An 86-year-old woman was hospitalized for breathlessness and a large right-sided pleural effusion. Approximately 1 h after thoracentesis, she developed a hemothorax resulting in hypotension and death. Routine postmortem CT scanning showed a large volume right hemothorax and a markedly enlarged liver. In an attempt to determine the origin of bleeding prior to autopsy, a postmortem CT angiogram was performed. Following inadvertent cannulation of the left long saphenous vein and infusion of ∼1,700 mL of a polyethylene glycol 200 and iodine-based radiographic contrast solution into systemic veins …

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic role and therapeutic effectiveness of videothoracoscopy in chest trauma. Between 1st January 1993 and 30th September 2003, 112 traumatized patients underwent a videothoracoscopy. The origin of trauma was different: 60 road accidents, 42 accidental falls, 7 knife wounds and 3 firearm wounds. Seventy-six patients presented hemothorax, 21 hemopneumothorax, 10 suspected diaphragmatic injury and 5 pericardium effusion. All patients were hemodynamically stable and conscious. In suspected diaphragmatic rupture patients, videothoracoscopy confirmed …

PURPOSE: Unlike adults, less is known of the etiology and risk factors for blunt cardiac injury (BCI) in children. Identifying risk factors … . The strongest independent risk factors for BCI were pulmonary contusions (OR 15.4, p < 0.001) and hemothorax (OR 8.9, p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS: Following trauma, the presence of pulmonary contusions or hemothorax should trigger additional screening investigations specific for BCI in pediatric patients.

Primary pleural angiosarcoma (PPA) is an extremely rare malignancy for which there is no consensus on treatment. The clinical course of PPA … survival rate was approximately 4.4%. In univariate analyses, the presence of pleural effusion and hemothorax were significant predictors of decreased survival, with hazard ratios (HRs) of 2.7 (P = .04) and 3.3 (P = .006), respectively. Sixteen patients received no therapy, and their prognosis was worse than patients who did receive therapy (P = .019). Radi …

The association between laterality of rib fracture, hemothorax, subcutaneous emphysema, and BPTx, and the effect of age and gender on these injuries, mortality, and ISS were analyzed.
RESULTS: The patient group included 144 males, and the mean age was 36.07±15.77 years. The primary cause of trauma was a motor …

OBJECTIVE: We describe an infrequent but potentially lethal complication: an iatrogenic injury of the internal mammary artery after central … in, the patient suffered hypotension and cardiac arrest, secondary to an adequately drained massive hemothorax. Restoration of spontaneous circulation was initially achieved, and the patient was transferred to the angiographic suite. Selective angiography during cardiopulmonary resuscitation for a second cardiac arrest revealed a laceration of the internal m …

The authors describe 21 complications which occurred in puncture catheterization of the subclavian vein in 1,276 (1.65%) patients. They varied widely in character--hemothorax, pneumothorax, thrombosis of the subclavian vein, etc. The case record of one patient with traumatic pneumothorax after puncture catheterization of the subclavian vein is discussed in detail.

We report a case of life-threatening hemothorax three months after surgical repair of pectus excavatum. Angiography revealed the hemorrhage to originate from a laceration of the phrenic artery secondary to dislodgment of the metal strut used for the repair. Awareness of this rare complication in patients after repair of pectus excavatum is required.

STUDY AIM: Evaluation of results in blunt injury of the thoracic aorta (BAI) endovascular treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients were treated for BAI. Thirteen patients had associated polytrauma, 4 of these had a serious hypotensive status and 4 had an hemothorax. In the remaining 3, two had a post-traumatic false aneurysm of the isthmus and 1 had a segmental dissection. In those 13 patients a periaortic hematoma was associated to hemothorax in 4. All patients were submitted to an endovascular treatment, in two cases the subclavian artery ostium was intentionally covered.

Complications of subclavian vein catheterization are common and include pneumothorax, hemothorax, and sepsis. Osteomyelitis is a rare complication. The present report describes a patient with osteomyelitis of both clavicles due to subclavian vein venipuncture, in whom fever and chills were absent and the sole clinical finding was local pain and tenderness in the involved area.

UNLABELLED: Glanzmann thrombasthenia is a rare hereditary qualitative platelet disorder characterized by a lifelong bleeding tendency due to quantitative and qualitative abnormalities of the platelet integrin alpha(IIb)beta3. Common clinical manifestations include purpuric type skin bleeding, prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, epistaxis, gingival bleeding and menorrhagia. Less frequently, gastrointestinal system bleeding may occur. Haemarthrosis, haematuria, intracranial and visceral haemorrhage are very rare symptoms. This study reports a 3-y-old girl with Glanzmann thrombasthenia who presen
