Effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on postoperative respiratory and heart rate in cats subjected to ovariohysterectomy.

Objectives The use of physiological parameters such as respiratory rate and heart rate to assess pain has long been discussed. The aim of the study was to compare postoperative respiratory rate and heart rate in cats subjected to flank ovariohysterectomy treated with a preoperative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) or no NSAID, and determine whether these parameters are suitable for postoperative pain assessment in cats. We hypothesised that cats without an NSAID would experience more postoperative pain, which may increase heart rate and respiratory rate. Methods A total of 168 fema

Heart Rate-Lowering Therapies for Tachycardia in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is defined by a sustained increase in heart rate of ≥30 beats/min within 10 minutes of standing, accompanied by symptoms of orthostatic intolerance persisting for at least 3 months. Prior research has focused on determinants of tachycardia, raising the question of whether the tachycardia represents a compensatory mechanism or the primary driver of symptoms. In this review, we summarize the available literature on heart rate-lowering interventions in POTS and examine whether reducing heart rate is associated with symptom improvement.

Diagnostic value of blood sampling in fetuses with growth retardation.

BACKGROUND: Fetuses with intrauterine growth retardation are delivered if they have evidence of distress, as manifested by abnormalities in the fetal heart rate and umbilical-artery blood flow. We studied whether umbilical-blood sampling might provide further information useful for management. METHODS: We measured hemoglobin and lactate concentrations, oxygen content, pH, blood gas levels, and base deficit in umbilical-vein blood and correlated these measurements with the heart rate and umbilical-artery wave forms recorded by Doppler velocimetry in 56 fetuses with growth retardation. Twenty-o

Effects of heart rate reduction with ivabradine on vascular stiffness and endothelial function in chronic stable coronary artery disease.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological and clinical studies have shown a relevant association between heart rate and cardiovascular mortality. Experimental studies identified vascular effects of heart rate reduction with the If channel inhibitor ivabradine. Therefore, the effects of heart rate reduction on endothelial function and indices of arterial stiffness were examined in patients with stable coronary artery disease in a prospective, placebo-controlled clinical crossover study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-three patients (18 men and 5 women) with a resting heart rate (HR) of at least 70 beats per

Effects of acetylpromazine on the hemodynamics of the equine metatarsal artery, as determined by two-dimensional real-time and pulsed Doppler ultrasonography.

Heart rate, blood velocity, volumetric blood flow, and arterial diameter for 10 horses given acetylpromazine were determined from measurements of the dorsal metatarsal artery 3 (the great metatarsal artery), using 2-dimensional real-time and gated pulsed Doppler ultrasonography. Acetylpromazine induced significant increases in arterial diameter (P less than 0.01) and volumetric flow rate (P less than 0.05)--all compatible with adrenergic blockade. There was a trend indicating that there was increased blood velocity. Heart rate was unchanged.

Effects of cocaine on baroreflex control of heart rate in conscious rats.

Cocaine administration elicits a pressor response reportedly dependent upon central and peripheral actions. The present study was designed specifically to determine whether cocaine affects baroreflex sensitivity and whether this is mediated by an action in the CNS. Baroreflex control of heart rate was assessed by noting the change in the duration of the arterial pulse pressure or in the heart rate elicited by administration of pressor and depressor agents. The effects of intracerebroventricular and intravenous cocaine administration were compared. Cocaine (0.1-0.15 mg/kg/min, i.v.) produced a

Impact of heart rate on mechanical dyssynchrony and left ventricular contractility in patients with heart failure and normal QRS duration.

AIMS: The quantification of mechanical dyssynchrony has important diagnostic value and may help to determine optimal therapy in heart failure (HF). We hypothesized that mechanical dyssynchrony may be augmented at increased heart rates in patients with HF and normal QRS duration. METHODS AND RESULTS: From online segmental conductance catheter signals, we derived indices to quantify temporal and spatial aspects of mechanical dyssynchrony during systole in 20 control subjects, 20 HF patients with normal QRS duration, and 12 HF patients with complete left bundle branch block (CLBBB). Data were co

A novel 'splice site' HCN4 Gene mutation, c.1737+1 G>T, causes familial bradycardia, reduced heart rate response, impaired chronotropic competence and increased short-term heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: The most important molecular determinant of heart rate regulation in sino-atrial pacemaker cells includes hyperpolarization-activated, cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels, the major isoform of which is encoded by the HCN4 gene. Mutations affecting the HCN4 gene are associated primarily with sick sinus syndrome. METHODS AND RESULTS: A novel c.1737+1 G>T 'splice-site' HCN4 mutation was identified in a large family with familial bradycardia which co-segregated with the disease providing a two-point LOD score of 4.87. Twelve out of the 22 investigated family members [4 males, 8 femal

[Effects of carbamazepine on heart conduction in young patients: a serial study using ambulatory ECG].

