Age-related augmentation of plasma catecholamines during dynamic exercise in healthy males.

Although plasma norepinephrine (NE) increases with age in response to a variety of submaximal adrenergic stimuli, the effect of age on plasma catecholamine levels during maximal aerobic effort and during submaximal work at a fixed percent of peak O2 consumption (VO2) is unknown. We therefore measured NE, epinephrine (E), and VO2 at rest and during graded maximal treadmill exercise in 24 healthy male volunteers (ages 22-77 yr) from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging who were rigorously screened to exclude the presence of cardiovascular disease. At rest neither heart rate (HR) nor VO2 wer

Dependence of resting urethral pressure on age and sex of healthy subjects and on technical details.

The authors used the Harrison and Constable variation of the original method of Brown and Wickham. The maximal pressure level in the urethral pressure profile depends on technical details. Younger healthy individuals show a higher resistance than older ones. Prostate enlargement leads to an elongation of the posterior urethra. The physiological elasticity loss disposes older persons to stress incontinence.

Impact of Age and Gender on Serum Cytokine and Chemokine Levels: Analysis of 157 Healthy Subjects across Consecutive Age Groups.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the effects of age and sex on circulating cytokine and chemokine levels in healthy individuals is essential for establishing reliable reference ranges and tailoring assessments. Although previous studies have compared younger and older populations, few have systematically examined sequential age decades. This study aimed to characterize continuous age-related changes in serum cytokine and chemokine profiles across adulthood in 157 healthy individuals. METHODS: Serum samples from 100 individuals aged 20s-60s (10 males and 10 females per decade) were obtained from th

Mobility screening for fall prediction in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA): implications for fall prevention in the decade of healthy ageing.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines for fall prevention in older adults recommend mobility screening for fall risk assessment; however, there is no consensus on which test to use and at what cutoff. This study aimed to determine the accuracy and optimal cut-off values of commonly used mobility tests for predicting falls in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). METHODS: Mobility tests at baseline included the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Single Leg Stance (SLS), chair-rise and gait speed. Inclusion criteria were: age ≥ 65 years and meeting first-level fall screening criteria (i.e. history of a fall or

Effects of age on genetic influence on bone loss over 17 years in women: the Healthy Ageing Twin Study (HATS).

The rate of bone loss varies across the aging period via multiple complex mechanisms. Therefore, the role of genetic factors on bone loss may also change similarly. In this study, we investigated the effect of age on the genetic component of bone loss in a large twin-based longitudinal study. During 17 years of follow-up in TwinsUK and Healthy Ageing Twin Study (HATS), 15,491 hip and lumbar spine dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans were performed in 7056 twins. Out of these subjects, 2716 female twins aged >35 years with at least two scans separated for >4 years (mean follow-up 9.7 ye

Integrative approaches to healthy aging in postmenopausal women: the synergistic benefits of exercise combined with functional foods and dietary supplements.

The transition into menopause is accompanied by physiological changes that can impact women's health and quality of life (QoL), including impaired bone metabolism, metabolic dysregulation, and diminished mental well-being. This review explores integrative, non-pharmacological strategies-specifically structured exercise training combined with functional foods and dietary supplements-as synergistic approaches to mitigate these challenges. We synthesize current evidence on the endocrine, skeletal, metabolic, and psychological effects of pairing physical training with bioactive components, specifi

Vitamin D Receptor Polymorphisms and Their Association with Nrf2-Dependent Gene Expression in Oxidative Stress Resilience in Cognitively Healthy Aging.

The vitamin D receptor (VDR) exerts pleiotropic effects essential for human health and modulates the transcription of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a key regulator of the cellular antioxidant defense system. Polymorphisms represent a major source of interindividual variability and may influence susceptibility to oxidative stress. The VDR polymorphisms ApaI (A > C) and TaqI (T > C) have been associated with disease susceptibility; however, their role in oxidative stress responses during aging remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the association between ApaI and

Developing a Multi-Directional Lower-Limb Training System Toward Aging in Place Rehabilitation: A Preliminary Feasibility Study on Healthy Individuals.

Not only improving muscle strength but also improving muscle power and neuromuscular control are important factors in improving lower limb function. In this study, a multi-directional lower-limb training system for aging -in-place rehabilitation was developed. The training system offers four distinct modes: muscle power training, pivoting neuromuscular training, muscle strength training using eccentric contractions, and proprioception training with evaluation. The feasibility of the training system was assessed through experiments conducted on healthy adults. Parameters such as mean of electro

Choroid plexus volume and its association with cognitive performance across the lifespan: Links to sleep quality and healthy brain aging.

The choroid plexus (ChP) is implicated in inflammation and supports the clearance of waste byproducts, particularly those related to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Increases in ChP volume have been associated with older age and cognitive decline in both clinical and healthy cohorts. However, the clearance of waste products in the brain is also related to sleep, and sleep quality may contribute to ChP dysfunction and cognitive decline. In the present work, it was therefore hypothesized that the association between age and cognitive performance is mediated by ChP volume, however this i
