Experience of Health Professionals in Caring for Patients With Chest Trauma: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The variation in the implementation of chest trauma (CT) management's guidelines led to inconsistent and mixed experiences toward CT management by the health care team. Moreover, there is a scarcity of studies exploring factors that enhance CT management experiences worldwide and in Jordan. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were (1) to explore emergency health professionals' attitudes and experiences toward CT management and (2) to understand factors that affect the care for patients with CTs among emergency health professionals. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory approach was a

A Socio-Demographic Examination of Adults Responding to Governmental Vaccination Recommendations during the Japanese Rubella Outbreak of 2013.

BACKGROUND: In 2013 a rubella outbreak occurred among Japanese people of working-age which resulted in 14,357 reported cases. The Japanese government subsequently recommended voluntary vaccination or rubella antibody testing for young women (15-49 years of age) who were planning to conceive and for adult men, children, and other persons in potential contact with pregnant women at home. However, the expense and time involved for vaccination, antibody testing and visiting a clinic may represent a major barrier to voluntary compliance among this busy demographic. The aim of the current study was,

Methylphenidate poisoning: an evidence-based consensus guideline for out-of-hospital management.

A review of US poison center data for 2004 showed over 8,000 ingestions of methylphenidate. A guideline that determines the conditions for emergency department referral and prehospital care could potentially optimize patient outcome, avoid unnecessary emergency department visits, reduce health care costs, and reduce life disruption for patients and caregivers. An evidence-based expert consensus process was used to create the guideline. Relevant articles were abstracted by a trained physician researcher. The first draft of the guideline was created by the lead author. The entire panel discussed

Liposomal amphotericin B for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis.

During the past decade, liposomal amphotericin B has been used with increasing frequency to treat visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The World Health Organization convened a workshop to review current knowledge and to develop guidelines for liposomal amphotericin B use for VL. In Europe, liposomal amphotericin B is widely used to treat VL. In Africa and Asia, the VL disease burden is high and drug access is poor; liposomal amphotericin B is available only through preferential pricing for nonprofit groups in East Africa. Clinical trials and experience demonstrate high efficacy and low toxicity for li

Smallpox vaccination for emergency physicians.

On December 13, 2002, President Bush formally announced the national smallpox vaccination program. The plan involves vaccinating health care workers who would respond to possible smallpox cases, including emergency physicians. Although not all aspects of the program are clearly established, it appears that vaccination of health care workers will occur in the near future. This joint statement has been used by the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine regarding smallpox vaccination for emergency physicians.

Exploring barriers and associated factors in the preparedness for cholera outbreak response in Public Health Centres of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Cholera remains a significant public health threat in Ethiopia, where recurrent outbreaks disproportionately affect urban populations. Despite the critical role of primary healthcare centers in outbreak response, their level of preparedness (long-term planning, including protocols, training, and resource allocation) and readiness (immediate operational capacity for response) in Addis Ababa is not well understood. An Institutional-based, cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted from August to September 2024 across all 101 public health centers in Addis Ababa. Quantitative data were col

[Epidemiology of Viral Hemorrhagic Fever in Africa].

A variety of viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola virus disease exist in Africa and impose a great threat in public health due to their high fatality. It is considered to be difficult to eradicate the etiological agents of viral hemorrhagic fever because they have non-human natural hosts. Therefore, the importance of public health measures remains high in addition to the urgent need for the development of medicines for treatment and prevention. Furthermore, public health measures directly lead to the accumulation of epidemiological knowledge about the diseases. As an infectious disease consu

Cassandra's prophecy: a psychological perspective. Why we need to do more than just tell women.

The most salient psychological issue in the article 'Cassandra's prophecy' is the lack of fertility knowledge. This lack of knowledge exhibited by both Jane and the medical professionals resulted in a delay in trying to get pregnant and in seeking and receiving appropriate care, ultimately resulting in inadvertent childlessness. We identify five educational initiatives to increase fertility knowledge and personal awareness in order to promote informed decision-making about fertility health issues. These initiatives cover: (i) better sexual education for children; (ii) family planning for young

Rate of spontaneous onset of labour before planned repeat caesarean section at term.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend that, in the absence of compelling medical indications (low risk) elective caesarean section should occur after 38 completed weeks gestation. However, implementation of these guidelines will mean some women go into labour before the planned date resulting in an intrapartum caesarean section. The aim of this study was to determine the rate at which low-risk women planned for repeat caesarean section go into spontaneous labour before 39 weeks. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of women who were planned to have an elective repeat caesarean sec

In-Hospital Management of Acute Heart Failure.

Hospitalizations for decompensated heart failure confer significant morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. There are multiple clinical trials, which offer strong evidence that medications and interventions improve outcomes; however, hospitalization and mortality rates remain high. Key components of effective management during the heart failure hospitalization include appropriate diagnostic evaluation, triage and risk stratification, early implementation of guideline-directed medical therapy, adequate diuresis, management of cardiogenic shock, and appropriate discharge planning.

Incidence and prevalence, and medication use among adults living with dermatomyositis: an Alberta, Canada population-based cohort study.

Dermatomyositis is a rare disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness and skin rashes. Estimates of incidence and prevalence are fundamental measures in epidemiology, but few studies have been conducted on dermatomyositis. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a population-based study to determine the contemporary incidence (between 2013 and 2019) and prevalence (2019) of adults living with dermatomyositis using administrative health data in Alberta, Canada. We also described disease-related medication use, as there are very few approved medications for the treatment of dermatom
