Oxygen-induced enzyme release after irreversible myocardial injury. Effects of cyanide in perfused rat hearts.

The effects of 5 mM potassium cyanide (KCN) on creatine phosphokinase (CPK) release and cellular morphology were studied. Rat hearts were perfused with substrate-deficient media gassed with O2 or N2 (O2 medium, N2 medium) at 37 C, and effluent was collected for creatine phosphokinase analysis. Tissue fixation was with glutaraldehyde for light and electron microscopy. Experiments included the following: a) continuous perfusion with O2- or N2-medium in the presence of KCN; b) 45 or 60 minutes of perfusion with N2-medium followed by O2-medium for 15 or 180 minutes, respectively; c) 45 minutes of

Traumatic brain injury in patients with mechanical heart valves on lifelong anticoagulation: incidence, management, and outcomes of intracranial hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with mechanical heart valves require lifelong anticoagulation, exposing them to a substantially elevated risk of hemorrhagic complications following traumatic injury. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in this population represents a particularly challenging clinical dilemma, as the coexistence of intracranial hemorrhage and the obligatory need for anticoagulation places competing physiologic imperatives in direct conflict. Despite the clinical relevance of this scenario, data on the incidence, management, and outcomes of TBI in anticoagulated mechanical valve patients remain sc

Association Between Heart Failure Ejection Fraction Phenotypes and Contrast-Associated Acute Kidney Injury: A Systematic Review.

Contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is more common in patients with heart failure (HF). Stratified by left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), the effect of disease severity is still unknown. There is little and inconsistent data comparing the risk of CA-AKI among the various forms of HF identified by the latest guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science (January 1, 2011 - December 11, 2025) for studies reporting CA-AKI outcomes stratified by LVEF phenotypes (heart failure with reduced eject

Donor heart injury caused by liver needle biopsy during multi-organ procurement surgery: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic organ procurement procedures have been standardized for decades, and serious organ injury during procurement is considered rare. However, when injuries do occur, they may result in irreversible loss of transplantable organs. CASE SUMMARY: We report a rare case of unintentional donor heart injury caused by transdiaphragmatic liver core needle biopsy using a Tru-Cut-type device during multi-organ procurement. Two puncture injuries were identified on the inferior wall of the heart adjacent to the posterior descending coronary artery. Although there was no active bleeding and

From atherosclerosis to reperfusion injury: a comprehensive review of neutrophil extracellular traps across the spectrum of coronary heart disease.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have emerged as critical mediators in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease (CHD), linking innate immunity, thrombosis, and vascular inflammation. This review offers a comprehensive overview of NETs across the spectrum of CHD, ranging from chronic atherosclerotic plaque development to acute coronary syndrome, myocardial infarction, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. We first summarize the molecular mechanisms underlying NET formation, their regulation, and their dual roles in immune defense and vascular damage. Next, we discuss evidence highlighting the

Fibrinogen/Albumin Ratio is Associated with the Occurrence of Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury in Patients with Congestive Heart Failure.

PURPOSE: Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) are associated with an elevated risk of mortality and poor prognosis. Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), a common complication in CHF patients undergoing contrast-enhanced procedures, exacerbates renal dysfunction and contributes to adverse outcomes. However, the relationship between the preoperative fibrinogen/albumin ratio (FAR) and the risk of CI-AKI or all-cause mortality in CHF remains unclear. This study analyzed the correlation of FAR with the risk of CI-AKI and all-cause mortality in patients with CHF. PATIENTS AND METH

Sympathetic overactivation and catecholamine toxicity: mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for neurogenic heart injury following acute ischemic stroke.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) may trigger a spectrum of cardiac complications spanning arrhythmias, troponin elevation, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and myocardial fibrosis and other acute or chronic cardiac lesions. These complications seriously affect the prognosis of patients. Existing studies have shown that the excessive excitation of the sympathetic neural network after cerebral ischemic injury leads to an increase in catecholamine levels, which may be a key factor triggering neurogenic cardiac damage after AIS. Therefore, evaluating the trigger areas of sympathetic nerve excit

When lightning strikes the heart: a rare injury with features of non‑ST elevation myocardial infarction - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Injuries from lightning strikes are infrequent but potentially life-threatening, mainly caused by indirect electrical injuries. Although various organ systems can be involved, the effects of electric current on the cardiovascular system can manifest as electrocardiographic (ECG) changes, elevated cardiac-specific enzymes, and cardiac and respiratory arrest, although rare. This case report aims to describe the ECG changes that occur due to lightning strikes and resemble the features of non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old man with no his

MGST1 overexpression ameliorates mitochondrial dysfunction and ferroptosis during myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury after heart transplantation.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and ferroptosis play crucial roles in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) following heart transplantation. Microsomal glutathione s transferase 1 (MGST1) is widely distributed in mitochondria and has a protective effect against ferroptosis, and its involvement in myocardial I/R injury has not yet been elucidated. In this study, donor hearts from C57BL/6 male mice were subjected to 12 h of ex-vivo cold ischemia treatment and transplanted into the abdomen of recipient mice for 24 h of reperfusion. The results showed that MGST1 was significantly down-regulated in the m

Cationic microbubbles loading shFOXO4/SDF1 rejuvenate the aged heart and alleviate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in the elderly.

Aging is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, with ischemic heart disease (IHD) being the leading cause of cardiovascular-related mortality. Inhibition of FOXO4, which selectively eliminates senescent cells, offers protective effects on the aging myocardium. However, the removal of senescent cells may lead to a reduction in tissue cell density, thereby exacerbating tissue space formation and perivascular fibrosis. Therefore, selectively eliminating senescent cells in the aging heart, while simultaneously replenishing therapeutic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMS

Effect of SGLT-2 inhibitors on acute kidney injury in patients with heart failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are known to reduce hospitalization and cardiovascular mortality in various heart failure (HF) populations, potentially through enhanced excretion of water and sodium. However, there are concerns regarding the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with their use. This meta-analysis aimed to unravel the effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors on risk of AKI in a variety of patients with HF. METHODS: This study conducted a comprehensive literature search using PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and clinicaltrials.gov for studies publishe

Depleting inositol pyrophosphate 5-InsP7 protected the heart against ischaemia-reperfusion injury by elevating plasma adiponectin.

AIMS: Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived circulating protein that exerts cardiovascular and metabolic protection. Due to the futile degradation of endogenous adiponectin and the challenges of exogenous administration, regulatory mechanisms of adiponectin biosynthesis are of significant pharmacological interest. METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, we report that 5-diphosphoinositol 1,2,3,4,6-pentakisphosphate (5-InsP7) generated by inositol hexakisphosphate kinase 1 (IP6K1) governed circulating adiponectin levels via thiol-mediated protein quality control in the secretory pathway. IP6K1 bound to adipo

Two cases report of febuxostat-induced acute liver injury: acute heart failure as a probable risk factor?

Drug induced liver injury, as a sub-type of hepatotoxicity, is rare but practical problem, producing challenges for clinicians. Within the recent two months, two patients with heart failure develop febuxostat-induced acute liver injury during hospital stay. To the best of our knowledge, very few cases of febuxostat-induced hepatotoxicity have been reported up to now. In this paper, two unusual cases of febuxostat-induced acute liver injury are herein described. The medical history, drug treatment, clinical symptoms, liver function tests, diagnosis and prognosis are fully given in this paper. I
