Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum of anatomical abnormalities of the hip joint in which the femoral head has an abnormal relationship with the acetabulum. Most studies report an incidence of 1 to 34 cases per 1,000 live births and differences could be due to different diagnostic methods and timing of evaluation. Poroma is a benign adnexal skin tumor seen in middle aged individuals with no sex predilection. The acral sites are the most commonly affected regions. Hip or buttock as a location of origin has rarely been reported. We report two cases of poroma, one located on the hip of a 75-year-old man and the other on the buttock of a 60-year-old man.

The field of hip arthroscopy continues to grow as surgeons become more familiar with disorders of the intra-articular and extra-articular compartments of the hip. Recent studies have described the endoscopic treatment of injuries to the lateral peritrochanteric compartment of the hip, including recalcitrant trochanteric bursitis, external coxa saltans, and tears of the gluteus medius and minimus tendons.

Between 1993-2003 the authors treated 5 girls with idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip joint. Their mean age at first symptoms were 9 years (range 6-11 years). In all initial symptoms were pain and a hip flexion contracture of a mean 33 degrees (range 30-40 degrees). All were treated with multiple stationary rehabilitation including traction, range of motion exercises, analgetic physical therapy and longlasting walking with crutches. The hip region is the seat of a rich and common periarticular pathology, with a variable involvement, depending of the location, and needs better knowledge. Anyway the clinical examination takes the major place in the diagnostic. Trochanteric bursitis and tendinitis are the more common clinical syndrome in that regional pathology. We describe two patients with obturator dislocation of the hip which was irreducible by described techniques of closed reduction. The first required open reduction using the iliofemoral approach with release of rectus femoris. The second was treated on a traction table which allowed disengagement of the head and, when combined with simultaneous lateral traction, adduction and gradual release of the longitudinal traction, facilitated a smooth reduction. Although arthroscopy of the hip is being carried out increasingly, little is known about the rate of associated complications. We describe a prospective study of 640 consecutive procedures in which a consistent technique was used. The overall complication rate was 1.6%. Complications, none of which was major or long-term, included transient palsy of the sciatic and femoral nerves, perineal injury, bleeding from the portal wounds, trochanteric bursitis and intra-articular breakage of the instrument. We believe that it is possible to undertake this operation safely using the technique described.

We have described a case of osteomyelitis of the ischium with extension into the adjacent soft tissues and abscess formation. Diagnosis and treatment were initially delayed due to the assumption that edema in the thigh muscles seen on initial MRI represented polymyositis. The hip joint may be affected in 15% to 28% of all patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
