A Mobile Health Tool for Peer Support of Individuals Reentering Communities After Incarceration.

Individuals just released from prison, or returning citizens (RCs), face high mortality rates during the reentry period, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being a leading cause. Peer mentors can support RCs' health, but they traditionally work in person, which may not always be feasible, particularly during pandemic outbreaks such as COVID-19. We used human-centered design to build a prototype of RCPeer, a web/mobile application (app) to support peer-led reentry efforts through CVD risk screening, action planning, linkage to resources addressing reintegration needs (e.g., housing, transportati

A research agenda for malaria eradication: modeling.

Malaria modeling can inform policy and guide research for malaria elimination and eradication from local implementation to global policy. A research and development agenda for malaria modeling is proposed, to support operations and to enhance the broader eradication research agenda. Models are envisioned as an integral part of research, planning, and evaluation, and modelers should ideally be integrated into multidisciplinary teams to update the models iteratively, communicate their appropriate use, and serve the needs of other research scientists, public health specialists, and government off

Pregnant people's responses to the COVID-19 pandemic: a mixed-methods, descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Given the extent of the COVID-19 pandemic and uncertainty around the timing of its containment, understanding the experiences and responses of the perinatal population is essential for planning responsive maternity care both during and after the pandemic. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of pregnant people and their responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify how health care providers can support this population. METHODS: This was a mixed-methods, descriptive study with cross-sectional and qualitative descriptive components. We conducted the study betwe

Facilitating Perinatal Access to Resources and Support (PeARS): a feasibility study with external pilot of a novel intervention.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of women in areas of high socio-economic deprivation are at risk of developing depressive symptoms in pregnancy. Feeling well supported, can facilitate good mental health perinatally. A brief, innovative intervention to facilitate access to support and resources was developed and tested. This included one antenatal and one postnatal session, each with three evidence-based components: i) support from a non-professional peer to enable a woman to identify her needs; ii) information about local community services and signposting; and iii) development of a personalised If-Then

Advancing Medication Safety: Establishing a National Action Plan for Adverse Drug Event Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Adverse drug events (ADEs) are important contributors to preventable morbidity and mortality, comprising one third of all hospital adverse events. In response to growing evidence detailing the high prevalence of ADEs, particularly among vulnerable older adults, Congress requested that the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) convene a Federal Interagency Steering Committee to establish a National Action Plan to focus on ADE prevention. In August 2014, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion released the final version of the National Action Pl

Sexual and reproductive health concerns of women with epilepsy beginning in adolescence and young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Women with epilepsy (WWE) have potentially unique concerns regarding their sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Prior studies of WWE have focused narrowly on pregnancy and preconception experiences, and have not addressed concerns of nulliparous adolescent and young adult women not actively seeking pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted individual semi-structured interviews with WWE 18-45 years of age. We sampled to maximize diversity of age and parity, and intentionally included many adolescent and young adult nulliparous women not actively planning pregnancy. Interviews broadly addre

In search of the missing linkages: continuity of care in U.S. jails.

Persons with symptoms of acute mental illnesses present problems for jail management. Jails have a constitutional duty to provide psychiatric services to all persons in need of such care. However, mental health resources are frequently insufficient to meet the many needs of persons with mental illnesses in jails, and are often inaccessible to those released to the community. This study focuses on the experiences of a cohort of detainees (n = 379) with mental illnesses who have been incarcerated in seven U.S. jails. Data gathered include criminal and demographic characteristics, mental health s

Sustainability of Rideshare Programs to Promote Engagement of Underrepresented Populations in Breast Cancer Screening Trials.

BACKGROUND: Transportation barriers significantly limit participation in breast cancer screening trials among Hispanic women, exacerbating disparities in breast cancer outcomes and underrepresentation in clinical research. Rideshare programs have emerged as a potential solution, but their long-term sustainability remains underexplored. Understanding sustainability capacity is critical to ensuring these programs can address structural barriers, promote health equity, and improve outcomes for underserved populations. The aim of this study is to evaluate sustainability capacity of a no-cost rides
