BACKGROUND: There is interest in the development of GERD after Helicobacter pylori eradication. In contrast, the development of duodenal erosions after therapy has received scant attention. Patients were examined after eradication of H pylori infection to determine the frequency of post-therapy duodenal erosions (primary outcome) and whether there was a relation between development of duodenal and esophageal erosions. Additionally, factors were searched for that would identify patients at increased risk for duodenal erosions.
METHODS: A single-center, endoscopist-blinded, observational study

PURPOSE: The real prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is difficult to determine in the elderly because of the frequency of drug intake (antibiotics or anti-secretory drugs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of five tests in the elderly.
METHODS: The study population consisted of consecutive patients undergoing a routine endoscopy between August 1998 and December 1999. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of four tests in all of the included patients: culture and histology of biopsy specimens, serology (ELISA) and urea breath test (13C-UBT

The prevalence of H. pylori infection in AIDS patients has been controversial. A. controlled prospective and descriptive study was conducted in a group of 64 HIV-infested patients. H. pylori detection was carried out by endoscopic study during which two biopsy samples of gastric antrum and body were taken for the histologic study and other 2 samples of gastric antrum and body for urease testing. H.pylori infection prevalence was 56.3%. The comparison group was composed by 110 serologically HIV-negative patients, with an infection prevalence rate of 77.2%. In the HIV-AIDS group, the frequency o

Histopathologic and clinical data strongly suggest a causal relation between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, or both. However, little has been written about the potential association between H. pylori infection and Brunner's gland adenoma. Therefore, we carried out a prospective study to determine the presence of H. pylori infection among patients with Brunner's gland adenoma. From November 1996 till October 1999, 19100 patients who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at two clinical centers in Zagreb, Croatia, were candidates for participation in

Factors influencing Helicobacter pylori infection recurrence still have not been fully clarified. The aim of this study was to determine whether, after eradication of H. pylori, any clinical or histologic features could yield information on infection relapse. We enrolled in the study 72 patients successfully treated for H. pylori infection by either dual (n = 49) or triple (n = 23) therapy. H. pylori eradication was defined as a negative bacterial finding by rapid urease test and histologic assessment at least 4 weeks after cessation of therapy. Upon eradication, gastritis grading was performe

BACKGROUND: Infection with Helicobacter pylori is believed to be associated with generation of reactive oxygen molecules which leads to oxidative stress in the gastric mucosa; but the relation between oxidative stress and gastrointestinal mucosal damage has not been documented.
AIM: To look for evidence of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the gastric mucosa in H. pylori-associated peptic ulcer.
METHODS: 34 duodenal ulcer (DU) patients with H. pylori infection, 14 DU patients without H. pylori infection and 10 healthy subjects without H. pylori infection were studied. H. pylori infe

Helicobacter pylori causes gastric cancer in human and in experimental animals. The link between gastritis and H. pylori is causal. Differences in the incidence of gastric cancer in populations with similar high prevalence of H. pylori infection can be related to the differences in the age of acquisition of chronic atrophic gastritis, which in turn is related to an interaction between environmental factors, especially diet, and H. pylori infection. The low odds ratios reported in epidemiology studies evaluating the relation between gastric cancer and H. pylori infection reflect the high overal

Worldwide, H. pylori prevalence in children ranges from under 10% to almost 80%. Prevalence is low in developed countries; whereas high prevalence is observed in most developing countries. Documented risk factors for infection include socioeconomic status, household crowding, ethnicity, migration from high prevalence regions, and infection status of family members. H. pylori infection is not associated with specific symptoms in children; although it is consistently associated with antral gastritis, which clinical significance is unclear. H. pylori associated duodenal ulcers are seldom seen in

Lymphoid tissue is normally absent in the gastric mucosa; however, lymphoid follicles are very frequently noted in Helicobacter-associated gastritis. We reviewed 237 cases of chronic gastritis with lymphoid follicles. Out of this 227 cases (95.8%) were found to have H. pylori infection. The significance of this finding and its possible relationship to primary gastric lymphoma are discussed.

To study the effect of Helicobacter Pylori (Hp) on the process of gastric carcinogenesis, 35 cases of chronic gastritis, 20 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were studied by use of transmission electron microscopy, immunohistochemical and molecular biological technique. The results showed that 24 of 35 cases of chronic gastritis were positive for Hp, 11/20 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were Hp positive. PCNA positive cell labeling index (LI) in Hp-associated chronic gastritis (LI = 20.6 +/- 4.7) was higher than that in Hp negative chronic gastritis (LI = 11.3 +/- 5.2) (P < 0.05). HSP70 express

The success of the eradication treatment for Helicobacter pylori in managing ulcer disease has further refined the indications for ulcer surgery. More patients are spared unnecessary surgery and its untoward sequelae. It is intriguing that surgery has been effective, given that Helicobacter pylori infection is the underlying culprit. Recent studies show that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection remains high after a vagotomy but is more markedly reduced following a partial gastrectomy. Such a reduction may be due to the removal of distal stomach, which is the usual site of infection.

In this prospective study 30 patients of reflux esophagitis were studied to detect if there was any association between presence of esophagitis and H. pylori infection. 30 patients of non-ulcer dyspepsia acted as controls. In both the groups esophageal and antral biopsies were studied for the presence of H. pylori infection. None of the esophageal biopsies showed H. pylori infection in either group. H. pylori positivity was similar in the antrum of the patients with esophagitis (20 out of 30) and non ulcer dyspepsia (19 out of 30) (p > 0.05). There was no significant association between presen

Solitary gastric plasmacitomas are infrequent tumors. They account for 5% of the extramedullary plasmacitomas. We report an unusual case in a 14 years old boy. The patient has had gastric symptoms for 2 years prior to an endoscopic examination. A fungating, ulcerated lesion was observed in the antrum. The biopsies showed a monoclonal, Lambda positive, diffuse, plasmocitic proliferation infiltrating the mucosa. Also a moderate number of Helicobacter pylori were identified in the gastric pits and numerous lymphoid follicules were observed in the deep portion of the mucosa. In view of the presenc

OBJECTIVES: Previous work suggests an association between air pollution exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes, even at relatively low concentrations. Our aim was to quantify the effect of air pollution having an adverse effect on preterm birth (PTB) and fetal growth in a large UK cohort using a novel exposure estimation technique [spatio-temporal (S-T) model] alongside a traditional nearest stationary monitor technique (NSTAT).
METHODS: All available postcodes from a Northwest England birth outcome dataset during 2004-2008 were geocoded (N=203 562 deliveries). Pollution estimates were linke

An increased frequency of peptic ulcer disease is noted in patients with cirrhosis, but the role of H. pylori in this disorder remains to be determined. The diagnosis of cirrhosis was confirmed by a combination of clinical, biochemical, radiological, and histological methods. The severity of cirrhosis was assessed by Pugh's modification of Child's criteria. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed consecutively to evaluate the presence of varices and gastroduodenal mucosa. H. pylori status was assessed by histology, urease test, and serology. In all, 130 patients with cirrhosis were recr

BACKGROUND: How Helicobacter pylori infection affects gastric acid secretion is still unclear.
METHODS: Gastric juice pH, ammonia concentration in gastric juice, serum gastrin level, and grade of gastritis in accordance with the Sydney System were determined for patients with gastric ulcer (GU) and duodenal ulcer (DU) before and after treatment with lansoprazole and amoxicillin, and results were compared with those of H. pylori-negative controls.
RESULTS: Scores for H. pylori density, atrophy, metaplasia, and activity of gastritis in the corpus were higher in patients with GU, especially tho
