Developmental Asset Profiles as Moderators of the Association Between Intersectional Discrimination and Mental Health Among Black Sexual Minority Men.

This cross-sectional study examined whether developmental assets moderate the relationship between intersectional discrimination and mental … ross all profiles, with the strongest effect observed in the moderate assets group. Younger age and housing instability were consistently linked to poorer mental health outcomes. These findings suggest that developmental assets can buffer some-but not all-of the mental health impacts of discrimination, suggesting that uneven asset patterns may heighten risk.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Identifying Social Determinants of Health in Low-Income Populations Within United States Health Systems: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Low-income populations in the United States experience disproportionate exposure to adverse social conditions. This scoping review examined artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches used in United States health systems to identify financial hardship, housing instability, food insecurity, neighborhood deprivation, and other social determinants of health (SDOH), and characterized interventions implemented in response. METHODS: Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidance, MEDLINE, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, PsycINFO, and Acade…

Cannabis use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and suicidal ideation within a social determinants of mental health framework: Insights from a network analysis.

They frequently co-occur and … ation) showed more direct connections to mental health outcomes, whereas social determinants (e.g., housing instability, employment) occupied more distal positions. Cannabis use disorder and psychological distress emerged as key bridging nodes linking sociodemographic and structural domains to broader mental health outcomes, including suicidal ideation and alcohol us …

Feasibility of Using Wearables to Monitor Physical Activity and Sleep During Substance Use Disorder Treatment: Insights From a Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Wearable technologies enable objective measurement of physical activity (PA) and sleep in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment research, yet the feasibility of deploying wearables in real-world SUD service settings is poorly understood. Given high rates of treatment discontinuation (30%-50%), housing instability, and transience among individuals with SUDs, wearable loss may be substantially higher than in other populations. METHODS: We prospectively tracked SENS Motion wearables deployed to 63 participants across 8 SUD treatment and recovery service sites in Western Australia, s…

Insurance status and psychological distress during the 2007 to 2009 U.S. recession: A novel integrative data analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: The 2007 to 2009 U.S. economic recession was associated with widespread job loss, housing instability, and rising mental health challenges. While previous studies have linked economic downturns to psychological distress, limited research has examined how health insurance status modifies this relationship during and after a recession. AIMS: This study investigated changes in psychological distress (PD) among U.S. adults before, during, and after the 2007 to 2009 recession and examined whether insurance status mediated the relationship between economic hardship and PD. METHODS: Usi…

Elastic net (EN) logistic regression and random forest (RF) models were trained separately within cannabis and stimulant cohorts. Exploring the relationship between school-supervised asthma therapy and social determinants of health in pediatric asthma care.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH), including access to care, economic stability, neighborhood factors, and social context, strongly influence pediatric asthma outcomes. School-supervised asthma therapy (SST) is an evidence-based strategy that improves asthma outcomes, particularly for historically marginalized children, by providing support for daily medication adherence in school. However, little is known about the relationship between these programs and the adverse SDoH commonly affecting underrepresented minority and marginalized children with asthma. METHODS: We examined qu

The insidious return of cholera in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Lebanon and Syria: a worrying signal! Past, present, and future forthcoming.

INTRODUCTION: War, hunger, and disease continue to decimate the populations of many countries in the world. Owing to conflicts, environmental instability and natural disasters, many people, especially the poorest, fall victim to epidemic diseases. One such disease, cholera, began to spread again in 2022, striking Lebanon and Syria, countries that have experienced serious social troubles for years. The return of cholera immediately alarmed the scientific community, which is now making every effort, most notably by implementing a major vaccination campaign, to prevent this disease from becoming
