Host Specialisation, Immune Cross-Reaction and the Composition of Communities of Co-circulating Borrelia Strains.

We use mathematical modelling to examine how microbial strain communities are structured by the host specialisation traits and antigenic rel … ed of two host species, one vector, and multiple co-circulating pathogen strains that vary in their host specificity and their antigenic distances from one another. We explore the conditions required to maintain pathogen diversity. We show that the combination of host specificity and antigenic differentiation creates an intricate niche structure. Unequivocal rules …

Do positions in individual-based ectoparasite-small mammal networks differ between female and male hosts?

We investigated the contributions of female and male hosts to the structure of individual-based host-parasite networks, using 21 species of small mammals from two regions (West Siberia and eastern Slovakia) and two taxa of ectoparasitic arthropods (fleas and gamasid mites). We asked whether (a) the values of individual host position indices (individual strength, nested rank, the degree of individual specialization, and the eigenvector centrality) and individual host roles differed between female and male hosts in each network and (if yes) were associated with differences in the infestation lev

CkP1 bacteriophage, a S16-like myovirus that recognizes Citrobacter koseri lipopolysaccharide through its long tail fibers.

Citrobacter koseri is an emerging Gram-negative bacterial pathogen, which causes urinary tract infections. We isolated and characterized a novel S16-like myovirus CKP1 (vB_CkoM_CkP1), infecting C. koseri. CkP1 has a host range covering the whole C. koseri species, i.e., all strains that were tested, but does not infect other species. Its linear 168,463-bp genome contains 291 coding sequences, sharing sequence similarity with the Salmonella phage S16. Based on surface plasmon resonance and recombinant green florescence protein fusions, the tail fiber (gp267) was shown to decorate C. koseri cell

Polyphagy on unpredictable resources does not exclude host specialization: insects feeding on mushrooms.

The degree of ecological specialization plays a crucial role in shaping the structure and functioning of communities. However, comparing specialization within and among groups of organisms is complicated by both methodological issues and conceptual and terminological inconsistencies. Environmental predictability has been considered a key determinant of specialization though empirical evidence is still limited. Fungi and their insect consumers provide a poorly studied but promising system to measure host specialization and test the predictability hypothesis. In this study, we systematically sam

Newly Discovered Rustrela Virus: Current State of Knowledge About the Etiological Agent of Feline "Staggering Disease".

The rustrela virus (RusV), a recently discovered member of the Matonaviridae family and a close relative of the rubella virus, has emerged as the etiological agent of "staggering disease"-a progressive neurological disorder primarily affecting domestic cats and other mammals. Characterized by nonsuppurative meningoencephalomyelitis, RusV infection manifests with clinical signs such as ataxia, seizures, and behavioral abnormalities. First identified in 2020, RusV has since been detected in various mammalian species across Europe and, more recently, in North America. This review provides a compr

Bacteriophage populations mirror those of bacterial pathogens at sites of infection.

Bacteriophages, viruses that parasitize bacteria, are known to be abundant at sites of bacterial colonization, but the relationship between phages and bacteria at sites of infection is unclear. Bacteriophages are highly specific to their bacterial host species, and so we hypothesize that phage populations would mirror those of bacterial pathogens within infected tissues. To test this, here we study publicly available cell-free DNA (cfDNA) generated using next-generation sequencing of infected bodily fluids, including urine, joint fluid, peritoneal fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, cerebrosp

Emergence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in different animal species.

The emergence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in animals such as horses, pet animals and productive livestock has raised questions of a probable human origin and in more general of host specificity of S. aureus. Particular clonal lineages are obviously specific for humans (e.g. ST15, ST25, ST45) and other for ruminants (e.g. ST151). MRSA associated with veterinary nosocomial infections (e.g. ST8 and ST254 in horses, ST22 in small animals) very likely have their origin in health care facilities. MRSA ST398 which became first known from widespread colonization in industrial…

Are novel and co-xenic associations common in alien fungal and fungus-like plant pathogens?

Impacts of alien fungal and fungus-like plant pathogens depend on host interactions, including novel associations with native plants and co-xenic associations with alien plants that do not share the same area of origin, both largely unquantified globally. Combining global distribution and association data, we characterised associations across pathogens' introduced regions, calculated host species richness (SR) and phylogenetic divergence, and examined predictors of novel/co-xenic associations. Novel/co-xenic alien pathogen-plant association records were common (53%) and dominated by widespread

The parasitic dinoflagellate Hematodinium infects multiple crustaceans in the polyculture systems of Shandong Province, China.

The parasitic dinoflagellates of the Hematodinium genus have impacted wild and cultured stocks of commercial crustaceans worldwide. In the past decade, outbreaks of Hematodinium epizootics resulted in substantial mortalities in cultured Chinese swimming crabs Portunus trituberculatus in the polyculture ponds located in Shandong Peninsula, whereas the source and transmission of the parasite in the polyculture pond system remains to be determined. During April to December of 2018, 2034 crabs and 108 shrimps were collected from the polyculture pond systems in the highly endemic area of Hematodini

Landscapes within landscapes: A parasite utilizes different ecological niches on the host landscapes of two host species.

