A changing pattern of injuries to horse riders.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the demographics and nature of injuries occurring on or around horses, to examine the nature of protective clothing in relation to these injuries, and to compare our data with previously published work in this area. METHODS: Patients were identified using the term "sports injury-horse riding" from the departmental database for one calendar year from February 2000. Data were collected regarding demographics, injuries, protective clothing, and outcome. The data were then analysed and compared with the previously published literature. RESULTS: 260 patients' records were

Nonsurgical carotid revascularization.

Carotid endarterectomy is a well-established treatment of improving the carotid luminal diameter and preventing strokes, and the indications and complications are well-defined. Carotid angioplasty and stent placements are relatively newer ways of treating carotid artery stenosis. In certain contexts, they may have some advantages over carotid endarterectomy. However, the success rates, morbidity, and mortality associated with these procedures are less well characterized. In earlier comparative studies, the incidence of ipsilateral stroke rate was higher with angioplasty, but in later studies,

Unilateral Lambdoid Craniosynostosis: A Single Institution's Experience With a Rare Diagnosis.

Unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis is the least common variant of craniosynostosis. Due to its rarity, the development of new techniques in treatment is limited. Less invasive surgical approaches, including distraction osteogenesis and strip craniectomy, have recently gained popularity in the treatment of all forms of craniosynostosis. These procedures have been shown to decrease intraoperative blood loss, transfusion requirements, and operative time. However, the literature is lacking regarding these treatments for unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis. Here, we present our institution's exp

Assessing bicycle helmet protection for head and neck in E-scooter falls.

OBJECTIVES: The rapid increase in E-scooter usage has led to more scooter-related head and neck injuries. Yet, experimental data on head impacts and helmet effectiveness during crashes are scarce. The objectives of this study are to experimentally evaluate bicycle helmets in E-scooter falls, assessing head kinematics, impact conditions, and injury risks in two crash scenarios with and without helmets. METHODS: Six E-scooter forward falls, induced by a curb collision at 20 km/h, were simulated in sled tests using a Hybrid III 50th anthropomorphic test device with and without a helmet. The curb

Horse-racing injuries in children before and after the introduction of safety regulations in Mongolia.

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of safety regulations governing traditional Mongolian horse racing on the frequency and severity of injuries among child jockeys. Regulations introduced in 2019 mandate the wearing of helmets and protective clothing, prohibit the participation of jockeys aged < 7 years, and ban horse racing during the cold season (November-April). National injury surveillance data were used to compare the profile of injuries that occurred among children aged < 15 years in the 4-year periods before and after the introduction of the regulations (2015-2018 and

Comparison of single bicycle crashes and collisions among severely injured cyclists-A 16-year analysis based on the Helsinki Trauma Registry (HTR).

OBJECTIVE: The Finnish national Traffic Safety Strategy 2022-2026 seeks to halve the number of road fatalities and serious injuries from 2020 to 2030. The strategy states that better information on bicycle crashes is needed for safety promotion. The aim of this study was to describe the demographics, injury characteristics, alcohol involvement, and helmet use of severely injured cyclists and to compare single bicycle crashes (falling alone or hitting a fixed object) to collisions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We identified all bicycle crashes between 2006 and 2021 from the Helsinki Trauma Registry (

Impact of Playing Surface on Concussion Symptoms in Young American Football Players.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that sport-related concussion (SRC) occurs more commonly on natural grass compared with artificial turf in contact sports. As playing surface is a potentially modifiable risk factor, this study sought to identify differences in symptoms following SRC on these 2 surfaces in a sample of young American football players. DESIGN: Prospective. SETTING: Part of the multi-institutional North Texas Concussion Registry (ConTex) research project. PARTICIPANTS: Ten-year-old to 24-year-old male American football players (n = 62) who had sustained a helmet-to-ground SRC a

The Impact of Protective Devices Across the Spectrum of Trauma Care and Across Racial Groupings.