BACKGROUND: Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a first-line drug in the treatment of epileptic seizures and neuralgia. CBZ is also a cardioactive drug and sometimes induces sinusal dysfunction or AV conduction defects. METHODS: In order to investigate the effect of CBZ on sinus node function and AV conduction, long-term ECG recording (24 hours) and determination of plasma concentration of CBZ were carried out in 10 epileptic patients without heart disorders (5 males and 5 females, mean age 31 years), in the basal state, during steady-state (7th day) and after 30th day of CBZ treatment. Detecting and Diagnosing Atrial Fibrillation (D2AF): study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is a common cause of stroke and other morbidity. Adequate treatment with anticoagulants reduces the risk of stroke by 60 %. Early detection and treatment of atrial fibrillation could prevent strokes. Atrial fibrillation is often asymptomatic and/or paroxysmal. Case-finding with pulse palpation is an effective screening method, but new methods for detecting atrial fibrillation have been developed. To detect paroxysmal atrial fibrillation ambulatory rhythm recording is needed. This study aims to determine the yield of case-finding for atrial fibrillation in primar

A comparison of some physiological and psychological effects of propranolol and diazepam in normal subjects.

Some central and peripheral effects of orally administered propranolol (60 mg), diazepam (5 mg) and placebo were compared in normal subjects. The central effects measured were changes in magnitude of the contingent negative variation (CNV) and subjective anxiety ratings; the peripheral effects were changes in heart rate, blood pressure, galvanic skin response and hand steadiness. After diazepam there was a decrease in CNV magnitude and in the level of subjective anxiety; there was a slight fall in blood pressure but little change in heart rate. After propranolol, on the other hand, there was n

What role do adrenoreceptor polymorphisms play in modifying cardiovascular responses in obstructive sleep apnoea?

OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea) is a common condition that is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. It is remains unclear what role OSA plays in determining cardiovascular risk. The immediate physiological changes that occur during upper airway obstruction are potential contributors to cardiovascular risk in OSA. These changes include increased sympathetic activity, which is responsive to treatment of OSA with CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). In this issue of Clinical Science, the possible role of a common polymorphism in the beta1-adrenoreceptor [R389G (Arg389Gly)] has be

Heart failure progression due to secondary organ dysfunction in acute heart failure.

Although the pathophysiology of heart failure progression is important to survival it is not fully understood. In 92 patients with acute heart failure due to myocardial infarction or dilated cardiomyopathy, secondary organ dysfunction was evaluated to determine whether this factor contributed to heart failure progression and death. Forty-one patients had renal dysfunction, hepatic disease or loss of consciousness after the onset of the acute heart failure, and 26 of them (63%) died of progressive heart failure during the follow-up period of 20 months on average. The one-year survival rate was

Unrecognized maternal heart rate artefact in cases of perinatal mortality reported to the United States Food and Drug Administration from 2009 to 2019: a critical patient safety issue.

BACKGROUND: Maternal heart rate artefact is a signal processing error whereby the fetal heart rate is masked by the maternal pulse, potentially leading to danger by failure to recognize an abnormal fetal heart rate or a pre-existing fetal death. Maternal heart rate artefact may be exacerbated by autocorrelation algorithms in modern fetal monitors due to smooth transitions between maternal and fetal heart rates rather than breaks in the tracing. In response, manufacturers of cardiotocography monitors recommend verifying fetal life prior to monitoring and have developed safeguards including sign

The Association Between Endurance Training and Heart Rate Variability: The Confounding Role of Heart Rate.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a widely used marker of cardiac autonomic nervous activity (CANA). Changes in HRV with exercise training have often been interpreted as increases in vagal activity. HRV is strongly associated with heart rate, which in turn, is associated with heart size. There is strong evidence from basic studies that lower heart rate in response to exercise training is caused by morphological and electrical remodeling of the heart. In a cross-sectional study in participants of a 10 mile race, we investigated the influence of endurance exercise on HRV parameters independently o

Hemodynamic changes during ventricular pacing in patients with complete heart block and aortic and mitral valvular heart disease.

Increasing the heart rate to near normal in patients with complete heart block (CHB) and slow ventricular rates may lead to greater improvement in ventricular function than when the heart rate is increased from normal to more rapid heart rates. Improvement in ventricular function is usually manifested by a decrease in left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) and volume and by an increase in contractility. In patients with both CHB and valvular heart disease improvement in ventricular function during pacing may be modified by the nature of the valvular disease. Hemodynamic data from six

Consistency and timeliness of intrapartum care interventions as predictors of intrapartum stillbirth in public health facilities of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: approximately one-third of the global stillbirth burden occurs during intrapartum period. Intrapartum stillbirths occurring in the health facilities imply that a foetus was alive on admission to labour and had greater chances of survival with optimum obstetric care. Active monitoring and follow-up by skilled birth attendants becomes critical to determine the progress of labour and to decide any emergency obstetrical care actions. Timely monitoring of labour progress indicators including fetal heart rate (FHR), uterine contraction maternal vital signs, vaginal examination (VE) are