Parasites are distributed across populations of hosts, but also across microhabitats on or inside hosts: together the host population distribution and "host landscape" distribution comprise a part of the ecological niche of a parasite. In this paper we examine how a generalist parasite, the tick Ixodes holocyclus, is distributed at both the host population and host landscape scales in two species of host (Perameles nasuta and Rattus rattus) that co-occur. We anaesthetized wildlife to locate ticks from five generalized host body regions; we then analysed the distribution of ticks among the popu

Competition promotes the evolution of host generalists in obligate parasites.

Ecological theory traditionally predicts that interspecific competition selects for an increase in ecological specialization. Specialization, in turn, is often thought to be an evolutionary 'dead end,' with specialist lineages unlikely to evolve into generalist lineages. In host-parasite systems, this specialization can take the form of host specificity, with more specialized parasites using fewer hosts. We tested the hypothesis that specialists are evolutionarily more derived, and whether competition favours specialization, using the ectoparasitic feather lice of doves. Phylogenetic analyses …

New experimental insights into the biology of avian malaria parasites.

BACKGROUND: Despite much research on avian malaria, the details of development of Plasmodium species in birds remain insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to gain new experimental information on avian malaria parasites regarding their host specificity, molecular characterization, persistence, and association with Matryoshka RNA viruses (MaRNAV), which are linked to haemosporidian infections. METHODS: Three species of widespread avian Plasmodium-P. circumflexum pTURDUS1, P. vaughani pSYAT05, and P. relictum pCOLL7-were found in naturally infected wild birds of the Muscicapidae, Turdida…

Syringophilid mites parasitising the crows and the competitive exclusion principle.

Quill mites of the family Syringophilidae (Acariformes: Prostigmata) are one of the most species-rich groups of mite ectoparasites permanently associated with birds, characterised by high host specificity and strict microhabitat preferences. In this study, we examined 179 individuals representing 19 species of the genus Corvus (Passeriformes: Corvidae) to investigate the prevalence and host associations of syringophilid mites. Quill mites were detected in 31 hosts from 11 host species, with infestations restricted exclusively to the wing coverts and involving two species: Syringophiloidus glan…

Evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in utilizing host transmembrane serine proteases.

SARS-CoV-2 entry into host cells depends on proteolytic activation of the spike protein by host proteases, a process shaped by spike mutations that influence viral specificity and infectivity. Using human airway epithelial models, this study investigated how different SARS-CoV-2 variants interact with host serine proteases. The Delta variant exhibited enhanced and stable binding to Hepsin through stronger ionic and hydrophobic interactions, promoting efficient spike activation and cell entry. In contrast, Omicron BA.1 showed weaker Hepsin binding and relied more on TMPRSS2 or cathepsins, depen

Current status of the genetics and molecular taxonomy of Echinococcus species.

The taxonomy of Echinococcus has long been controversial. Based mainly on differences in morphology and host-parasite specificity characteristics, 16 species and 13 subspecies were originally described. Subsequently, most of these taxa were regarded as synonyms for Echinococcus granulosus and only 4 valid species were recognised: E. granulosus; E. multilocularis; E. oligarthrus and E. vogeli. But, over the past 50 years, laboratory and field observations have revealed considerable phenotypic variability between isolates of Echinococcus, particularly those of E. granulosus, which include differ

Description of Uncinaria lyonsi n. sp. (Nematoda: Ancylostomatidae) from the California sea lion Zalophus californianus Lesson (Carnivora: Otariidae).

A new species of hookworm, Uncinaria lyonsi n. sp., is described based on morphological studies of the nematodes collected by Dr. E. T. Lyons from the California sea lion Zalophus californianus (Lesson) on San Miguel Island, California, USA. The new species is morphologically similar to three other species of the genus Uncinaria Frölich, 1789 parasitising pinnipeds, U. lucasi Stiles, 1901, U. hamiltoni Baylis, 1933 and U. sanguinis Marcus, Higgins, Šlapeta & Gray, 2014, in the body dimensions, the structure of the buccal capsule, the shape and structure of the male caudal bursa and female geni

Accuracy and clinical utility of near-point-of-care blood tests for predicting incident tuberculosis in exposed contacts in high burden settings: a multi-country observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The scale-up of tuberculosis preventative treatment is a global health priority yet constrained by our inability to identify which exposed contacts should be prioritised. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of new and established tests, including the first deployable host mRNA assay, done near point-of-care to diagnose incident tuberculosis in contacts in Mozambique, South Africa, and Uganda. METHODS: Contacts microbiologically-negative for tuberculosis or without symptoms were followed for 12 months. Xpert MTB-Host Response (Xpert MTB-HR), haemoglobin, and C

Brugia malayi miRNAs and potential targets within the feline host (Felis catus).

Host specificity is a critical feature of the survival and proliferation of parasites. In the context of interactions with the host, numerous mechanisms have been identified, particularly in parasitic helminths, that enable manipulation of the host immune system to enhance their own survival. The evolutionary history of these interactions often results in hosts becoming disease-tolerant or asymptomatic, even when burdened with a high number of worms, until a disruption in the host's immune system can trigger a disease state. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying host specificity and the…