INTRODUCTION: Protective devices such as seat belts and helmets save lives. Most studies only address one aspect of the injury profile - compliance or mortality - not the entire spectrum of trauma care, and little attention is paid to racial differences in the use or impact of protective devices. METHODS: Patients with blunt mechanisms where using protective devices would be expected were included and were divided into utilizing (P) vs not utilizing protection (Non-P). Chart review included demographics, injuries sustained, hemodynamics, and blood alcohol level. Outcomes included need for eme

Trauma Surgeon-Led and Funded Injury Prevention Program Decreases Number of All-Terrain Vehicle-Related Admissions.

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) laws regarding helmet use, alcohol involvement, and roadway riding are poorly enforced or largely ignored. We hypothesized that direct surgeon funding and leadership in injury prevention would decrease ATV crashes. To focus prevention efforts, we reviewed a rural level 1 trauma center 11-year experience with ATV crashes comparing helmeted and unhelmeted rider outcomes. METHODS: For the latter 6 years of the study period, a trauma surgeon sponsored an injury prevention fund promoting ATV safety using simulators and discussions for area high school students

Characteristics and comparison between e-scooters and bicycle-related trauma: a multicentre cross-sectional analysis of data from a road collision registry.

BACKGROUND: Urban mobility has drastically evolved over the last decade and micromobility rapidly became an expanding segment of contemporary daily transportation routines. E-scooter riders and bicyclists may share similar trauma characteristics, but this has been little explored. The objective was to describe and compare the characteristics of e-scooter and bicycle-related trauma. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Rhône road collision registry (January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019). We included all e-scooter or bicycle riders injured in traffic collisions duri

Padded Headgear does not Reduce the Incidence of Match Concussions in Professional Men's Rugby Union: A Case-control Study of 417 Cases.

Concussion is the most common match injury in rugby union. Some players wear padded headgear, but whether this protects against concussion is unclear. In professional male rugby union players, we examined: (i) the association between the use of headgear and match concussion injury incidence, and (ii) whether wearing headgear influenced time to return to play following concussion. Using a nested case-control within a cohort study, four seasons (2013-2017) of injury data from 1117 players at the highest level of rugby union in England were included. Cases were physician-diagnosed concussion inju

Laboratory Reconstructions of Real-world Bicycle Helmet Impacts.

The best way to prevent severe head injury when cycling is to wear a bike helmet. To reduce the rate of head injury in cycling, knowing the nature of real-world head impacts is crucial. Reverse engineering real-world bike helmet impacts in a laboratory setting is an alternative to measuring head impacts directly. This study aims to quantify bike helmet damage using computed tomography (CT) and reconstruct real-world damage with a custom, oblique test rig to recreate real-world impacts. Damaged helmets were borrowed from a helmet manufacturer who runs a helmet warranty program. Each helmet was

Risk compensation? The relationship between helmet use and cycling speed under naturalistic conditions.

INTRODUCTION: An argument against mandatory helmet use is based on the idea of risk compensation, which means that cyclists might ride faster when wearing a helmet (Lardelli-Claret et al., 2003). However, questionnaire and experimental studies were unable to find evidence for this assumption (Fyhri et al., 2012; Fyhri & Philipps, 2013). Simultaneously, other factors with a potential role in helmet use and cycling speed, such as trip length and rider characteristics have been neglected in such considerations. The goal of the analysis presented in this paper was therefore to investigate the rela

Bicycle helmet use patterns in Italy. A description and analysis of survey data from an Italian friends of cycling association.

Cycling is becoming one of the most popular forms of recreation and transport the world over, but cyclists still have a high level of vulnerability. A bicycle helmet is an important safety device available to cyclists, but little is known regarding possible determinants of helmet use among adults. This study aims at providing information on helmet usage patterns in Italy and identifying the factors associated with bicycle helmet use. Data on 2072 bicycle riders from an Italian friends of cycling association aged 18 years or older who had ridden a bicycle in the last month were collected using
