disorders usually causing skeletal deformities appearing already in childhood. MHE is a dominant autosomal inherited disorder characterized by multiple osteochondromas (exostoses) growing outward from the metaphyses of long bones as well as from flat bones. They may cause reduced joint motion and pain due to tendon, muscle, and nerve compression. Enchondromatosis (or Ollier's disease) is a noninherited disorder characterized by the presence of multiple intraosseous enchondromas located asymmetrically in the ske

Some malignant tumors of soft tissues that metastasize to bones are characterized by an insignificant increase in the levels of certain amino acids in the serum of the host. Primary malignant bone tumors, on the other hand, tend to increase significantly the concentration of amino acids in the host serum. We found that malignant transformation of bones, cartilage, and connective tissue induced changes in the metabolism of the patients which led to a significant elevation of several amino acids in their serum. Only alanine and cysteine showed a decreased level in the sera of patients with bone

Unselected patients receiving intermittent haemodialysis at home were examined by hand radiographs to study the progression of osteitis fibrosa. Patients were using Kiil dialysers and Drake-Willock proportioning systems. The calcium phosphorus product was controlled by an adequate dialysis schedule supplemented by aluminum hydroxide gel. Dialysate calcium ranged between 5.7 and 7.3 mg/100 ml depending on the calcium content of local tap water. In 73 percent of patients the osteitis fibrosa improved radiologically and in most patients complete healing occurred. The rate of change was slow. Pati

The rare occurrence and the difficulties in diagnosis make partial and total luxations of the scaphoid to a problematic chapter in hand surgery. The main part in diagnosis lies in the correct interpretation of the X-ray pictures from which the different formes of displacement may be recognized. These include isolated luxations of scaphoid in palmar, radial or dorsal directions, varying degrees of scapho-lunate subluxations and luxations and the special type of isolated subluxation of the scaphoid bone. In the first part of the paper the diagnostic criteria and in particular the radiologic sign

Forensic toolmark examiners compare marks between those observed on an item/surface and those made by a reference implement, such as a particular tool or weapon, to provide an opinion of the likelihood of common origin. It is widely accepted that such comparison opinions need to be underpinned by empirical research, and this study aimed to add to the knowledge base relied upon when developing and comparing saw marks in bone, a substrate encountered in body dismemberment cases. Porcine bones were used as a human proxy; they were either fresh with residual soft tissue and bodily fluids present (

OBJECTIVE: Details on airbag injuries to the upper extremity are relatively unknown to clinicians. The injuries presented here should provide a clear understanding of the mechanisms of forearm, hand, and wrist injuries that may be seen by emergency room physicians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From our crash investigations of 325 airbag-equipped passenger cars, a subset of upper extremity injuries are presented that are related to airbag deployments.
MAIN RESULTS: Minor hand, wrist, or forearm injuries--contusions, abrasions, and sprains--are not uncommonly reported. Infrequently, hand fractures h

Hemorrhage into the hand and forearm in hemophiliacs can be devastating if not treated early and properly. Of 200 hemophiliacs followed from 1969 to 1976, thirty-four had lesions of the hand and forearm. Hemarthrosis, the most common musculo-skeletal manifestation of hemophilia, occurred in the wrist and hand on only ten occasions. Superficial hemorrhage in the seven cases seen was not followed by significant sequelae. Bleeding into the anterior muscles and into the volar aspect of the wrist, on the other hand, was complicated by contracture, neuropathy, or both in six cases. Early diagnosis,

Enchondromatosis secondary to Ollier disease (OD) is rare, with secondary chondrosarcomas (CS) accounting for only 1% of malignant osseous tumours. This is one of only two reports documenting four enchondromas of different bones of the same hand developing malignant transformation, with long-term follow-up. This is a 72-year-old female with histologically proven CS from multiple enchondromas of the index finger metacarpal and proximal phalanx, and middle finger proximal and middle phalanges. Six years following curettage and bone grafting, she showed no recurrence or metastases from CS. While

Enchondroma (EC) is a benign and cartilage-forming tumor that causes intramedullary lesions. Moreover, EC is the most common bone tumor in the phalanges and metacarpal bones of the hand, deforming the structure and causing pain and functional limitation. The management of this neoplasia is the surgical treatment and the approach that is well-accepted consists in the curettage followed by the void augmentation with biological or synthetic fillers. The results from surgery are usually good and the recurrence rate is low (2-15%). In this article we report a case of EC recurrence of the proximal p
